27 inch iMac may support dual drives if the motherboard has a slot for PCiE SSD but with an adapter, u can use any regular PC NVME SSD. The default is a 2.5 inch HDD or SSD.

However, u will need a special tool to cut open the LCD adhesive to gain access to the logic board first. Once done, u will need to dismantle the HDD, PSU, all the cables and eventually the logic board.

If u don't want to mess with the logic board, just remove the HDD and replace with a SATA SSD. Plenty around and dirt cheap.

Hey Sifu,

You go too fast, I am newbie on this

"27 inch iMac may support dual drives if the motherboard has a slot for PCiE SSD but with an adapter, u can use any regular PC NVME SSD. The default is a 2.5 inch HDD or SSD. "

Meaning I can go ahead buy any 2.5inch SSD, right?

first you need to identify if the imac have slot that you can use, vacant, hope the storage chip isn't soldered on the board.

second, for internal storage, there's no such thing as HDD/SSD for Mac. All hard disk are the same, because you going to erase the files system from the factory for the OS installation.

third, if are looking to extend Mac storage by intent to keep the original disk and add extra, not sure if this is possible, you need to open the Mac first, then you will know.

U need to buy the screen removal kit first.
https://my.shp.ee/v59PMXH

After that, any 2.5 inch SATA SSD will do. Opt for at least 500GB or 1TB if planning for a single drive set-up.

At the same time, u may want to upgrade the RAM too. Any DDR4 2400T SODIMM will do. Since the 27 inch model has 4 slots, bump to 32GB. Standard spec is 8GB (4GB X 2) or 16GB (8GB X 2).

Before I forget, the model can upgrade the CPU too.

Watch this video.

Hi all sifus, all done, install success

1. I purchased the imac screen removal tools from Lazada, cost me around rm20

2. I purchased the 480gb Kingston ssd from Lazada (come with 3.5inch bracket)

3. I open the screen using the tiny black wheels in the screen removal tool set, all 6 wheels fully used up, which means it can't be used again next time.

4. I removed the old sata hdd using my toolset purchased from mr. Diy

5. Remove all the gums that sticks on the edge of the screen, using small knife

6. I install the new Kingston 480gb SSD together with the bracket, but the bracket size is not big enough, so I ended up fixing it using my electric glue gun, without screws, which I believe is good enough

7. I did not glue the screen yet, just put it back carefully, and switch on the button, it works
