bagus la... Johor will grow and be prosperous soon

KULAI: Johor’s Kulai district, some 70 kilometres north of Singapore, is known for its rubber plantations and oil palm estates. These days, however, you’ll also find hundreds of acres of construction sites with cranes and work crewWithin three years, the sites will become industrial parks hosting multiple data centres – buildings that house large groups of high-speed computers, servers and routers that store, process as well as distribute vast amounts of data.

The world’s growing reliance on cloud-based technology has fuelled the growth of data centres, and Johor has become one of the hotspots in Malaysia. In particular, southern Johor, with its proximity to the Singapore's financial hub and comparative advantages like abundant land and cheaper power, could be well-positioned to be a key regional player, experts say.Major data centre players like Nvidia, AirTrunk, GDS International, YTL Power as well as Princeton Digital Group have set up operations there, and tech giant Microsoft has reportedly purchased land in Kulai to open a data centre.

According to resource site Baxtel, Johor has 13 data centre facilities across more than 1.65 million square feet of land mass. The state is also ranked as the largest data centre market in Malaysia and ninth-largest in Asia Pacific. Baxtel added that four other data centres are being constructed in Johor. Johor is expected to pull RM17 billion (US$3.6 billion) in new data centre investments this year, building on RM51.1 billion in investments in 2022, according to Malaysian property agency Zerin Properties.

The Malaysia government has also supported Johor’s data centre ecosystem by building industrial parks with suitable infrastructure. Two of the biggest are the 745-acre Sedenak Tech Park (STeP) and 509-acre Nusajaya Tech Park.

If all run according to plan, Johor would be the next growth engine for MY economy. Hope SFZ, SEZ with the help of SG would come to fruition.

Both can grow together but in diff area. But Sarawak is lacking in human resources. Whereas JB&SG have already attracted people from all over the country including S&S cos no restriction in movement within Peninsula.

I watched a talk by Nvidia's Jensen Huang and he mentioned their "huge chip" costing USD250K that could replace a data center. Wonder if it'll be used in local data centers here.

The most famous alternative name of Hokkien is Min Nan Hua, which means Chinese dialect in southern Fujian Province. Another alternative name is He Luo Hua, because the ancestors of native-speakers of Hokkien have ever lived in the basins of Huang He, namely Yellow River, and Luoshui River. From Jin to Song Dynasty, some locals in these basins settle in southern Fujian. Therefore it is believed that Hokkien has been keeping some characters of ancient Chinese language. Now Hokkien in southern Fujian is still thought to be the most representative. Similar with the situation among native-speakers of Cantonese and Hakka, having achieved a new domicile, some native-speakers of Hokkien continue to immigrate to other places. As a result, Hokkien is used in different countries now.

Cannot la. Data center might host gambling data, porn or other stuff and also Israel data

Must boycott

Also later some issue along rnr raised by some idiot and they will throw bombs at the data center.
So risky. Best invest the billions in other countries.

I hope that Malaysia will be the main capital for datacentres for South East Asia. This will no doubt improve and increase our network connectivity to the rest of the world.

Among the targets in Najib Razak's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) was for Malaysia to become a global data center hub, and this target is increasingly being achieved.

Among the two targets in the ETP that began implementation in 2010 (14 years ago) were:
1. Making Malaysia a global data center hub
2. Malaysia transitioning to renewable energy

At that time, Najib understood that the country had many advantages to achieve these goals:
1. Sufficient land area
2. Excess electricity supply, especially renewable energy
3. Human resources with local technical expertise
4. A country free from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes
5. Malaysia has silica sand, strong sunlight, and a sustainable electronic and hi-tech industry

Therefore, it's clearly stated among the 131 Entry Point Projects (EPP) in the 2010 ETP book:

EPP 21: Positioning Malaysia as a world-class data center hub
EPP 47: Solar:
• Increasing the number of silicon producers
• Growing wafer and cell producers
• Increasing module producers
EPP 76: Building up solar power capacity
EPP 83: Tapping Malaysia’s hydroelectricity potential

Among the government's initiatives during Najib's time included:
- Commencing the collection of funds through the "Renewable Energy Fund" tax in 2011 for the development goal of national Renewable Energy (hence, the 1.6% KWTBB tax in your electricity bill).
- Introducing the Renewable Energy Act in 2011.
- Establishment of the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) in 2012
- Introducing the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) policy in 2012 to encourage ordinary citizens and companies to invest in solar panels or any renewable energy generation and sell excess electricity to TNB daily.
- Introducing the National Renewable Energy Policy in 2013 aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2020 by generating 4,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030.
- Launching the Iskandar Sedenak Data Hub technology park in Johor with an area of over 700 acres in 2015 and various other data hubs in Cyberjaya, Klang Valley, and Sarawak.
- The first large-scale open tender for dozens of solar generation plants in 2016.
- Accelerating green industry development through the Green Technology Master Plan Malaysia (2017-2030)

Malaysia also benefited because data centers require a large amount of electricity.

For several years now, almost all Data Center companies, especially from Western countries, have been mandated and required to use only green energy.

Among the earliest successes was Microsoft starting to build their first RM6 billion data center in Sedenak, Johor, since 2014, and it has been operational for a long time.

Since then, many global data center giants such as Amazon, Google, and Bridge Data have announced numerous investments worth tens of billions of Ringgit.

Due to Najib's detailed ETP transformation plan, precise vision, and solid implementation during Najib's tenure, Malaysia's achievements since Najib became PM are:

1. Malaysia becoming the third-largest producer of solar cells and modules globally from nearly zero
2. Malaysia becoming one of the largest producers of green energy in ASEAN from nearly zero
3. Malaysia increasingly becoming a global data center hub. In fact, Johor has become the 9th largest data center hub in the Asia Pacific region in 2023.

The first MS data center already in operations since few years ago.

This is year 2020 news:

"Years In The Making: Microsoft Data Centre In Johor Is Now 40 Percent Complete"

Menteri Besar of Johor, Hasni Mohammad has revealed that Microsoft is currently building a data centre in Kulai district, according to a report by Bernama. The construction of the centre seems to be progressing quite well at the moment since the minister also stated that 40% of the project has been completed so far.

A lot of details regarding the project were not discussed by the report through but our quick search showed the project has actually been in progress for the past few years. In fact, the chatters regarding it have started from as early as 2014.

Back then, it was reported that Microsoft would invest up to RM 6 billion to establish its data centre in Kulai. However, it seemed that the company took quite some time to greenlit the project since the submission of its building plan for the data centre was only reported in 2018.
