Johor with the leadership of the new Agung will be the next big thing in malaysia imo, close proximity with Singapore and access to go infra will help increase business activity in the area.

I hope that Malaysia will be the main capital for datacentres for South East Asia. This will no doubt improve and increase our network connectivity to the rest of the world.

yup and if all those semicon investment ramp up for the next few years, good future for malaysia at least on those front/industry. If tie with human resource/skill development, cita-cita boleh jadi backup for taiwan semicon industry

This is year 2015:

"....the official announcement of Sedenak Iskandar Data Hub (SIDH), a new, 700-acre data centre hub in Sedenak, in the Iskandar Region in the state of Johor. The hub is equipped with robust, state-of-the-art infrastructure and supported by high capacity power and reliable connectivity.

Among the targets in Najib Razak's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) was for Malaysia to become a global data center hub, and this target is increasingly being achieved.

Among the two targets in the ETP that began implementation in 2010 (14 years ago) were:
1. Making Malaysia a global data center hub
2. Malaysia transitioning to renewable energy

At that time, Najib understood that the country had many advantages to achieve these goals:
1. Sufficient land area
2. Excess electricity supply, especially renewable energy
3. Human resources with local technical expertise
4. A country free from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes
5. Malaysia has silica sand, strong sunlight, and a sustainable electronic and hi-tech industry

Therefore, it's clearly stated among the 131 Entry Point Projects (EPP) in the 2010 ETP book:

EPP 21: Positioning Malaysia as a world-class data center hub
EPP 47: Solar:
• Increasing the number of silicon producers
• Growing wafer and cell producers
• Increasing module producers
EPP 76: Building up solar power capacity
EPP 83: Tapping Malaysia’s hydroelectricity potential

Among the government's initiatives during Najib's time included:
- Commencing the collection of funds through the "Renewable Energy Fund" tax in 2011 for the development goal of national Renewable Energy (hence, the 1.6% KWTBB tax in your electricity bill).
- Introducing the Renewable Energy Act in 2011.
- Establishment of the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) in 2012
- Introducing the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) policy in 2012 to encourage ordinary citizens and companies to invest in solar panels or any renewable energy generation and sell excess electricity to TNB daily.
- Introducing the National Renewable Energy Policy in 2013 aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2020 by generating 4,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030.
- Launching the Iskandar Sedenak Data Hub technology park in Johor with an area of over 700 acres in 2015 and various other data hubs in Cyberjaya, Klang Valley, and Sarawak.
- The first large-scale open tender for dozens of solar generation plants in 2016.
- Accelerating green industry development through the Green Technology Master Plan Malaysia (2017-2030)

Malaysia also benefited because data centers require a large amount of electricity.

For several years now, almost all Data Center companies, especially from Western countries, have been mandated and required to use only green energy.

Among the earliest successes was Microsoft starting to build their first RM6 billion data center in Sedenak, Johor, since 2014, and it has been operational for a long time.

Since then, many global data center giants such as Amazon, Google, and Bridge Data have announced numerous investments worth tens of billions of Ringgit.

Due to Najib's detailed ETP transformation plan, precise vision, and solid implementation during Najib's tenure, Malaysia's achievements since Najib became PM are:

1. Malaysia becoming the third-largest producer of solar cells and modules globally from nearly zero
2. Malaysia becoming one of the largest producers of green energy in ASEAN from nearly zero
3. Malaysia increasingly becoming a global data center hub. In fact, Johor has become the 9th largest data center hub in the Asia Pacific region in 2023.

The first MS data center already in operations since few years ago.

This is year 2020 news:

"Years In The Making: Microsoft Data Centre In Johor Is Now 40 Percent Complete"

Menteri Besar of Johor, Hasni Mohammad has revealed that Microsoft is currently building a data centre in Kulai district, according to a report by Bernama. The construction of the centre seems to be progressing quite well at the moment since the minister also stated that 40% of the project has been completed so far.

A lot of details regarding the project were not discussed by the report through but our quick search showed the project has actually been in progress for the past few years. In fact, the chatters regarding it have started from as early as 2014.

Back then, it was reported that Microsoft would invest up to RM 6 billion to establish its data centre in Kulai. However, it seemed that the company took quite some time to greenlit the project since the submission of its building plan for the data centre was only reported in 2018.
