QUOTE One of the interesting features of the test platforms that are used, is the possibility to slow down the chip clock. The operator of the machine can choose to go from billions of ticks per second to a single tick, allowing human eyes to follow what is going on. With the same ease the clock can be stopped altogether. If needed, that gives the engineers the luxury to be able to stare for two hours at a situation that would normally be over in a fraction of a nanosecond. http://tweakers.net/reviews/740/1/chip-mag...m-pagina-1.html

Never heard of the first machine but the 2nd one sounds like a FIB (focus ion beam) machine.

Incredible technology. What I like most is the pure diamond heatsink!

QUOTE(kmarc @ Oct 31 2007, 02:49 AM) Incredible technology. What I like most is the pure diamond heatsink! If you think that's incredible, i will tell you that article is barely scratching the surface of incredible. Failure analysis is insane. And more impressive than the tools that find the failures are the geniuses who actually study and characterize the failures. Their work will never be in any textbook or published literature, because companies want to keep these things a secret.

Definitely. The tech behind all these would be just mind-boggling for lay people like me. Can't even hope to begin to understand them. That's why I say it is incredible as the only thing I can relate with (that is somewhat remotely similar to our consumer rig) is the heatsink.....

I started learning a little about what goes on in failure analysis, it is mind boggling even for the so-called technically inclined (even for circuit design people). It becomes a problem these days because most of the circuit design guys have no idea how things happen in actual silicon, and newer process technologies are more iffy, so design impacts manufacturing more and more. Apparently the failure analysis gurus are never fired and everyone is nice to them because they are way too valuable
