Trying my luck here - does anyone know if this is a common issue with paint being peeled off by the adhered part of the silicone to the wall? So context is that before even a year of completion, my awning started leaking rainwater at the base where the awning connects with the wall. The contractor came to check, and from the video, they're saying that the paint job on the wall was bad, which caused it to flake off when held with silicone. According to him, the silicone is there to fill and prevent water from seeping through gaps between the wall and the awning. I'm not too convinced, since there is not other part of the building where the paint flakes like this. It seems as though there was a constant load on the awning which caused the silicone to be pulled and therefore pull of the paint. Because it's not just the paint which was pulled off, some parts of the cement flaked off as well which is worrying

That looks like gap sealing caulk not silicone sealant.

I think its the silicone problem... lol. A lot of awning contractors dont care much actually, they just install your awning, slap silicone on it, some is interior silicone and then they call it done. Once it starts leaking 6 months later they will come and check and they charge you to repair it. lol. Usually if with awning I will install a zinc flashing behind or at the sides, whichever way the awning is facing. If you want to DIY can buy Sika brand i think its Sika-flex awning caulk. You need to buy the gun and also the silicone itself. But if youre not sure how to walk on your awning you better becareful or consult the same contractor. Edit: seems like youre using solid polycarbonate? This post has been edited by bobowyc: Apr 24 2024, 08:55 PM

I will try to get the answer from contractor then. Concern is that it's peeling off wall paint and then subsequently water is able to leak through it. This awning was installed less than a year ago.

Edit: seems like youre using solid polycarbonate? Yea, this z flashing seems to be the common solution to this problem, lesson learned then.I got the same response as others i'd asked. The sealant was never supposed to be the sole agent preventing from water seeping through, or exposing it to direct sunlight.
