Yeah... embarrassing that it's only my first Kurosawa!
Anyway tonight if I'm free I will watch Jackie Brown, the only QT film I've not seen. I love all his other movies except for Deathproof.

Requiem For A Dream
Requiem For A Dream offers no forgiveness, no hope, no happy ending - only pain, suffering and a sledgehammber blow. This Darren Aronofsky's stylish and avant-garde film is not for the faint hearted and certainly not for those who can't take a smack of reality in the face. The scoop revolves around 4 parallel lives, whose dreams and ambitions were shattered as a result of drug addiction. Aronofsky paints realism aplenty with his trademark "body camera" and the split screen techniques. Combining it with the brilliantly written screenplay and the haunting music, you get a depressing and tragic film that is sure to be a painful experience. There is just ain't enough movies like this. There is much to learn through this movie, but I wonder how many actually take heed Added on June 30, 2009, 6:48 pm QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jun 30 2009, 06:40 PM) Yeah... embarrassing that it's only my first Kurosawa! Planet Terror was pretty awesome fun.
Deathproof had terrible dialogue (especially coming from Tarantino), very unlikeable characters (I was rooting for Kurt Russell all along), and a plot that simply resets itself to zero halfway through. Both halves end with great sequences though - that car crash and that car chase. I saw the longer cut around 2 years ago and disliked it, but I saw the shorter theatrical cut a few weeks back and it was much better. Probably because some flabby dialgue has been cut. And that awful lap dance is out the window too. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jul 1 2009, 07:18 AM) Planet Terror was pretty awesome fun. Well, I was lucky enough to be in Singapore when they had the special double screening of Death Proof and Planet TerrorDeathproof had terrible dialogue (especially coming from Tarantino), very unlikeable characters (I was rooting for Kurt Russell all along), and a plot that simply resets itself to zero halfway through. I have to say that I like BOTH of the movie (Planet Terror slightly more then Death Proof) I think the whole concept was VERY sound, but the mass market wasn't ready for it!! (Yes, but the same market can watch all 6 episodes of Star Wars and/or Extended Version of all three Lord of the Rings movies, in ONE seating!!? I think what impress me about Death Proof is the stunts. Most of it was practical. Very , VERY little CGI!! When the Stunt Women/Actress was on the hood of the car, SHE WAS ON THE HOOD OF THE CAR. NO Harness!! Who would have thunk that Kurt Russell would be such an S.O.B!!!! And true by the end of the movie, who do somewaht sympathise with him, BUT he was SUCH an S.O.B (poor Rosie McGowan)!!!!! This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Jul 1 2009, 01:04 PM |

Jackie Brown. By far Tarantino's most restrained effort, but its great. Although I think the climax didnt quite come together, or maybe I just didnt understand it completely.
SPOILERS Jackie double-crosses Ordell and steals his $500,000 while telling the ATF agent that she only brought in 50,000 so that she can get away with the other load. And then she sets up a trap so that Ordell would come to her and the police will shoot him down. Maybe I'm missing something but since the police assume Ordell has gotten all his money, why would they think he would come back for Jackie? They should have suspected something, that Jackie had stolen the money. And Ray isnt the kind of agent who would let someone get away the $500,000 evidence. Plus I dont think they had enough evidence on him to spring a trap to arrest/shoot him. This post has been edited by QuickFire: Jul 1 2009, 11:19 PM |

Persepolis.
This is my 2nd time watching it and it gets better. The life of Marjane was brilliantly told, uniquely and smoothly. It feels as though I knew her and i think the movie did a great job by allowing us (or just me) to emphatize with her. The film brings us through a series of unfortunate events occuring in Marjane's life, we see her idolizing her activist relatives, going through puberty, her love life, and all surrounded with the premise of the Iranian war era. The way the her story was told is also unique. I love the humour and the wit sandwiched in between the gloomy theme of the film. The "eye of the tiger" scene takes the cake. 4/5. |

The Fall.
Quite an extraordinary experience. I've honestly have not seen a movie like this before. It's highly imaginative and unperturbed by the pressure of Hollywood. Great cinematography and topped up with an ace visionary direction of Tarsem Singh. 4/5. |

Waltz with Bashir.
A truly gripping documentary about genocide campaign.Excellent narrative sequence with a very creative animation style ala A scanner darkly. The ending is truly heartbreaking and makes you ponder the shitty world we are in. The Brothers Bloom. A movie in line of Wes Anderson and Spike Jonze.A truly unconventional movie altogether. At first thought it's gonna be like Ocean Eleven kinda movie but suprised of the more quirky and refreshing take to it.Totally mesmerized with Rachel Weiz and Mark Ruffalo performance here. The storyline set-up and how the con being played out is excellent but near the 3rd act it loses focus and a shift to more gritty tone does not gel well with the earlier more playful set-up.Not by any mean a masterpiece but a potential competent film director in the making.Rian Johnson. Star Wars (1-3)
I think it's widely agreed that Revenge Of The Sith is the best among all. I think it's mainly because there was a real story to tell - the transformation of Anakin to the dark side. We already knew the ending but Lucas really brought up his game after the first two prequels, which were going around and around without a solid story to tell. The acting and focus in The Phantom Menace was a menace but was slowly redeemed in Attack Of The Clones. I still find the romance between Padme and Anakin a tad annoying, it just wasn't convincing enough for such a significant event. Nonetheless, the action scenes were better, well Star Wars isn't about the action scenes but I had to look at them to compensate the lack of story. Neglecting the original trilogy, it was a fair effort by Lucas but we know we can't neglect them, right? |

The last movie I watched on DVD? Predator 2.
Aiyoo. Cannot lar. Learned all the wrong lessons from its predecessor - lots of ultra-violence, but no unique, likable characters. And Danny Glover is a fine character actor, but he total fail at action hero. But it is in this movie that Bill Paxton scored his hat-trick - the only actor to be killed by a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator. |
