Quick question Quickfire, I know you usually don't like animation from other company (eg Dreamworks etc) but what did you think of Kungfu Panda and Happy Feet?

*
I like myself some gore, but the microwave was so obviously tacked on, and its not helped by the rubbish CGI either.

Actually I like some of the Dreamworks stuff like Shrek, Bee Movie, Flushed Away, and Kung Fu Panda. Those are okay. But they are grossly inferior to anything Pixar has put out, yet most people I know say things like "Pixar cartoons ah... okay okay lah... not bad, but Dreamworks much better lah. So much funnier".

...

Never seen Happy Feet.

P/S: Now that you've mentioned Kung Fu Panda, I might rewatch it again sometime this week.

Because that is purely based opinion..so I see nothing wrong if people prefer over x over y and vice versa.  smile.gif

Well... if you can pick Shrek over Toy Story, Finding Nemo over Shark Tale, The Incredibles over Madagascar, Wall-E over Kung Fu Panda, Up over Monsters vs Aliens, then I'm not sure if it's just opinion or suspect taste.

So the music is by John Powell... I like him. Btw you can always use spoiler tags, I dont think I will be able to watch Happy Feet anytime soon. biggrin.gif

Seriously?hmmm..I actually enjoyed Kungfu Panda over Wall-E, Monsters Vs Aliens over Up and Shark tales over Finding Nemo..and Shrek over Toy Story....In fact, I watched DreamWork series more than one time compare to the Pixar series except Wall-E where I actually watched it more than one time.

so according to your post and reaction, then I guess that I am not the human from this world after all..What a shocking discovery..., am I right? ohmy.gif

It is just a matter of opinion..calling it as suspect taste is just somehow..rude? don't you think so? hmm.gif
*
I'm not going to think any less of you as a person in any way in you prefer Dreamworks to Pixar, but it does mean I will approach you for recommendations on movies with extreme trepidation. To me, it's baffling anyone can choose Dreamworks over Pixar... maybe one of two like Kung Fu Panda over the worst of Pixar, but the whole catalogue? Damn! But no, that doesn't make you any less human. lol laugh.gif

Btw I watched a movie yesterday, but I cant seem to remember what movies it was. Oh wait, it was The Boat that Rocked. And it's that forgettable. A fine cast and premise loses absolutely all its steam two-thirds in. I only watched it for Bill Nighy, and he doesnt have much screentime, nor does he sound like he is very interested when he actually appears. The script gets progressively shittier and more contrived by the minute. 3/5, and that's only because of the first hour. Oh I'm positive Emma Thompson is in there as a cameo... though she isnt credited.

Ponyo - First half is incredible. Second half lacks a bit of energy, and the story isnt that well told or realized in the final act. Pity really, as this could have been an Up beater. Still, it is absolutely gobsmackingly amazing to look at. Highly recommended.

P/S: I'm noticing a second-half-isn't-as-good-as-first-half trend in the movies I watch lately. lol

I rewatched Spirted Away. Anime movie. Watched this show about 7years ago? Was still quite young then, didn't understand it.

Got the show, watched it. Was so awesome. Nice storyline. Awesome fantasy. Teehee.

A masterpiece.

Ponyo is also by Miyazaki, for those who didnt know, and I'm still head over heels over it. It's just too damn adorable and cute. The incredible scene where Ponyo runs on waves made from big blue fish makes me so damn happy inside. The drawing, with clear, hard lines and vivid pastel colours... it's just so easy to fall in love with it. I unreservedly recommend it to anyone who isnt put off by animation.

Ponyo was a good movie but I was actually slightly underwhelmed with it, considering it's a Miyazaki movie. It's the same feeling I got with Totoro ( this i can understand, it's an 80s movie if im not wrong). It's simple, straightforward but it just doesn't bring you to the next level the way Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke did. I'd also recommend Porco Rosso and Naussica.
*
I dont find 'simple' a drawback for what is a kids' animation. I've only seen My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo, and all of them except Howl's essentially tell a simple story. The bathhouse in Spirited Away is a complex and marvelous creation though. I really really like Totoro, but I think it's a bit too restrained for its own good, and the ending is abrupt (as is Ponyo). Spirited Away is totally brilliant, first frame to last. Howl's Moving Castle is one big, muddled disappointment. Story isnt compelling, and it just meanders around purposelessly. Some very weak characters too.

Btw I forgot to mention I watched Kung Fu Panda last week too. A lot of fun, but I still maintain it isnt as good as Pixar's worst. To me most of the jokes fell flat. It really excels in the action sequences, and this is the only Dreamworks' effort to look almost as good as Pixar's. The colour palette is beautiful.

Haha

"It's utterly shit, but you cant resist groaning and laughing at the same time" is how I describe Borat to my friends.

So I take it this is way worse than Borat?

EDIT: did you even like borat?

I've watched Borat three or four times. Stinking hilarious! It plunges so deep into the depths of bad taste that it emerges at the top.

QUOTE(maxizanc @ Sep 10 2009, 11:14 PM)
I watched Hulk just now on 1080p. I'd say wow, this time i really enjoyed Hulk so much. And i think i'm gonna embarrassed myself by saying Hulk is better than the Incredible Hulk (i rated the Incredible Hulk higher that Hulk before).

As same as the Dark Knight & Batman Begins this movie gave us a relatively relevant scientific reason about why 'this thing can do this' and 'why and how this thing can do this to him/her'. Just that Hulk is slightly missing about the villain (maybe because it's supposed to be a movie about Bruce Banner before he is a hulk).

Eric Bana as Bruce Banner/Hulk was very effective than Edward Norton. Just one thing is, i don't really like the villain in this movie (which is his father)

It's a wonder how so many people hate Ang Lee's Hulk and like the generic newer offering. However I think Nick Nolte was a fantastic villain.

Antichrist

Jesus christ! This is one extreme movie, attempting to merge art and torture porn into one. I cant say I recommend it, and I cant really appreciate it (at least not fully), but if you want one f***ed up film, this might be worth your time. Just be warned, it is gruesome.

It's about a couple who just lost their infant son. The mother is grief-stricken, blaming it all on herself, becoming depressed and even suicidal. The husband, who is a therapist, decides to take her to a cabin in the woods to begin the recuperation process. But once there they are met with stranger occurrences. After that things start to go real awry. In a very graphic way.

Apart from the baby and a few seconds of faceless (literally) strangers, the features only the two main actors. There is exquisite photography work, and it has a lot of of subliminal psychological subtexts. The whole thing is very uncompromising. It is certainly interesting, but not many people can take this kind of extremity I think. I dont think I want to ever see this again.

Jack Neo's movies have zero subtlety in them. They are crude, unrefined, unprofessional and crap.

The first one is easily the best, but I enjoy all three, and wouldnt mind a fourth. Less of Bloom and Knightley, more of Jack Sparrow and Barbossa please.

I saw Robocop and Total Recall, two excellent Verhoeven movies.

Hulk

Fully-fleshed out characters, a fully-realized script, some kickass action sequences and a unique visual style make this one of the best comic book movies I've seen. It's transcendent the way The Dark Knight is. I still dont understand how the general population can dislike this one so much. The only reason I can think of is they were expecting a cheap and fast Ramly burger and got served class A serious gourmet shit and didnt like it. Definitely in the running for the most underrated gem of all time. This is brilliant.

Yes it's Ang Lee's Hulk from 2003, not Some Mediocre Hollywood Director's The Mediocre Hulk from last year. I've seen it 4 or 5 times now.

I forgot it was Leterrier who directed it. I havent seen anything noteworthy by him. The Incredible Hulk isnt bad, it's just your run-of-the-mill action blockbuster. The only thing I know about Clash of the Titans is that Matt Bellamy from Muse has said he might score parts of the movie. lol

I saw A Few Good Men a month or two back. Pretty good movie, engaging enough, though I though the beginning wasnt very good. The climatic courtroom showdown between the two actors draws majorly from their star powers... and it works damn well.

Demi Moore was terrible. And she wasnt even attractive in this one... shame.
