Wow, and all I watched yesterday was Tekken (2010), and to my Surprise I actually liked it.

All I had to do was switch my brains off!!?!

Guys and Gals with bodies that only "good" genes and/or surgery would produce (Kelly Overton gives new meaning to the word, low cut pants!!).

I'm sure the reviewer for D.O.A on Bluray.com would agree with me!! nod.gif

You are right fragglerock, I do watch alot of JUNK!! And am PROUD of it!! tongue.gif

P.S. I do have Repulsive (for a VERY long time) and have NEVER got around to it!!?! The issue is you have to switch your brains on for movies like this!!!??!! laugh.gif

Little Women (1994) with Winona Ryder

I don't know what it is about the 90s....

Looking back at that decade, there are many books to movie adaption which for me, that works, came out.

Above is one, which I had the chance to re-watch in HD yesterday and others, I waiting with anticipation to review when reissued in HD...

Namely

Emma (1996) with Gwyneth Paltrow
The Secret Garden (1993) with Kate Maberly
A Little Princess (1995) with Liesel Matthews

Dracula (1992) with Winona Ryder, is another which is actually issued in HD by now, and also another 90s book to movie adaption I enjoy.

There are two other production of Little Women namely the 1933 and 1949 with Elizabeth Taylor which I have actually seen, but the 1994 version, I have to say is my favorite.

For the uninitiated, it tells the ups and downs of the March family, during America's civil wars, between the north and the south. The story is told through the perspective of Jo (played by Winona Ryder) a free spirit woman in society where a woman had to rely on their father and husband for simple "being".

What shines for me is the scene with Beth (played by Claire Danes) spoke to Jo about feeling left behind.. Of gosh, if anyone who had seen that scene, still doesn't think that Ms Danes can act....

Also a kick to see Christian Bale pre Batman Begin... It is hard to imagine that he has been in the industry since 1987 (at the ripe old age of 13)

In this lost decade of our, there are some "books to movie adaptation" namely, Dorian Gray (2009) with Ben Barnes and
Becoming Jane (2007) with Anne Hathaway and have to add, none of these are as good as the one from the 90s...

If you enjoy drama I strongly recommend to you The Little Women (1994)

Yes, one of the rare movie in which Keanu Reeve's kayu acting is not overly criticized!! smile.gif

Agreed, it is a beautiful story/movie.

I've just re-watched Alien in HD, the remaster is VERY respectable.

Something I never notice before and is bugging me...

Why the HECK does the Ian Holmes character need to go into stasis with the rest of the crew??

Unless to preserve his "identity"....

Hmmmmmm?????

The Phantom (2009)

Am Original SyFy TV Movie.

Firstly, do not mix this up with the The Phantom (1996) with Billy Zane. That was more faithful to the original comic strips.

Secondly, DO NOT mix this up also with Phantoms (1998) with Ben Affleck, which was based on the Dean Kootz book (one of my favorite books, but horrible movie)

This is a revamped on The Phantom comic strip. making it more hip to modern audience.

Did it succeed?

There are two 120 mins episodes.

For the first 40 minutes of episode one i kept going what does this have to do with, By Jungle Law, The Ghost Who Walks, Summons The Strength of Ten Tiger (Saturday morning Cartoons) and in actual fact, NOTHING. It was all the attempt by the writer to modernise the legend of The Phantom.

Like most movies nowadays, whenever action is used, Parkour (Free Running) is highlighted. Though for the new Phantom, it makes sense.

Then after the first 40 minutes of the movie, I went Awwwwwwww, like that one ah?!! smile.gif

And then the The Phantom, the legend lives, happened.

On some level the modernisation did work.

Most flaws in this movie boils down to the baddies.

I've always been a fan of Isabella Rossellini, but she is BADLY cast in her role here.

The other baddie played by Cas Anvar as the CEO of Singh Brotherhood, hasn't gotten Grand Standing down pat (and never will)

As for the twist at the end, abrupt might be a good way to describe it...

It is obvious that SyFy is hoping to create a TV Series from this, and will they, I suppose the numbers they achieve with this Blu Ray would tell

One last note, the lead Ryan Carnes is good looking enough and seem to be able to handle the "Action" part of stuff, and have to add, he needs to learn how to handle interviews better (part of the Special Feature). He almost put me to slept with his interview.... (I read The Phantom, well materials about The Phantom [hello, it is called a SCRIPT!!!]) tongue.gif

Gosh you are the last person I thought would be defend The Last Airbender!

It wasn't bad, and I think a lot of people went to watch it because of the TV Series, and storyline wise, that runs rings around the movie.

Therefore the hating.

I do hope that Mr M Knight gets to make 2nd and 3rd movie, to redeem himself to the fans of the TV series.

It is ALOT better compared to The Sorcerer's Apprentice!! Really.

So, I felt like it was a paying job to him. Not his usual "i so effin good" work.

Tango & Cash (1989)

There is something "magical" about action/buddy cop movies from the end of 80s and early 90s.

Turner and Hooch, Stop of my Mom will Shoot. Kindergarten Cop etc...

Before the term "bromance" was coined, people like Kurt Russell and Slyvester Stallone made the above movie.

Kurt Russell was offered the job of "Colonel Samuel Trautman" in First Blood, and he turned it down because he and Stallone could not agree on the ending.

After that movie went through the stratosphere, they did agree to work with each other, and this is the movie.

This movie got it all,

Car chase, action, Kurt Russell and Slyvester in the shower.... (I've said too much) and a very VERY young Teri Hatcher!!!

Watched this in HD, it is NOT reference material but it is a lot better then the work Warner Brothers put into Clash of the Titans (1981)

Lots of chemistry between Kurt Russell and Slyvester Stallone.

Full of cliches

I love it. I really REALLY do!!

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

laugh.gif

Michael Bacall (screenplay), Edgar Wright (screenplay) & Bryan Lee O'Malley (Oni Press graphic novels) must have been heart broken/pissed off at the world and O.D. on a steady diet of Nintendo and Hong Kong Kung Fu movie!!!

Again I reiterate, there is not really any original ideas left, only a merging a collection of different themes into one movie!

This is a GREAT example of what I mean!!

The list of cameos who had made an appearance is impressive

Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Thomas Jane!!!?

Been some time since I last saw Jason Schwartzman!!

There are so many Games/Manga/Kung Fu cliches here, they are IMPOSSIBLE to list

And to top it off, this is suppose to be a teenage love story????!

Definitely NOT for everyone (Many references that people will not get) and I have to add, I'm Luving it!! smile.gif

ive similar behaviour.. eg watching tv series. let say the series beginning to spiral at the middle season (eg FlashFoward, Parks and Recreation etc), im content to continue watching it.

other situation. if i miss 1 episode on tv, ill keep on hold and will not watch the next episode. i feel i must watch the missed episode first than continue. even the episode not really related /sequential to each other (eg CSI)

only time and works constraint avoid me to indulge this behaviour..

Vampires Suck (2010)

I do not want to mislead readers of this thread.

This is a VERY LAME movie, on SO MANY levels.

And I have to add, I enjoyed it, because it is taking the mickey out of The Twilight Saga!!!!

I have to be honest, If I had not watched the Eclipse the day before, I would have groaned alot, whilst watching the movie.

What actually happened was I found myself chuckling alot, because I WATCHED ECLIPSE THE DAY BEFORE.

TANGLED: The Story of Rapunzel (2010)

So is this good?

And straight to the point, YES!!

They got the story right, characters right, CGI right, well, everything right.

I heard that this is the last happily every after movie, Disney Animation is going to make (I hope not). If it is, it is going out with a bang (literally and figuratively, watch the movie. You won't be sorry)

I did not see this in 3D (saving up for Tron Legacy)

It was enjoyable in 2D.

A word of CAUTION (for videophiles and/or people in KL)

I watched this at cinema 12, at Pavilion. The first and last 3 minutes of the film is kinda water damage (was raining VERY heavily yesterday). It is NOT severe, but noticeable (watermarks!!!).

Apart from that TOTALLY ENJOYABLE MOVIE.

Hurray for Disney! You've done it again!!

Fantasia (1940)

Fantasia cost USD $2,280,000 (estimated) to make and it made back USD$361,800 (USA) in 1940.

It was a blow to Walt Disney. He had high hopes for Fantasia and it was a BOMB.

Unfortunately, with WWII, and America at that point in time was short of material (resources was diverted to war effort), not many cinema was fitted with the "Special" equipment for the Fantasound which was a pity, being on of the first surround sound material out there.

Am watching it in HD, and it is BREATHTAKING!!!

I have watched this several time, on TV (in excerpts), in the movies (when I was in Australia) and on LD, and I have to added, this is the MOST GORGOEUS it has ever looked!!

Kudos Disney, you are the master of HD!!

As for sound, I cannot comment at this point, because i don't have a full Sense Surround setup in K.L.

Gosh, they are doing the Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and the color range is spectacular... (Breath Mov_Freak, breath...)

Walt Disney supposedly swore that he would NEVER release this masterpiece in home video and while he was alive, it never happened.

I for one am glad the Disney company had decided otherwise and release this in HD!!

Disney is having a good year. Toy Story 3, Tangled and now the release of Beauty and The Beast and also the Fantasia/Fantasia 2000...

Now if only they'll quickly release Aladdin and Lion King as well... (fingers crossed, FINGERS CROSSED!!)

Reign of Assassins (2010) [Chinese]

I have watched TONS of martial arts movies.

Ever since the Shaw Brothers era.

I have seen martial arts' movies with all kinds of stories and have to say that this is pretty unique!

A lot of attention had been put into the storyline and it works!

I love the "dispel water sword". Even the sound they created for it is attractive.

Being a jaded martial arts movie/comic buff and the movie had a couple or twist which took me off guard, is saying something!!

I have two peeves though....

1) I've NEVER seen people [ladies especially] who goes thru plastic surgery to look older

2) New martial art movie would try to emulate this (cheapening this somehow...)

Other then that, I strongly recommend this to people who loves martial art movies

Devil (2010)

Ah, Mr. M. Night Shyamalan.

Many a thing is said about Mr. Night, and I'll reiterate, he is a pretty good writer!

He co wrote this and it is a VERY GOOD horror movie!

Very simple. Very direct! Great pacing and lots of FUN!!!

You do NOT want the elevator lights to go off, but deep DEEP down inside you kinda do, because you want to know what THE devil does next!!

Easily the BEST Horror movie for 2010.

Proves that you DON'T have to have a budget like Avatar to make a good movie (this movie was made with 10 million dollars, pittance by Hollywood standard)

Added on December 16, 2010, 12:38 pmDetective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010)

I really REALLY luv Hark Tsui movie during the 80s and early 90s... and then something happened. He went to Hollywood and something in him broke and his movies were never the same again....

His latest outing might win me back as an avid follower though!! smile.gif

Beautiful production, interesting storyline.

Nice to see all the oldies coming back out (truth to be told, I can hardly keep up with the young'un TVB is churning out...)

Andy Lau, Carina Lau, Tony Leung Ka Fai and surprisingly, Teddy Robin Kwan etc...

Now for the historically correct viewer, be warned, how the HECK in 683 A.D (when Empress Wu, became Empress Wu) did a Greek general visit China using ships from 16th Century Europe??????!!!

Mr Tsui, you should know better!!!!!

Other then the above, this is a above average movie from Hong Kong/China
