Hi I am a first time buyer of a landed property and I am not sure of extension norms. I am in the process of buying a property and realised a septic tank cover in the back yard (picture attached). Does that mean I cannot do any extension in the backyard? Even if I leave the cover area out, is it safe to construct anything in backyard? Ofcourse with council approval.
Thanks

Double check, but it should be the maintenance manhole (where all the individual sewer outlets join) and not an actual septic tank.

Noted. If it is a maintenance manhole then can I build an extension very close to it and not cover it?

Can. I know people who have built their kitchen with this manhole inside also, with no problem

You can build your rear extension .. but make sure when you design your space .. example your kitchen area does not block the manhole area … and when submit to council the summiting person (sp) need to specify type of finishing with perimter airtight cover .

See example

Hope this help

even with Septic tank there... still can extend your landed house...

contractors should know how to cover it... & easy access when IWK comes to suck the tank contents out every 2 years...

BUT make sure your area not flood prone... because would overflow out into your home if flood time whistling.gif
