All nicely sequential running numbers. Then we come to BMW and Porsche

Does anybody know how the boffins at Porsche and BMW decide on their model codes? It looks so random and... un-German

I’m a Porsche driver, and I’ve given up on their internal naming nomenclature….

Because BMW is driving machines and a lot more than unconventional , it appeal more to right brain, not like the very sober and sensible and serious business Mercedes

VW and Audi also project the same sensibility and albeit mix it up with perfromance.

Porsche is luxury sports brand "driven en by dream"

Very right brain, abstract and emotion appealing

I think the model naming convention therefore follow path of the brand,

I learned something quite interesting today… Porsche makes the Boxster/Cayman series… internally these were called 987 and 981.

Porsche also makes the 911 series, internally, the past 2 gens were named 997 and 991.

The reason was because these 2 previous generations shared a lot of architecture in the build, and a lot of 997nand 991 parts can ben found in the 987 and 981!

All that’s changed with the advent of the present 992 generation of 911 though.

Porsche's model numbering originated from the number of design drawings that gotten them to the final production sketch.

Original 911 was drawing no. 901 but that was already trademarked by someone else (Peugeot if not mistaken) and they simply renamed it 911.

At least that's what I was being told in VW Autostadt Stuttgart few months ago
