Microsoft acquires land in Johor, Malaysia, for data center
Company buys land from Crescendo Corporation
April 05, 2024
By Dan Swinhoe

Microsoft has acquired a plot of land in Johor, Malaysia, likely for a data center.

Local property development firm Crescendo Corporation Berhad (CCB) this week announced it had sold a 102,560 sqm (1.1 million sq ft) plot of land in the Pulai area of Johor to Microsoft.

CCB’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Panoramic Industrial Development Sdn. Bhd., has entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with Microsoft Payments (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. for a cash consideration of RM132,471,276 ($27.9m). The deal is expected to complete in Q4 2042.

According to CBB, the land can only be used for a medium industry area for the purposes of data center and associated uses.

Microsoft announced plans for a Malaysian Azure cloud region in Kuala Lumpur back in 2021; the region is still listed as “coming soon” on the company’s website.

Johor, located in Malaysia’s south, is just across the border from Singapore. Though Singapore is starting to ease restrictions around its ongoing moratorium on new data center developments, Johor has grown a sizeable data center market of its own as developments overspill from the city-state.

Other developers and operators in Johor include PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, ChinData's Bridge DC, and Yondr.

Microsoft opened its Singapore Azure cloud region in 2010; the region has three availability zones. The company was selected as one of four companies granted permission to build new data center capacity in Singapore last year.

Crescendo Corporation has previously sold land in Johor to STT GDC for a data center development.

Yes! A new Microsoft Azure datacenter setting up shop here is a game-changer for businesses. Faster cloud services, especially for those already using Azure. And a magnet effect for tech companies. This means more tech jobs in our region, even if the datacenter itself won't have a ton of openings.

MYR dropping another 10% will attract more tech jobs than 10 more data centers. We gonna become another IT hub like India rclxm9.gif

According to my sauces in TNB, no. I forgot the deets but we are hitting our limit or something.

They're in the midst of building new power grid or power station or something. I'm not good with all the eletric punya terms but yeah, they're increasing the mW we're generating right now.

Yes it will. Nothing to do with routing.

More stuff closer == smoother, less reliance on international links.

Look at 9.9.9.9. Even with AS42 peering with MyIX, AS4788 ™ sends packets to 9.9.9.9 to Singapore instead of just handing it off in MyIX.

Example 2: despite having a MyIX node in Kuching, someone in Kuching connecting to a server in Kuching on a network peering with MyIX will hairpin to CBJ before coming back to Kuching. It is noticable with the latency.

If AS9534 (Maxis) can send packets destined for AS42 via MyIX instead of to Singapore, I stand by my original statement: only if TM fixes their routing.

One of the delusion of grandeur + low self image in some of us Malaysians.

When want something... demanded the BEST or none at all. Asalkan not losing to neighbouring countries.

hard to progress if like that. bosses local or foreign pantang see such an attitude in employees.

physically closer, not means is virtually closer. it depend on the network topology deployed. they can route all johor traffic to KL and then back to johor again all with the same hardware deployed in Johor and KL.

I don't rely on TM. I have my own ASN and run BGP.

I can influence my own route (like TM), but certain things are beyond my control. 9.9.9.9 for example is anycast, which is not affected by BGP.

Example 2 I have never personally experienced on IP Transit, either with Johor/SG DE-CIX or Equinix, but I concede is possible.

Good on you to have your own ASN and get to announce your own BGP routes.

Peasants like me will have to wait for TM to fix their routing.

Data centres make up the bulk of RM144.7bil in approved digital investments
Wednesday, 24 Apr 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) announced today that of the RM144.7 billion approved digital investments between 2021 and 2023, data centres make up RM114.7 billion, creating 39,231 job opportunities.

Its minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that in 2021 the approved investments were RM3.4 billion, RM80.8 billion in 2022 and RM60.5 billion last year coming from various organisations including Amazon, GDS, YTL and ByteDance.

While approved investments are vital to build up the momentum, he said MITI also gives strong focus on realised investments.

He said that from 2021 to February 2023, there were 2,386 manufacturing projects approved by the National Committee on Investments. From the 1,802 or 75.5 per cent of the projects implemented, 1,597 projects were at the inception stage and 205 are at the construction of buildings or manufacturing facilities stage.

Out of the approved projects, 551 (23.1 per cent) were in the planning stage, while 33 or 1.4 per cent were not implemented due to a change in the respective companies’ strategy, said Tengku Zafrul at the press conference to announce MITI’s first quarter report card here today.

The ministry, he said, will continue to focus on both domestic and foreign direct investments.

As for the performance of the Project Implementation and Facilitation Office (TRACK), he said a total of 802 cases facilitated since its establishment with key issues linked to Customs, power supply, one stop centre -local council and immigration.

On the trade outlook, Tengku Zafrul said trade is set to improve in 2024, but challenges remain amid geopolitical uncertainties. - Bernama

Finally firms with concerns about data sovereignty can use Azure.
