Singapore Airlines flight #SQ232 to Singapore returned to Sydney. Today Sunday, April 7 2024, the flight #SQ232 departed Sydney at 11:20 AEST but stopped its climb shortly after departure. The flight was operated by an A380 (registration 9V-SKM) which is 13 years old. The aircraft entered a hold at 10,000 ft over the ocean, likely to reduce fuel weight in preparation for return to Sydney. Max landing weight is about 390 t. So with about fuel load of120 t, the crew probably had to dump a bit of fuel for a safe landing. Aircraft can still land above max landing weight, but it’s not desirable. It’ll slow down turnaround, requiring inspections and time for brake cooling.

QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Apr 8 2024, 08:47 AM) Those plane that dump fuel at sea.... Not consider as sea pollution? You rather see 300 people die then when they land with heavy fuel and burst into flames. Common sense lah bro

If not because the fuel is too expensive, they should be thrown out of the plane to observe the fuel will evaporate before they smash to the ground.

QUOTE(Diesel 86 @ Apr 8 2024, 09:03 AM) actually why not make like fighter jets with fuel drop tanks. dump ady still collect back and re-use assuming jets also can re-use. Doubt the tanks can actually be reused as falling to the ground will definitely damage the structure. Also, isnt it later become a unguided petrol bomb? lol Besides, you dare to take plane that re-use such tanks? But then, since it is metal, it can recycled and remake again gua. QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Apr 8 2024, 08:47 AM) Those plane that dump fuel at sea.... Not consider as sea pollution? Next time fly in starship. Confirm no fuel dumping as it can go full powa and get to destination in the time it takes to circle around this A380. Even if couple of engine shit down, still a go. More environmentally friendly. And more is less.

QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Apr 8 2024, 09:04 AM) How the pilot know need to dump how much fuel? Airline consider those fuel as lost profit? if the plane can even calculate the weight at each wing side, what makes you think the plane can't calculate how much weight to dump for landing?

QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Apr 8 2024, 09:04 AM) How the pilot know need to dump how much fuel? Airline consider those fuel as lost profit? I am sure the pilots have all the loading datas on the plane. The rest is depend on the plane spec itself whether can land under certain weight. Better fuel lost than a total lost?

At least can dump fuel. Imagine some aircraft full tank have to fly in circles for few hours to get to safe landing weight.

QUOTE(moiskyrie @ Apr 8 2024, 08:47 AM) Those plane that dump fuel at sea.... Not consider as sea pollution? Airplane fuels usually evaporate fast la. They are not using diesel but kerosene based fuels such as JP-1A. JP-1A, just like any other kerosene will evaporate very fast once it is exposed. I have used kerosese before in kitchen stoves. Usually if buy Bottle and cap is exposed, it will reduce
