Hi guys, I'm looking to get a desktop for gaming purpose. Budget would be below RM4k, seeking help for any sifu here which specs are the best for this budget? Currently using 8yo dinosaur working laptop which is giving me hell of a time. Many thanks in advance.

If possible you should wait. AMD Zen 5 is launching probably as early as July, which seems to be a huge improvement over the currrent cpus. If anything, new launch means price drop for older cpus anyway.

Waiting till Q3 of the year is alright to me. Does that mean the rest of specs should wait till then to be built?

Yeah, unless you see got sales on ssd or ram can buy now. Otherwise its just going to sit in a box for months. Up to you la you can build your system now also no problem. Up to your needs and wants.

Thanks bro Gibson and Tristanx.

I read up the thread on rig recommendations post and noticed that's proper place to post. Anyway, from there I'm aware AMD mobo can still cater for future upgrade into year 2026, while Intel's couldn't do that. Not sure if I'm getting it correctly. If yes, then I would prefer to go for AMD.

If AMD is the option, what would be the recommended rig for 4k budget? I guess I will have to compare the prices of Viewnet etc with Shopee and source them accordingly. How much is the assembly cost?

Thanks sifus for your help thumbsup.gif

AMD AM5 will turn RM4k budget into crappy gaming rig. Motherboard and DDR5 is expensive.

AM4? Unless you have enough budget for 5700X3D for a decent gaming rig and still a dying platform. Anything less is a waste of money.

Correct, it is downright foolish to buy Intel now when the next motherboard socket will be obsolete in the next Arrow Lake refresh. AM5 was launched in 2022 and is confirmed to be upgradable until 2026. Cross fingers can be even longer than that, the older AM4 was supported for 6 years. Re assembly cost, it is usually free if you buy all at the same shop. DIY is quite fun though I encourage to do that. Can watch videos from LTT and see how to do it

The later you wait the shittier ringgit will be so prices either stays or go up while older cheaper stuff gets cleared out from market leaving you with less choice than today lah. Traditionally its better to wait but not in our shitty Madani economy. There are also some taxes delayed so they bound to come in later which will further kill our buying power. If you want to buy, BUY NOW!

And yes for RM 4k, it isnt much these days as your likely to get previous gen stuff ie Intel 12th gen, Ryzen 5000series, RTX 3000series, previous gen Radeon 6000s were very good value for money for budget builds but their sold out these days sadly. And at this budget level no need think about longevity, neither Intel LGA1700 nor AM4.

AM5 will last longer being the latest but at your budget level your aint gonna get a decent gaming system (even at pisspoor 7500F + cheapest B650M + 6000MHZ DDR5) unless your willing to go with APU while saving money for a GPU later.

PS going full AMD is just asking to be your own computer technician as apparently stability issues tends to come out.

Well I think I'm starting to understand the situation. AM5 can run longer into future but with the system built around AM5, it's impossible to get within 4k budget. And although with less expensive AM4, it's actually similar to Intel which is a dying platform(no upgrade in future). As of budget constraints (and possible AMD technicality concern?), it would be more suitable for me to take on above Intel's rig. Appreciate all the sifus advice here, will proceed with it then. And glad to be here though, cheers.

- Aim for a mid-range AMD Ryzen or Intel Core i5 processor.
- For graphics, consider a GeForce GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT.
- Get at least 16GB of RAM and a combination of SSD and HDD storage.
- Choose a reliable motherboard, power supply, and a case with good airflow.

I mean standard stuff.

With shitty ringgit and price hikes. RM1k is not going to get you any gaming setup. Cannot even fit i5, mobo and RAM. i7-4790 also not advisable for today's games.

Gonna be tough since psu is also inadequate. I suggest upgrading in stages.

First,

RX 6600 (1080p medium settings) - 889
MSI A650BN power supply - 205
8GB DDR3 (do not overspend on this one)

Later,

Core i5-12400F - 550
MSI B760M-E - 450
G.Skill Aegis 8GB DDR4-3200 X2 - 190
Adata XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB - 299
