I was suspected to have GERD last Monday after visiting the ER doctor and will be referred to a Gastroenterology next Monday for confirmation.

It was all quite sudden, i started experiencing minor acid reflux symptoms about 2 weeks ago and it does not seem to go away. Went to a normal clinic and was diagnosed with "indigestion" and was given antacid and charcoal pill. On that night itself, the symptoms got worst so I went to the ER in Sunway Hospital and then the bad news came sad.gif

Is anyone here suffering from GERD and for how long already? What steps are you taking to manage the symptoms so they do not interfere with normal lifestyle?

I have been doing some article reading regarding GERD and it appears to be a very grim condition in the sense that there is no permanent cure.

I have not been able to focus since I was told that I may have GERD.

Help =(

My appointment with the Gastroentrologist is next Monday so will see what she has to say about my condition and what type of tests are required to conduct to properly diagnose my condition.

I am also praying hard that my condition is not as serious as I think it is.

Which doctor did you see in Pantai KL - mind to share?

I may seek for a second medical opinion.

Good that you are visiting a specialist, see what she has to recommend.

Couple of my family members having it, after checkup its initial temporary relief medicines thereafter its basically lifestyle change.

It all depends what are your trigger points, for some, its milk, spicy or oily food, etc.

Some says probiotics helps as well. All the best, bang!

Right now, i have no idea at all and i do not know what to think.

Very disturbed to be honest.

I think my cousin had this. Is this where the 'cap' to the stomach remained in 'open' position and the acidic stuffs flow the reverse way when lying down?
*
Yeah, the "cap" is called the "lower esophageal sphincter".

Not only that it allows the gastric juice to flow back wards when lying down but also allows the acid to escape from the stomach even when standing up right causing the burning sensation called "heart burn".

How long has your cousin been having it and how is he/she holding up?

Im not too sure when he had it. He resigned not long after mco and later over heard my brother sharing his health problem. I think I could possibly also have this symptom sometimes when I burped continously after having certain meals. Previously I dont have this problem but I think it started after I went for a few chiro session. After one of the session, I felt much easier to breath but always felt like gassy ever since. Personally I change my hating habit by skipping lunch and it seems to be better nowadays. As for my cousin, I think doctor told him to reduce meals portion since he used to gallop every leftovers whenever we went for group lunches.
*
Reducing meal portions seems like the first thing that all doctors would advise.

Are you aware of his condition now (whether it improved or worsen) and is he on any medication?

Better but is skinnier as a result. Medication wise Im not sure.

For me, I also try not to eat full/too full for dinner. Im a late sleeper (or rather early? 1-2am) so now I take junks or chocolate if I feel hungry. I also try to reduce intakes of cakes with cream.

Good to hear that there are positive news to his new regime. I wished I could talk to him regarding his current condition and how he has been coping. It is going to be a relieve knowing that GERD is not a death sentence.

I read that high fat food (eg: chocolate/junk food) will increase the risk of contracting GERD so you better watch out before it is too late.

U are seeing specialist already didnt they advise u what to do? And given medications?

Rather than asking /K

Btw have u done scoping? GERD may be sign of stomach ulcer.
*
Not yet, the specialist appointment is next Monday so until then i can only sit tight. My initial diagnosis was from an ER doctor in Sunway Hospital who suspected GERD because of the symptoms I described to him. According to him, it's a "classical" case of acid reflux.

Was prescribed Nexium-Mups for 10 days and Gaviscon to soothe the acid (when necessary).

I assume that the specialist will conduct the scoping when I meet with her next Monday and I am hoping that the cause of my GERD is something of a reversible / curable nature.

This is not "/k" by the way so I don't expect silly answers and I just need to know (or the comfort) of knowing that there are people out there who is also suffering from GERD and is coping well.

gerd is not that bad and its more common than you think. avoid drinks with caffeine like coffee and tea, spicy/deep fried food, eat at regular interval, avoid supper. try to take some probiotics as it can help to relieve your gastric symptoms too.

is GERD really common? i know people experience acid reflux from time to time but not constant/frequent.

i experience some acid reflux whenever i eat but if i control the type of food/portion then most of the time i will be alright but if i accidentally take in a trigger food (eg: eggyolk/black pepper) then symptoms can lasts for up to half a day and it's really suffering.

i have totally cut out caffeine, spicy, fried / really oily food for now. i also made sure that my last meal of the day will be latest at 9:00pm and no further.

am starting a regular/fix time eating regime (breakfast/lunch/dinner), wheat biscuits in between and see if that will help manage my symptoms more properly so that i may have a life closer to normal, eventually.

went for a scope yesterday and the doctor found everything to be normal so i'm currently off Nexium and is put on Dexilant and Ganaton for 2 weeks.

does any GERD sufferers really get better with time by managing their lifestyle cause right now, it's quite depressing to think about my current situation.

All the best TS how are your symptoms now?

Did you consider meal prepping or catering food specifically suitable for your diet requirements?

I have a relative with similar symptoms and the dietary restrictions seems quite challenging so maybe preparing your own meals or getting someone else to prepare it specifically to your needs is the way to go (of course I realize this may not work for everyone)

During my endoscopy, pieces of my stomach / esophagus were taken for biopsy and the report revealed (i) occasional H. pylori seen and (ii) moderate chronic gastritis although these two (2) weren't spotted by the doctor performing the endoscopy back then.

I was put on KLACID HP for 2 weeks and just finished the entire course last Sunday, went to follow up yesterday and the doctor basically just asked how i felt over the course and i said i felt better (not sure whether it was due to the medicine or the strict diet that i have been adhering to) but i still sometimes feel the occasional mild burning sensation around the stomach region and so far very rarely any episodes of heartburn except when i eat insufficiently (i think and suspected).

I also get this menthol / minty feeling in my mouth usually after sometime i had a light meal but they tend to go away after i eat (not sure what is that all about).

I asked her whether my symptoms (heartburn etc.) were typical of H.pylori / Gastritits and she said yes so i'm now banking on that fact to move on.

I am scheduled for the urea breath test (UBT) on 27/05/2024 to determine whether the H.pylori has been completely eradicated or not but in the meantime, i think i will focus on healing my gastritis first - the doctor is still quite reluctant to confirm to me what caused my symptoms hmm.gif

... before she sent me on my way yesterday, she put me on a further 2 weeks of Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) 30mg to help manage my stomach acid before stopping all medicine/antacids.

I hope i will get better.
