These guys who argue they need tariff... really like to sponsor Kroni to built cars that are sub par quality, technologically backward cars and overpriced.

Here in Malaysia... we would ask them to f off.

We understand the need to support local industry... if you are not competitive.. no amount of Tongkat will make people want your local car brands. pls stick to processing Rubber, Palm oil, Durian, Sweet crude to higher value downline times.

Or in Developed countries case, just keep to growing, Apple, Corn, Soya beans, Pigs... (btw... all Apple, Orange, Soya bean, Corn and farm animals in all countries that produce them, are also subsidized... to make them more appealing to international markets... to remove competitors.

The battery-electric Omoda E5 SUV is offered with RM11,000 in savings, from its list price of RM146,800. Initially arriving as a fully imported model from China, the Omoda E5 is now locally assembled in Kulim, Kedah.

Still too expensive, since they CKD there should be some advantage in term of tax. At least after 2025. If they wanna capture good slice of market share, they should just price it like max 10% higher than their price in China.

But we are still in 2024, so I guess they need not rush to stoop too low too fast.

At 135k+, they are still cheaper than many of their rivals and better spec than stalwart BYD Atto 3 and new comer Leapmotor C10 although more compact in size

It looks like Chery is leaving the low end fighting to be in between MG ZS EV and Neta X at the price range of 100k +-

Chery still have one more EV coming early next year wearing Jaecoo badge I..e J6 so me think they can afford to buy themselves some time before end of 2025 comes to even fight price war further when others do so...

Last but not least Chery has reasons to be a little bit more stucked up?

Seems like price war would continue next year and 2026, Chinese brand would transfer their over supply stock and offer more options.
Question is how Malaysian and Japanese brands going to compete? Follow cheaper and better offer or don't care or?

Chery’s Boss Warns China’s Carmakers Against Malicious Price Wars in Overseas Markets

(Yicai) Nov. 13 -- Chinese automakers should avoid malicious low-price competition when expanding overseas and instead follow local rules and contribute to societies abroad, said Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Automobile.

New energy vehicles and smart cars have developed quickly in China but more slowly in some other countries, partly due to infrastructure and the difference between oil and electricity prices, Yin said yesterday at the 31st China Society of Automobile Engineers Congress, which opened on Nov. 11.

Chinese carmakers should help those local brands with the new technology, just as they themselves benefited in the past by learning from foreign brands, he said. The goal should be differentiation, not direct competition with local auto giants, he pointed out.

While foreign brands previously enjoyed commercial success in China, they also contributed to the localization of China’s auto industry, including developing local talent, supply chains, and regulatory frameworks, Yin noted.

These efforts not only supported the growth of local companies but also enhanced their quality, cost control, and workforce capabilities, he said, adding that Chery learned much of its export practice from the foreign brands doing business in China.

Finally, Yin pointed out that the NEV business cannot be run at a loss. Some automakers hope for large returns from the capital market to make up for their operational shortcomings, a business model that is unsustainable, he said.

Anhui-based Chery sold a record 2,024,948 cars in the first 10 months of this year, a 39 percent jump from a year earlier. Some 403,118 were NEVs, there times more than in the same period of 2023, while overseas sales climbed 24 percent to 941,275.

Instead of running at a lost. They should adopt a strategy similar to Tesla.

BYD, + Toyota+ Xpeng+ Proton, Perodua, Honda, Mercedes, BMW... - really need to work together to develop Supercharger DC stations that are available to all EV and enjoy the tax break that way....
