Would appreciate if any experts can advise on how to upgrade my 10 years old system which I occasionally upgrade parts by parts over the years. Recently has been lagging and hearing loud noises from my CPU during running some games or videos, unsure if its from GPU or processors or RAM.

Currently use my PC mainly for google browser, creating simple website, microsoft office, occasional short video video editing, gaming like Dota/MMO/Genshin.
Budget RM5000-6000. I am thinking of upgrading my processors, MOBO, RAM but any advise is welcome. I am stuck with compatibility issues as the rig is rather old. Thanks in advance. smile.gif

~6k budget will give you a very capable i5-14400 with RTX4070 build, 32GB RAM

Can reuse your PSU, casing

not an expert here

but loud noises likely coming from the fans. could be due to the hardware is pushing max to run whatever that it is running, some factors due to:

- need to replace the thermal paste on either CPU/GPU
- accumulated dust around the fans, making the fans spinning inefficiently

but upgrade CPU + Mobo + RAM (to a DDR4/5) sounds about a thing that i would suggest as well, maybe opt for aftermarket coolers (either AIO liquid cooler/fan) while you're at that

You can keep your SSD, case, PSU. That's pretty much it if you want a whole new system. If you want to keep RAM it's ok but ddr3 speeds a bit too slow for current usage. In fact I'd start over without the case so you feel like you have new computer.

You need to choose AMD or intel. Currently Intel i7-14700F is very good value for money BUT AMD AM5 will have longer life, i.e. 3 more years you still can use back the same motherboard and upgrade just the processor. Intel already eol for this socket next year will change.

Your usage quite light in terms of gaming. I'd start with processor and motherboard+RAM first, then only see if you need GPU upgrade. Maybe around 3-3.5k first for Proc+mobo+RAM and new 1tb SSD if you need the storage.

AMD can choose 7700x. Intel i7-14700F

Budget of 5k is good enough

If your upgrade cycle is very long (8-10 years), then don't worry about getting something that's kinda lack of upgrade for CPU

ProcessorIntel i5-12400 + H610~RM 1100
RAM16GB DDR5~RM 300-400
SSDPCIE4 NVME 1TB~RM 500

Your choice of GPU, PSU and case to fit all in, as well as processor cooling, for the rest of the money

You can significantly boost your system's performance by upgrading your CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Look for a modern CPU like an Intel Core i5-11600K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, along with a compatible motherboard and DDR4 RAM. These upgrades should fit within your budget and resolve the lagging and noise issues you're experiencing.

Suggest you to buy brand new CPU. Old one keep it to run other things such as crypto project or mining crypto.

If your PC's been lagging and making noises, it sounds like it's definitely time for an upgrade! For your budget, I'd go for a new CPU and motherboard. That’s usually the biggest boost you can get. Pair that with 16GB of RAM, which should handle everything you’re doing just fine.

If your GPU is also getting old, consider upgrading it too, especially if you're gaming. Just make sure to check that all the new parts are compatible with your current case and power supply. I’ve had good luck using PCPartPicker to avoid compatibility issues.

Well, no profit earning if you are mining BTC. But yes old PC you can use to do those new crypto projects and wait for mainnet airdrop.

Sounds like you're ready for a nice upgrade! I'd focus on getting a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM first. Look for a recent Intel or AMD Ryzen processor that’ll give you a solid boost for gaming and multitasking. Bumping up your RAM to at least 16GB will help a ton, especially since you're doing some video editing too. Since you’re dealing with compatibility issues, just remember that you’ll need DDR4 RAM with a new motherboard since your current DDR3 won’t fit. If your budget allows, consider upgrading the GPU as well; the GTX 970 is showing its age, and a newer model would make a big difference. Just double-check that your PSU can handle any new hardware.

Sounds like your setup could really use a boost! I’d recommend upgrading your CPU, motherboard, and RAM first since those are likely slowing things down. Going for a Ryzen 5 or a newer Intel i5 would make a big difference. You'll need a new motherboard that supports the new CPU and DDR4 RAM, so I'd aim for at least 16GB of RAM to help with multitasking and gaming. Your GTX 970 is still okay for casual games, but if you want better performance, consider something like a GTX 1660 Super or an RTX 2060 if you can swing it. Just double-check that your PSU can handle any new GPU you choose.

change to latest GPU rtx4770ti or rtx4990
maximize ddr3 slot with siimilar model, clock & frequency if you can still find in the market
upgrade storage size 2tb
if you using cpu fan cooler, just change the fan or buy new cpu cooler
install win11 then good to go for next coming years

i'm too lazy to upgrade new CPU as my current one can support all latest games and work stuff more than 10 years
