1-5 years away from retirement. Yes, that's quite a large range but my retirement goalposts are constantly being moved as I hit certain milestones.

1. spend as much time with parents as they're getting older
2. continue helping friends overseas move to SEA and retire
3. develop more opportunities for friends looking to retire/semi-retire in SEA

Thanks for sharing. You might even make no 2 and 3 into a retirement business !

are you fully retiring, doc?

i thought you will still continue with your private practice on and off.

No, part time still, but in Australia. I’m calling time in Singapore… can’t keep shuttling back and forth. Too taxing and the travelling is taking a toll physically. But you know the pace is sooooo much slower Down Under. It will be like full retirement for me hahaha

so how many months will you be working in Australia in a year? 3?

I’ll start off 3 days a week for about 6 to 7 months of the year first… gotta take it slow….

Well, we’ll be doing quite a fair bit of traveling during those 6 or so months off work… definitely a lot of domestic travel especially to scout out post post retirement homes in Tasmania. She Who Must Be Obeyed has quite set her sights on a final retirement in Tassie….

Thanks to parents, travel all done.  Business first class and even private jet all done before I even got a job

My dream would be to buy a rural property in the English countryside and live there until I die 😂

Good for you my friend

Tasmania?

Isnt that like a very boring place with bad flight connections?

We loved it... the air is crisp and fresh and the water is crystal clear... and by the time we end up there, we'll be well into our 70's ... it's not a bad place to die.

Sounds like James Boag’s beer ad, crisp and fresh and great quality water. Were you born in the 1950s? Wouldn’t you want to be there earlier to enjoy Tasmania more? Cape Grim beef is nice too, supposedly.

Hahaha… no, not that ancient bro. I’m in my 50’s, not born in the 50s hahaha. Cheers mate

So, the plan post retirement in Australia is broadly speaking, to spend the first 10 to max 15 or so "still productive" years in Sydney, where my network is, my part-time practice is and where I'm most familiar with things.

This is obviously because I'll still be working 3 days a week for at least half a year per year initially (just to keep my mind occupied).

Once I'm finally ready to call time on even the Sydney part time practice (probably in 10 years' time), we'll move down to Melbourne where we've kept a holiday home (presently tenanted) for the next 5 or 10 years. Just for a change of scenery, and to acclimatize to the weather (personally, I love winters and prefer that to hot climates).

And if that works, we'll make the final move to Tasmania to spend the rest of our (final) days. It's a reverse migration, but for now, one that seems to work for us.

Of course, we might hate the weather and the cold and the rains so much that we'll move back up to Sydney or maybe back to Singapore.... who knows.

Which part of Tasmania? If you can share.

Probably Hobart or Launceston - close to amenities, but still within easy walking distance to nature.

I plan to work till I physically cannot anymore. Maybe reduce the amount of patients I see or just plain provide consultations but not gonna close shop. Have a gynae in kuching who's hitting 75 years old still running his clinic but at least he's no longer doing surgeries.
*
Well, I'm also not entirely closing shop, but I'm choosing to work at a slower pace smile.gif

Just to flesh out the answer a little... waifu is keen for something single level, so no townhouses or mansions (thankfully, can't afford those on a retiree's savings), but it also means we're happy with just an apartment (which I think would be ideal as we grow older).
