Heartbreak for Harimau Malaya as they lose to Bahrain, no thanks to a late goal

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's hopes of making it out of the group stage are as good as over in the Asian Cup.

A stoppage-time goal broke Harimau Malaya's strong resolve as they lost 0-1 to Bahrain in the second Group E match of the Asian Cup at the Jassim Hamad Stadium on Saturday (Jan 20).

The side led by South Korean Kim Pan-gon produced a defensive masterclass led by Buriram United centreback Dion Cools but it all ended in vain as they continued their winless run in the group.

Dion was in his element as he won 10 duels, made six recoveries and 13 clearances to keep the Middle East side at bay for most of the match.

But Bahraini winger Ali Madan was unstoppable as he broke the solid defense to score the winner in the 96th minute injury time to give the Dilmun Warriors their first win in the group.

While Bahrain celebrated, the Malaysians slumped on the field in sheer disappointment as they had given a better account of themselves but it wasn't enough.

Before the game against Bahrain, Malaysia had played poorly to lose 0-4 to Jordan on Jan 16.

Malaysia will next face tournament favourites South Korea at the Jassim Hamad Stadium on Jan 25.

With two defeats, it's hard for Malaysia to win a spot in the last 16 unless they beat the mighty South Korea by a big margin.

tbh, this is the only squad i see in the past 20 yrs who know how to hold the ball and have guts to fire shots into opponent goal. last time our players lose ball easily and even shy to shoot into opponent goal

Play 541….

Confirm lar keep on being in defense mode and once in a blue moon counter attack

They are not used to play those formation before this…

Can clearly see the players early on a bit awkward witht he formation

KPG kena bashed too much when he used 3-4-3

Now over corrected, play 5-4-1.

But still, it was an OK formation.

I blame Paulo and Natxo for not doing much. 9 players have to carry 2 deadweights.

kan... i bet many comment here didnt even watch the game. almost solid first half with at least 3 4 chances of goal, but over relying on faizal and arif make them tired. malaysia need play maker in midfield to carry the game up. paulo and natso didnt really shine

Shit vs shit level, that why we hope would could win.

BTW every group have a mix of strong and weak teams.

India group has Syria (rank 90+), Hong Kong has Palestine (rank 90+), China group has TWO team ranked 100+.

Malaysia unlucky, got in a group with South Korea and then two rank 80+ teams.

Look at that. That is the highest Malaysia Fifa ranking in almost 20+ years. Malaysia now can beat teams that are higher in ranking like Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Malaysia started playing with naturalization with Brandon Gan in 2016 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Gan

But the naturalization process really speed up with JDT - Alot of the current naturalized players were brought in to play for JDT then later represent Malaysia.

I have been following Hm for maybe 20 years.

These statistics don’t tell the whole truth.

Against top Asian team, usually the game will be over within 45 minutes or max 70 minutes cause by then we would been losing 2 or 3 goals.

The fact that we able to compete against Bahrain for 90 minutes is an achievement.

If we lose 2 to 3 goals is considered ok already.

Last time we lost 0-6 to Palestine and Oman. Palestine, ya know, negara yang selalu kena tindas Israel. Still can beat us 0-6 wtf

Going back further, Malaysia got whooped 1-5 by China and 0-5 Uzbekistan in 2007 Asian cup.

None of these country are considered "top Asian teams".

Anyone who say "no improvement" doesn't follow Malaysian football.

While everyone said we were knocked out from group stage d , even news article

It is not accurate actually

Technically if we put aside Korean as the favorite , if we can trash Korea by a huge huge margin , we can still qualify
By huge I mean 10-0 , possible to qualify on goal difference depending on the rest of the matches which will be played at same time

Yes yes I know it’s Korea but purely calculation wise we can still qualify

Writer or TS in dreamland thinking current pandans can even win. Shame to the real tigers to use their name. Bunch of school kids playing in the real pitch. No discipline or skills but big headed.

From what I read Malaysia and Vietnam knocked out because of the head to head rule.

If 2 teams has the same points, who won the in the head to head fight is placed higher.

So if Bahrain and Malaysia has the points but Bahrain won against Malaysia, Bahrain is place higher. Goal difference doesn't matter unless we draw.

Is it ? I thought the group stage table is solely on GD if WDL is the same
Then 4 best 3rd will enter

Was reading the full competition manual by AFC couldn’t find it

I’m very interested to know as well

Regulations Article 7.3):

Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;

Erm different team dink donk
Dion cools used to play against Manchester United , Mo Salah and many more in Europe
Stuart Wilkins was Southampton youth player
Natxo played for vilareal Zaragoza and Valencia although he played terribly this time
Darren played in national league south , England
Others such as Brendan Gan Matthew Dav , and the rest used to play overseas before coming back to Malaysia

And half of the squad played in AFCCL

What u talking? It doesnt matter where they played before, most of the JDT players are only good in Malaysia local league. At international level, they are garbage. Thats why i said they are overpaid

angmoh players become sayur when playing against arab players. should have naturalized more arab players instead of useless angmoh whose feet become jelly when shooting in front of opponent goal

our Naturalized angmoh or african or other races players are 3rd grade players... probably some 4th grades in their own country league. To us here probaly they are 1st or 2nd grade good enough for our football standards.. but to their respective leagues in their country they are probably 3rd or 4th grade..thats the diff... imagine 1 day ( dream on) we have naturalise players like ronaldo or kylian mpape, or even mo salah or marcus rashford etc then our football in msia is diff la... not possible cause they wont come here and we cannot afford them also...
so whatever it is the result in Asia cup is expected la.. the quality is diff standards from other countries...

Your exact reply was
“ Bunch of overrated overpaid players who are only good in the local league.”

No UEFA champions league is not a local league
Try googling a bit
Also Southampton , La Liga , and Australian league are not in Malaysia as well
