A few days ago, an FIR was filed against Nayanthara's 'Annapoorani' for hurting religious sentiments. Following the case, it was removed from Netflix.
Netflix has removed Nayanthara’s 'Annapoorani' from its platform amid allegations by Hindu groups that it’s an “anti-Hindu” film. A case has been filed against the film for hurting religious sentiments. The film released in theatres on December 1 and started streaming on Netflix from December 29. A week after it was available on the OTT, it has been at the receiving end of criticism.
Ramesh Solanki, founder of the Hindu IT cell, in his complaint, claimed that the film is 'offending Hindu religious sentiments'. The complaint was filed against actors Nayanthara, Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Punit Goenka, Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and the head of Netflix India, Monika Shergill.
NETFLIX REMOVES NAYANTHARA'S 'ANNAPOORANI'
'Annapoorani' opened to negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film is directed by debutant filmmaker, Nilesh Krishnaa. Apart from Ramesh Solanki, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) spokesperson, Shriraj Nair, had also warned Netflix to take down the film.
He took to X to share a clipping from the film and wrote, "We are strictly warning you @NetflixIndia to immediately withdraw this evil movie of yours or else be ready to face legal consequences and @BajrangDalOrg style action. @ZeeStudios_ (sic)."
Following the legal battle, Netflix has removed Nayanthara's 'Annapoorani' from the OTT platform. Zee Studios, one of the producers of the film, has written to Vishwa Hindu Parishad stating that the film will be removed from the platform until edited.
IndiaToday.in reached out to director Nilesh Krishnaa for his reaction. But, the filmmaker refused to comment.
COMPLAINT FILED ON 'ANNAPOORANI'
'Annapoorani' is about a ambitious woman hailing from a Brahmin family living from the conservative town of Srirangam. She is torn between her passion and the orthodox ideals that she had been taught since her childhood. In the film, she does not let her caste and religious differences stop her.
The complaint filed by Ramesh Solanki mentioned that the film was promoting 'love jihad'. However, Nayanthara's Annapoorani and Jai's Farhan share a friendly relationship. Their romantic relationship is not explored in the film.
In another scene in 'Annapoorani', Farhan convinces the heroine to consume meat by explaining that Lord Rama has also eaten meat. In the climax, Annapoorani wears a hijab and offers namaz before making biryani in the final round of a cooking competition.
'Annapoorani' features Nayanthara, Sathyaraja, Jai, Achyuth Kumar, KS Ravikumar, Karthik Kumar and Renuka in pivotal roles.
