So I decided to buy my own oil to bring to a random workshop to change because I am tired of workshops using random cheapskate brand but upon reaching the workshop they charge me RM80 labour + RM30 for oil filter.

I know its expensive but I still proceed anyways because I dint want to ask one by one shops. So to save on oil change labour in the future does anyone here have recommendations for workshop around USJ1 that has a more reasonable rate and do not mind me bringing my own oil?

There is 1 shop i know that didnt mind bringing your own oil but its abit far from USJ1. You can go to KaratBesi Ghettoracing in Glenmarie, they charge reasonable price for labor also.

It’s given when u bring your own things shop will charge slightly higher for thier service

Need to survive

They also have some margin on thier stock and need to push quite abit of stock per month so they get good pricing

If u come with your own oil then they don’t make it and offcourse will charge higher

Not defending but there could be multiple reason

It’s not worth it if you use your own filter and oil at the same time the guy just change the oil and replace filter

Worth it if you use own filter, oil filter and the guy changes the oil. After change he spray cleaner to clean the area so u can spot leakages. Also totally worth it if he replace the oil sump nut as part of the package but likely depends on quality also

To each thier own and those workshop with brand name or Otai in the area will command premium

For me, I rather just the whole thing at the workshop. For me it’s also a way to support the workshop and at the same time allow me to assess if it’s trustable workshop

Once I build that connection will latch onto them coz it’s hard to find reliable, trustworthy and honest workshop. What if it cost me 50 buck more? For me peace of mind is most important. Even my mech took time to come find my car at shopping mall since his house was near to fix my abs cable as car couldn’t start.

All this small things has a bigger effect for you. Also another example my mech took responsibility when my previous car overheated as the tank he replaced wasn’t fitted properly by his machai eventually coolant leaked and engine overheated. He pressure test the engine and found the blocked slightly warped and offered to smoothen back the block as his way of taking accountability

If I go other ahchong bawah pokok sure the pundeis will blame something else and blame me and we argue and spend time fighting…if can avoid this by a 50 buck more expensive service, why not

Its not just "abit steep" , its downright slaughtering at its best.
If any case - this should be reported to KPDNHEP for excessive overcharging. i think the "Persatuan Bengkel" something like that, has a set guidelines of how much should a customer be charged for workmanship fees.

Its not an excuse for "Need to survive " or peace of mind . Consumers should be allowed to bring own parts at their will - and not forced by workshop owners at their will.
This oil change thing is pretty easy actually. One can actually even DIY himself with the right tools.

I've just changed my oil for RM 20 like a month ago, brought my own oil and oil filter even.

Here is a few workshops that charged reasonably for oil changes:

1) FDY Garage - 12, Jalan USJ 1/6c, Taman Subang Permai, 47600 Subang Jaya, Selangor
Owner is a Malay and he is very friendly indeed. Recommended

2) Kian Hoe Tyre & Battery Services Sdn Bhd USJ - 1, Jalan USJ 19/4, (Behind USJ 19 Mall) - Last oil change I did was around RM 17 if I recall last year, may have gone up in price, but allows bringing own parts.

3) Initial Ng Auto Car Repairs- 6, Jalan USJ 7/3a (behind Dewan Serbaguna MBSJ USJ 7) - From what I heard from my uncle , he says its around RM 25 for oil change if bring own. I have no experience with him.

Hope the above info helps for you in future. And before allowing them to do the job: "Ask first" for the price. It doesnt hurt to ask. Thats what I do when I meet a random workshop before beginning of a job. Too expensive? I say "Thank you" , get into my car and drive off.

They’ve to store the used oil and helps you throw away the filter. Time spend should be approx 30 min incl using electricity to jack the car up then clean their hands etc. be considerate

Those are really good workshops. On and Off been to them over the years.

Currently just sticking on to

AS Auto
No. 2, Jalan USJ 1/6, Taman Subang Mewah.
Look for Ah Hong. Very trust worthy. He started off with conti and luxury (Ferrari, lambo, hummer, etc). He is a former racer himself. But he repairs all cars. And you can bring your parts/oils. He also provides replacement drive car, while your car in workshop.

RM80 for just engine oil change is too much.

The labor charges for changing engine oil nowadays in Klang Valley is around 30 - 35. 6 - 7 years back, it used to be 15. Anything more than 35 for labor, its just too much IMHO. I know certain workshop will charge u more than 30 - 35 if you bring your own spare parts..and I will normally stay away from those places...Anyhow if you are buying parts from the workshop, then magic will happen coz labor will be FOC...

Thanks for recommending Fendy. Indeed a friendly and trustable guy.
Wanted to change something that was causing an annoying sound, Fendy told me to not waste money first.. let him diagnose the issue. And turns out he was right, it came from a loose brake light and he tighten it without any extra charges.
