Since 2 decades ago, it has always been nvidia or amd. Which side more bang for buck, which side give more fps.
We never heard a third company challenging the market share. Look at how weak igpu or apu is. We have apple GPU now but still no where to be seen running aaa games at fps comparable to nvidia/amd.
Why out of these world, only these two companies can make gpu?
Last time the GPU is made of generic processors. Many makers were competing until two were getting bigger, Nvidia (US) and ATi (Canada). The custom chips were getting cheaper and cheaper to produce that these company started making own custom GPU chip. The ATi struggled and AMD took over ATi.We never heard a third company challenging the market share. Look at how weak igpu or apu is. Now I think it is even more difficult to go into GPU business unless the company has big resource. Intel and even Microsoft even tried but hard to compete because it is new are for them. Intel hired many chip designers out of AMD but still not success. Now I think AMD is getting stronger because now Intel felt that it is wiser to just use the AMD GPU for its products which can reduce operating cost. I think Sony and Microsoft are going with AMD too.
