If the roof level not enough headroom, don’t thing do you can raise the ceiling up.

Please consider this since it’s a 50-60 year old house
1) new wiring works
2) new plumbing / cold water services .

You need to dismantle the roofing if need to increase ceiling height … old houses probably using wood rafter .. can redesign the roofing back with proper new additional support provided the engineer has calculated the loading and strength for the new structure members …
Don’t simply ask the Indon workers if want to upgrade roof…

Best option .. take out the whole roofing …increase perimeter wall above roof beam … and new roof structure with proper roof insulations …

If budget constrain better focus on the services first …
