Don't need. it has battery inside, just put your sim in(may need to do config, depending on model), connect to wifi and you're done

There are some which is the one you mentioned is like a usb stick where you can plug at your laptop and it will work when the driver is installed

1. Band (see whether it supports our frequency or not, but then normally if you buy local set this can be ignored)
2. Speed (max is 4G/3G)
3. WiFi Speed (802.11n, 802.11ac) - Preferably 802.11ac but not a must
4. Number of supported users - some are capped at 5, 10.
5. Battery - the more the merrier

for those that you buy from telco (digi, maxis, celcom, umobile), normally the device could be locked (subjected to telco company and model) aka the device will only work for their sim. You will need to unlock it to be able to put other telco's sim into it. If you buy from outside then its unlocked normally
