Starbucks Malaysia operator Berjaya Food Bhd (5196) (BFood) reported a net loss of RM91.5 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024 (FY24) compared to a net profit of RM103.4 million in the previous year, on consumer boycotts and a one-time loss from the disposal of Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd.

KUALA LUMPUR: Starbucks Malaysia operator Berjaya Food Bhd (BFood) reported a net loss of RM91.5 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024 (FY24) compared to a net profit of RM103.4 million in the previous year, on consumer boycotts and a one-time loss from the disposal of Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd.

The company's revenue also fell by 34.56 per cent, dropping from RM1.1 billion to RM730.3 million.

BFood said the decline is attributed to current sentiment related to the conflict in the Middle East and a one-time loss from the sale of BFood's entire stake in Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd.

"Excluding the exceptional investment related expenses, the pre-tax loss would have been RM76.84 million as compared to a pre-tax profit of RM148.73 million in the previous financial year," it said.

ADVERTISING

For the fourth quarter of the financial year 2024 (4QFY24), BFood reported a net loss of RM38.2 million, against a net profit of RM17.2 million in the same quarter the previous year (4QFY23).

The company's revenue for the quarter also declined, falling from RM271.7 million to RM130.5 million.

Additionally, BFood recorded a pre-tax loss of RM42.69 million for the current quarter, compared to a pre-tax profit of RM29.04 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

"The significantly lower revenue and pre-tax loss incurred in the current quarter under review were primarily attributed to the current sentiment in relation to the conflict in the Middle East," it added.

In a statement, BFood expressed cautious optimism, anticipating a gradual improvement in operational performance in the next financial year despite the challenges faced.

"The directors recognise the challenging market conditions and external pressures affecting the group's business performance."

"While recovery may be slow due to ongoing current uncertainties, the directors believe that strategic adjustments and operational refinements will, in time, strengthen the group's position and lead to better financial results," it said.

Starbucks Malaysia denies closing more than 100 outlets, says not on BDS list

Publish date: Tue, 29 Oct 2024

Starbucks Malaysia has dismissed as "false" a report that the US coffee company had to cease operations at more than 100 outlets nationwide due to the impact of a boycott of global American brands in response to Washington's support for Israel.

"The claim that more than 100 Starbucks outlets in Malaysia have been shut down is false. While we have ceased operations at only a few stores, most of the allegedly closed locations are only temporarily closed," a Starbucks Malaysia representative told Business Times.

MalaysiaNow today quoted a source as saying that Starbucks, which is linked to tycoon Vincent Tan's Berjaya Group, has had to close or temporarily shut down over 100 outlets across the country, including in major shopping centres and tourist spots.

While the company has not responded to queries from MalaysiaNow at press time, a check on Starbucks Malaysia's website revealed that at least 60 outlets are labelled as either closed or temporarily closed.

However, the Business Times report quotes Starbucks Malaysia as saying that the company is seeing a "positive improvement" in sales and that customers are "starting to realise that the allegations against the brand are not true".

It went on to say that Starbucks has never been a target of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), the global movement that has successfully mobilised consumers around the world to boycott American and Western interests to protest their support of the Israeli war machine.

Starbucks and other major Western fast food companies such as McDonald's and consumer brands such as Nestle are among companies most affected by the campaign, despite creative attempts by their owners in Muslim countries to distance themselves from Washington's policies in the Middle East, where more than 50,000 civilians in Gaza and Lebanon have died as a result of Israel's massive bombardment since October last year.

Starbucks Malaysia, which has more than 400 outlets and 5,000 employees nationwide, is owned by Berjaya Food, part of Berjaya Corporation, the conglomerate linked to prominent billionaire Vincent Tan.

The company also owns the 7-Eleven retail chain, whose chairman is Farhash Wafa Salvador, the former political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

In March, Tan called on Malaysians to end the boycott, repeating the familiar excuse of local ownership and employment of locals, none of which have been able to stem the anti-Israel boycott movement.

The following month, DAP leader and federal minister Nga Kor Ming accused those behind the boycott as "instigators" out to ruin domestic economy.

"Never fall into the trap of instigators, our country needs the efforts of all parties to develop the economy," said Nga, who only last year officiated the opening of a new Starbucks outlet in his ministry in Putrajaya.

Berjaya Food Bhd, a subsidiary of the Berjaya Group led by Malaysian entrepreneur Tan Sri Vincent Tan, has announced that its international subsidiary, Berjaya Food International (BFI), has secured the rights to operate Starbucks stores in Iceland, Denmark, and Finland.

This marks the first entry of a Malaysian-listed food and beverage company into the Nordic market.

BFI plans to focus on local hiring and sourcing while also sharing its culinary and operational expertise.

Datuk Sydney Quays, the CEO of Berjaya Food, expressed excitement about bringing their expertise and commitment to excellence to the vibrant Nordic coffee culture, aiming to showcase Malaysian hospitality and provide a unique experience to local consumers.

The company is also committed to fulfilling Starbucks’ mission and promises regarding community engagement and sustainable development initiatives to enrich local communities in the Nordic region.

Duncan Moir, President of Starbucks Europe, Middle East, and Africa, highlighted their long-standing partnership with Berjaya and expressed enthusiasm about connecting with more customers through handcrafted Starbucks beverages and effectively investing in employees and communities.

In Denmark, BFI will collaborate with Salling Group A/S, the country's largest retail group, to develop the Starbucks brand further, seeing significant potential for opening more locations and attracting new customers.

Since boikot started, I start going Starbucks regularly, like 1-2 times a week.

Bcos lesser crowd, more quiet and chill to do some works. Fast internet speed too.

I even got myself a Starbucks card lol.

Just don’t bankrupt will do

Before the boycott, which coffee shop did you usually go to?

Is Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Malaysia not affected by the boycott?

Since they’re also a U.S. company, how come they haven’t been impacted?

I dont think its because of boycott..

It is because of competition, and they unable compete with restaurant which located at better location..

I went Ikea, used the family card to claim the free coffee then bought a serving of kid's meatballs and kid's nuggets each. Free unlimited black coffee, 5 meatballs, 4/5 nuggets, lots of fries, whipped potatoes, brocolli + parking, all for <RM17..

Different type of complete experience …

Coffee is just a common object sold by all …

Sbux/Coffee Bean type of coffee shop expect you to comfortably sit there and enjoy ambient, the music on their couch …

Zus expect you to order online, come and wait for pick up on their plastic/wooden chair and move on immediately…

Kopitiam expect you sit there blow water chit chat with friends …

Is like watch, one for different experience and occassion.. Patek, Apple Watch, Swatch … all are time pieces but service different purpose/experience… no one says Patek will gulung cause swatch watches are cheaper and affordable …

Hypothetically,

A cup of coffee probably only rm3 cost …

Sbux selling rm10 ~ rm5 is environmental cost ,profit rm2 profit
Zus selling rm7 ~ rm0 environmental cost , profit rm4

Margin way higher for pickup coffee

If you buy sbux but takeaway, their margin is rm7 …

So depends your need to judge which is more worth it

Such is the risk of doing American franchises now. All franchises in USA are forced to support Israel no matter what due to the public and political sentiments there. And all of them need to publicly shows their intolerance to anything anti Jews. When your nation is on the other side, you risk being dragged in and boycotted. It is worse for non essential businesses with plenty of alternatives available.

The problem is Starbucks has been lowering prices at the expense of quality. The quality of their drinks have deteriorated so badly.

U compare a double choc frap in kl vs the same in singapore and u will clearly notice the taste difference. The choc quality is totally different

Malaysia starbucks quality is so so bad. Its totally different from the ones u get in sg or europe or Japan

Thats why ppl dont go to Starbucks Malaysia anymore because u can get better quality stuff at other coffee shops at around the same or lower price.

Not saying you are condemning or not. I noticed many people whenever talk about Starbucks, the potong kaki drink, very sweet etc comment coming out, while for others cafes no such issue when almost all chain coffees have similar sweet drinks which they are almost never brought up for even price comparison. So my question to you are you comparing coffee with frap? So far I drink the coffee and really doubtful drinking coffee alone (without sugar) will potong kaki.

Starbucks colour scheme looks so sad inside. Food oso sucks a**. Drinks overpriced. Starbucks reserve is pointless waste of space. Feels like going to a funeral when you walk into a Starbucks. CBTL and Zus so meriah
