I hope people will look at the title properly. It is between Avast and AVG. Why Kaspersky? Why Panda and the rest of the crowd?

AVG is proven to be less effective than Avast. If you intend to choose between the 4-As and Free AVs: AVG, AntiVir, AVS and Avast, The Best currently would go to AntiVir. CURRENTLY. NOT Definitely.

AVS is no longer popular due to the shifting of Scanning Engine (Kaspersky -> McAfee).

Avast is OK. AVG is rather inadequate. smile.gif

So, Cheers to all and no offense.

P.S. Kaspersky and NOD32 are of the reliable AVs around. BitDefender is Fine, but quite high rate for False Positives. Panda should be OK though I never tried. McAfee, Norton are disappointing.

Lets cut it out right here. If people LIKE to go for Free AV, Then SO BE IT.

If people LOVE to Spend RM40++ on a BD License, SO BE IT.

Is there a need to start a flame war? Free AV DO NOT Always SUX. If you ever bother to read comparatives that MAKES SENSE, You will realize, even your most beloved PAID AV can be LESS FUNCTIONAL than a Free one.

It is people's preference. Is there a necessity to question people's choices?

No offense and Cheers!

some people complaining Avast memory hogging, some say Kaspersky memory hogging too, i don't know how you guys determine what is memory hogging, but FYI i'm on Kasperksy Internet Security well it work perfect even i online game with it, torrenting too... the best part using KIS/KAV is... usually i plug in the thumbdrive, the anti virus will detect incoming threat, meaning, it's real time monitoring system really work thumbup.gif

Haiz. If u want satisfied answer, better create a poll before. Anyway, for me i use Avast. I did use AVG, Kap, Panda, AntiVir and many before, but not quite satisifed. Avast actually not that good since u need to be in front PC while scanning(avast not auto-remove the virus, need confirmation from user). If my PC have 50GB Ram(hahaha), i prefer using Norton 360....

*why i said Norton 360? Many of the government office and bank server use it and it prove it's ability. U can imagine what will come if government and bank use lousy Antivirus at their server....

To my surprise, Both AVG and Avast are OK for light surfers. My dad has been using AVG for his laptop for emails and stock market with occasional chat using yahoo messenger and he is safe from virus infections for over 2 years....AVG did quarantine a few i.e 3 files to date. tongue.gif

if you're a university / college student, where unknown history of thumbdrives are always being plugged in, you better get Kaspersky.
else, go for AVG or AntiVir (freeware too).

Agree with sang_karim. AVG is a better package although Avast is good at stopping the virus from getting into the system. Avira is also good.

Norton is totally crapped for home user.
-Eat memory.
-Window Startup tooks longer.
-Often popup warning(annoying)

Zzzz.. Get Avast. At least they auto update twice everyday.(for me lar)

Or else, get a cheap AV like Kapersky.

www.avast.com click on the home edition which is free

btw.. AVG didn't even get into the TOP 10 antivirus detection list.. avast got 4th in place (98% rate in detection) after kaspersky in 1st and 2nd place (i think got two version of kaspersky if i dont remember wrong) and AOL antivirus in 3rd (this AV is base on kaspersky that's why it got in 3rd ^^)..

im not bashing AVG, i used it once, it is very memory efficient (low memory usage), fast scanning (avast is very slow in scanning).. but still AVG is very highly rated by download.com.. I dont know the reason, but Avast is still the best because it offer more solid protection than AVG..

Avast is not just an antivirus, it has many layer of protection including email, p2p, im and a light-weight firewall, and it's forum support on bug and viruses is very friendly and they really will heard what suggestion that we listed and they try their best to fix or add new feature in the new version =)

Things i dont like about avast is sometimes it failed to scan compressed file format (some like rar / bak).. slow scanning very slow..

Things i like it auto virus-def update everyday.. new version avast will be downloaded automatically too with no hassle to download the whole new version from their website.. it on-access scan capabilities (if you're scanning things with other malware / spyware scanner, avast will scan it as well automatically becoz the avast scanner will scan whatever file that is being accessed by other scanner, got one virus off a spyware scanner b4 smile.gif )

and the thing i like most is.. it's FREE LOL... (just some troubling registering to get free license key) biggrin.gif

errr, even if you insert your own thumbdrive, there is no guarantee that your thumbdrive is free from virus. Unless you're using your thumbdrive within your 2 computers only or at other computers which got AV installed smile.gif

Avira popup (after updates) is damn annoying though.

How about Safe Run? I saw some where have safe run perform.. How was it?

I heard it can run the Kaspersky program applications in a secure, and if the application is in fact the virus that effect will be lost after the restart.

Does it need virus definition? From my opinion it doesn't.
