TVB drama The Queen Of News marks Charmaine Sheh's long awaited return to the Hong Kong broadcaster.

Her last TVB drama was Bet Hur, all the way back in 2017.

As expected The Queen of News, which has been touted as Hong Kong's version of Jennifer Aniston's The Morning Show, is a runaway smash hit.

Since its first episode, the drama, which also stars Kenneth Ma, Selena Lee and Samantha Ko, has been rating very well and is expected to be the highest-rated TVB drama for the second half of 2023.

Charmaine, 48, plays cut-throat news anchor Man Wai Sam and she has received lots of praise from netizens for her performance.

One netizen was so impressed by Charmaine’s acting, she said even the actress’ “eyebrows were in character".

It hasn’t been all compliments though.

Former newscaster Gloria Mak, for one, has criticised the show for being "too absurd".

According to Gloria, the scene in the drama where a make-up artiste fusses over Charmaine and helps her put on her headphones in the newsroom is far from what actually happens in reality.

Also, during the scene where Charmaine had to report a piece of breaking news, it seemed illogical that the actress showed no sense of urgency and even had the luxury of time to put on make-up.

"She [also] stood up against her boss and threatened him 30 seconds before going live, that seems too much," added Gloria.

Meanwhile, fellow news anchor Everest Yiu said: "She drives a BMW [in the show]. Which TV station's news department is so rich? I only drive a Toyota Hiace."

Netizens, however, seem to think the real-life newscasters are just making a mountain out of a molehill.

The news casting and journalism part might be a bit unrealistic but it’s a drama and people like such office politics stories. The real broadcasting and journalism is probably too boring but one thing they get right is how news are being manipulated

Errrr, it’s not really boring. In fact it’s quite fast pace compared to other TVB dramas in the past. Of course, it’s a bit unrealistic take of broadcast journalism

This drama look boring because the female leading cast are over 40.
Charmaine sheh have more fan in Mainland and Vietnam .
Plus majority of Vietnamese like older TVB star compare to those Singapore who prefer younger TVB star.

She is the main lead but the other girls are not really over 40 except Serena. It’s about newscaster and usually they are not young especially those doing prime time news.

That’s the problem with a lot of people today. They don’t even watch and give it a chance but only know how to condemn. Then they talk about good old days of HK entertainment industry as if all those series in the past were very good.

Hence even office has office politics. (Gossips, Vyving for promotion, seduce boss)

Country politics (Election Political Parties pushing their political ideology).

World politics (Country vs other country ideologies and territory).

The word politics revolves around power.

This is canto drama, tvb is the godlike canto drama producer on earth. Like it or not they are the best. If they dun talk hindi, of course they wun like bananjoe punya drama la.

It's Korean. Quite a popular drama in the early days of kdrama.

Chae Rim was quite popular at that time. The lead actor was Jang Dong-gun. Not sissy boy look like current gen Kdrama heroes.

not really, there are many series or movie that either express clearly or mocking the british ruler, and of course ccp as well before 1997. heaven burn is banned in mainland due to so called sensitive subject, i guess naturally movie or series that aim for mainland market would conduct self censorship. i wish not to talk politics in this case but just many critics said this series is more about office politics so i just make fun out of it.

you can try some taiwan series that really convey some in depth topic about society, unlike hk and mainland series which stress much on fast talking, emotional outburst or worst, love story and motherland

can today hk drama match anything from their eightys and ninetys era? i dont think so.

Heaven burn was badly received in HK when TVB showed the drama. At that time, it was one of the most lowly rated series of TVB despite the big cast and budget. It won awards but it had really bad ratings for TVB. HK people are not interested in such shows. You can call them superficial but their work life is already so stressful, they prefer entertaining shows only. That's why kdrama are so popular there nowadays.

hker used to be quite cold and unconcerned about politics, are they atill same today? i dont know unless there is some platform where we can hear from them. tvb apply the same formula as in the past stress solely entertainment, do this bring them any success?

i think the only series i finished watching this year is 法言人, more on nostalgic than anything else. some i try like 隐门，破毒强人, 一舞倾城，新42章，but really cant bring myself to finish any of it, no eyes see. charmaine is okay, she speak clearly and joyous outlook, most hk actor actress speak poor mandarin, their role is quite limited in mainland series. old hk way suit them much better.

True. Biden is far cry from the presidents we see in movies/drama.

line walker 4 and modern dynasty 2 are modern high quality canto drama. cannot compare with past decades due to different environment. Quality and acting skills the best chinese dramas though.
