Anyone here installed Linux in their PS3?
I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 last night, yet to play around with it yet. The streamyx is very slow, I have to leave it overnight for the upgrade from 7.04.
In 7.04, I've this problem "Cannot mount volume" error when try to read from DVD-R. Anyone having the same error and does anyone have any solution to it? icon_question.gif

I have not tried it myself because i have yet to buy a PS3, hehe, but here's an alternate version of Ubuntu 7.10 for the PS3. Its a custom image said to have fixed some bugs with Ubuntu on the PS3. If youre successful in installing this version please tell me cause im getting a ps3 soon and i plan to install this version. Good luck.

After seeing someone using PS3 as a server! I also felt like buying a PS3 to function as a server since the price will be droping when the 40G come into the market!

Hope Sony will open up the graphic drive for the linux so next time can play PC game on PS3 too!

the Ubuntu 7.04 are up & running now in my PS3. Will try to solve the CD/DVD ROM mounting problem to night, maybe by editing some setting in the fstab folder...

Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 for PS3 released

user posted image

Terrasoft has released a new version of its Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) operating system, which includes a new kernel version as well as the E17 desktop environment.

Terrasoft promises that YDL 6.0 will deliver "enterprise quality for the home user" as it is based on "CentOS with select Fedora 7 components". The operating system is a solid upgrade for Playstation users over version 5.0.2, which used the Linux kernel 2.6.22 rc4. Now in version 2.6.23, the software supports the Playstation 3, Apple PowerPC G4 and G5 as well as IBM's System p series JS2x, 510, 520 and 540.

Included in the package are the desktops E17 and Gnome, with an option to run KDE; additionally, YDL 6.0 comes with Gnash, Ekiga VoIP, Pidgin IM/IRC, and the Fluendo (MP3) codec installer as well as the Cell SDK v3.0. Supported audio features include audio, 802.11b Airport auto-configuration (Extreme with manual configuration), Sony's Sixaxis controller, as well as cellphone internet connections. Following the basic install, users can add the Firefox web browser, the Thunderbird email client, Open Office, gThumb and GIMP, RythmBox Music Player, games, multimedia applications, and "a suite of personal accessories," Terrasoft said.

YDL 6.0 can be installed on top of the PS3's GameOS and therefore enables PS3 users to run both YDL and the game platform. The basic toolset to partition the PS3's hard drive is already included with the PS3.

previously YDL 5.0.2 does have some problems when i installed it. Hoped this time the new YDL can support WPA wireless connection and also play divx/xvid files and mkv files without problems.. tongue.gif YDL does run smoother than others Linux for PS3 though..

10GB for GameOS is freakin' small. tongue.gif Games like Devil May Cry requires 5GB data installation to PS3 HDD before you can start playing.

Unless you're planning to use PS3 as your full-pledge PC, it's better to allocate bigger partition to GameOS, and 10GB to OtherOS. If 10GB is not enough, you can still use external hard-disk for your Linux.

ps: i'm still working on the demo list. will inform you once completed. laugh.gif

They only allow access to RSX GPU's memory at the moment. tongue.gif laugh.gif

Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 uses the graphics memory of the Playstation 3

"Compared with the previous version 6.0, the new version offers features like IBM's Cell SDK 3.1, Firefox 3.0, and OpenOffice 2.3. On the Playstation 3, the system can for the first time use the RSX GPU's 256MB of memory as a swap partition, which should noticeably enhance the distribution's performance. In addition, the new version features an extended WLAN configuration tool and supports the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's CellSs. The distribution is based on the kernel version 2.6.27, X.org 1.4.999, and xrandr 1.2.2.

Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 is currently available to the registered owners of YDL.net enhanced accounts. A DVD version is scheduled for release in two weeks' time, and a free version to download in four weeks' time."

I just succesfully installed Yello dog linux 6.1 on my ps3.

is anyone using this right now ? video playback on it is not good at all. perhaps i configure it wrongly or something , has anyone succesfully config their ydl 6.1 to play video without ANY problem ?

im using this guide http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Enab...-1-101664.shtml i did get vlc running but then not that satisfactory. the picture when fullscreen is somewhat pixelated a bit and then when i double click on the screen to make it fullscreen , it went blank and just sounds can be hear from the video.

any linux on ps3 sifu here to point to the right direction. i know there is a few here *ahem ninja *ahem comeout

No, Its something like window's dual-boot. You get to boot up either the normal XMB or linux smile.gif So Ps3 games are still playable cause you have a make a partition on your harddisk for the linux OS

I heard only PS3 Fat can install Linux. This option was removed for PS3 Slim unless you hack it.

So far the performance is okay, but after a while the OS will start to lag a bit. There is an option for you to go back to PS3/Game OS.

1 problem i've encountered is, i cannot change the screen Resolution. Dunno why. So i opted to install the linux in 720p setting in the very beginning instead. You will need to plug a USB Mouse & Keyboard in order to install it.

700mb is for Live Disc. Live Disc are meant to only install Linux OS essentials. You will need to download other programs/utilities through the update panel. However, a fully packed 3.xGB ISO/DVD is ready to install anything you select. smile.gif

Ya, only the Fat PS3 can install YDL. Slimline version has this option taken away smile.gif

A question, for PS3 users who has install YDL 6.1, is it possible to upgrade it to 6.2 without uninstalling the 6.1? Something like windows update?

Once you've formatted the PS3 HDD and Make 2 Partitions. Your Restored Backup Data will go to your PS3 Side of the HDD Partition. It will not make your linux disappear. For safety reasons, it's better to backup your data to an External ThumbDrive or HDD.

Before formatting, there is an option to Allot/Allocate 10GB of your PS3 HDD for Other OS. *Corrected*

Sorry, my bad. There isn't any option for it actually. tongue.gif Now that my PC is fixed. I no longer use linux on the PS3 so much. Either Way, 10GB is okay. (That is if you don't install too much games on the PS3) Try viewing these youtube video for guides.

honestly , i installed linux on ps3 but then im not that into linux , so it went unused for sometime until i revert back my hdd to contain only gameos , so now no more linux for me. my reason to install linux is try to get mkv file to play in linux on my ps3 , i cant get it to work properly. so i just gave up.

Yeah, i simply did it for fun. At the time my pc had a problem. So i was desperate for an internet browser and word processor. tongue.gif The Default PS3 Browser was too slow/not supporting some things/easily hang.

I would like to remind, Do BACKUP your PS3 games/settings/saves before format. Else your games/saves WILL be LOST. ph34r.gif Use any media storage you have, be it a Thumbdrive or External HDD. Better be safe than losing your hard-earned game progress.

Slim PS3 can no longer support LINUX installation already bro. If you really want to maximize your PS3, get the Fat version.

wokeh...so so so so finally i'd installed YDL 6.1 onto my 2nd PS3 as for the 1st one had failed me big time (coz det time i dun even had a LCD monitor koh3)

diz 2nd attemp ekceli not second but several attemp, first install i'd failed to input display setup so the installer assign it to default display which i'd try using some guru's guide by googling & corrupted da boot seq dem...

da second install i'd miss out to create user acct which i don't know why i skip those & end up cannot login since i didn't create any acct while prompted previously....end up re installing for the 3rd times...sigh

on the 3rd time while formating i notice my HDD space getting smaller due to the 2 time quick format so i begin da full format mode dats take 4hours OMG...

yesterday i'd started around 6pm & after all wrong duin including successfully instal for the 3rd & last time doned including update at 7am on the next morning which was today...

so yes i'm a total noob det can't be save lol...

for all the time i've been duin i'd notive one things i can say most of the wut they say YDL guru's giving some code in helping noob was a total crap (<for noob)...once i'd remember they ask to install wut pigot i dun even know juz to reinstalling pigent (< prolly misspelled) giving some code to be input on terminal command & u guys know wut thank god i didn't do it...

i'd been thinking why was YDL so stupid giving a hard time to install such new version of program that require its user to do some command coding...during some tour within the menus i'd come accross with system update i'd come to think would diz be it? well in doubt i initiate updating services & you know wut? i'd found out the YDL system update not only upgraded the system but including all program that outdated...WOW when everything was done it make me forgot i'm enjoying the OS quite a while already & i'd late to mandi goes to work diz morning koh3...

so for anyone who'd a phat PS3 wish or still hessite to install YDL linux i say juz go on with it, its was really amazing for someone like me who didn't hav a desktop at home...

okey...while i'm posting this i'm currently using thru my YDL on PS3 system, well YDL LINUX to be precises was not a perfect OS on these hardware (PS3) but to whom may it concern as da likes of me i'm pretty pleased with it.

as for swithing onto PS3 XMB from YDL OS go to YDL Start Menu > Aplication > Boot Game OS (you'll switched to PS3 XMB OS in no time thumbup.gif )

on the YDL 6.1 there're several bugs issue but most of it will be fix after the system update, it take around 30 minutes to fully DL the total package that comes from the 6.1 release installer...

bear in mind that the YDL 6.1 had 2 ver. one is for new PS3 system that fix the boot screen issue & for the old PS3 system year < 2007.

as for me had instaled here were using the new ver. YDL for new PS3 system (i believe da last system for other OS)

for someone lazy out there here's da link where you'll found the regional mirror (most of it hosted by university server n hell it fast)

http://us.fixstars.com/support/downloads/

please note while you're browsing on the hosted server find the one ISO file mention (yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20090201_NEW_PS3.iso)

when you had done DLing it burn it by using your burning software onto DVD...

INSTALLATION GUIDELINE
Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 operating system for SONY's PlayStation 3, Apple PowerPC G4/G5, IBM Power Systems and YDL PowerStation was officially released by Fixstars on November 19th, 2008. Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 (codename Pyxis) is an operating system for the PPC64 architecture and it is based on the CentOS Linux distribution, a RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) derivative. We decided to create the following tutorial for people who want to install a Linux distribution on their PlayStation 3 gaming consoles. But, before you jump to the installation of this Linux-based OS, please read the warning information (in red) below and all editor's notes throughout the entire tutorial.
Also, take a look at the screenshots (at the end of the article) to see how it looks.

What does Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 offer?

· Linux Kernel 2.6.27
· X.Org server 1.4.999 with xrandr 1.2.2
· Enlightenment E17 desktop environment
· Mozilla Firefox 3.0
· GNOME 2.16.2 components
· OpenOffice.org 2.3 (version 3.0 available for YDL.net users)
· Improved Wireless network
· YDL.net GUI (private software repository)
· Bluetooth support for PS3's SIXAXIS controller
· ps3vram: temporary file storage or SWAP using video RAM of Playstation 3
· GCC 4.1.2
· Cell SDK 3.1

WARNING: Be aware that if you continue, all the saved games, game data, bought games, downloaded demos, PlayStation Home settings/installation and any data (music, movies, pictures) saved on the hard drive of the PlayStation 3 will be permanently ERASED. However, the PlayStation 3 settings will NOT be lost. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you back up immediately any saves of your games, hard drive movies, pictures, music or PlayStation Home data on a removable HDD device or USB stick! The bought games or downloaded demos can not be copied, but you will be able to re-download without the need to buy them again, as they are stored on your PlayStation Network account.

Editor's note: Please read the above warning very carefully before you proceed with the installation of Yellow Dog Linux. Also, please read the following guide very, very carefully, as we don't want to damage your PS3 machine. You should also know that the GNOME desktop environment included in Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 is very old compared to the one found in Linux distributions such as Fedora 10 or Ubuntu 8.10, and if you are familiar with a new GNOME desktop, then you will definitely miss a lot of its features. It appears that Fixstars did not replace the GNOME environment components from version 6.0 of Yellow Dog Linux, created by Terra Soft back in 2007. Even so, you will still enjoy a modern and eye-candy desktop, thanks to the Enlightenment environment.

What do I need to get started?

· Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 DVD ISO images (free download, just click the link)
· PlayStation 3 console (any model) with the latest firmware: 2.60
· USB Keyboard and Mouse

Update 03222009: Fixstar released a new build of the ISO image for Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 on February 16th 2009, which brings a patch for a boot issue on the newer PlayStation 3 models. This includes the 80GB PS3 (Model Number 98015 and later) and the 160GB PS3 (Model Number 900006 and later). Please download the NEW ISO if you are installing Yellow Dog Linux on a newer PS3 model and you're unable to boot into the system!

Part 1 – Prepare the PlayStation 3

Editor's note: If your hard drive was previously formatted for OtherOS, please skip step 1 and ignore the above warning, as you will not lose anything (except the existing OtherOS installation, of course).

Step 1 – Format the PlayStation 3 hard drive

In the XMB (PS3 interface) go to Settings -> System Settings -> Format Utility and select the "Format Hard Disk" option. Select YES when you will be asked if you want to format the hard disk and follow the steps below:

· Select "Custom" when you will be asked for a partition setting for the hard disk.
· Select the "Allot 10GB to the OtherOS" option.
· Select the "Quick Format" option.
· Select YES when asked if you want to format the hard drive.

Wait a few seconds while the format operation is in process. When it finishes, you will see a confirmation message: "Format completed. Press the X button to restart the system." The PS3 will be restarted.

Editor's note: At this point, you will notice that all the data has been erased (music, videos, pictures, saved games, game demos, PlayStation Home installation and settings, bought games). Also, the Information Board will appear (if you have set it to not be displayed), giving you the impression that all the settings have been removed, but don't worry because all your settings are intact!

Step 2 – Install OtherOS boot loader

Insert the Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 DVD into the Blu-Ray player of the PlayStation 3 and go to Settings -> System Settings -> Install OtherOS. The PS3 will scan for the otheros.bld file and when it will find it you can press the "Start" button on the screen to perform the installation. Wait a few seconds. When it finishes, a confirmation message and some information about how to switch to the OtherOS (see the next step) will be displayed.

Step 3 – Switch to OtherOS

In order to start the Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 installation, you need to reboot the PlayStation 3 and boot into the OtherOS. Therefore, go to Settings -> System Settings -> Default System, press the X button and select the "OtherOS" entry. Select YES when asked if you want to leave the PS3 system and start the OtherOS.

Editor's note: At this point the PS3 will reboot, a black screen will appear for about 10 seconds, and then you will see two penguins and some text.

At the end of the boot process you will see "kboot:". For different HD TVs you can type one of the following commands:

install_ps3_1080p (Full HD)
install_ps3_1080i
install_ps3_720p
install_ps3_480i

...and hit Enter to start the installation process.

If you know the maximum resolution of your HD TV, then we recommend to type one of the above commands, but if you are uncertain about your TV's resolution, just hit Enter at the kboot prompt and Yellow Dog Linux will automatically find and adjust the resolution for your TV.

To return to the XMB (PS3 operating system) from the kboot prompt, in case you don't want to continue with the installation process of Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 or for any other reasons, just type:

ps3-boot-game-os

...and hit Enter.

Part 2 – Installing Yellow Dog Linux 6.1

Editor's note: Once you hit Enter at the kboot prompt or typed one of the above installation commands, after a few seconds, the Anaconda (Red Hat installer) will appear.

The following will be a regular Fedora/Red Hat installation process:

· Click the "Next" button on the Welcome screen and you will be asked to select your language for the installation process.
· Choose your keyboard layout and hit the "Next" button.
· If you formatted your hard drive, you will see a message that the partition table is unreadable and in order to create new partitions it must be initialized. Click "Yes."
· Select the "Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout" option (default) and click "Next."
· Click "Yes" when asked if you are sure that you want to remove all Linux partitions on the /dev/ps3da drive.
· Click "Yes" when asked if it is OK to turn SWAP immediately, because the PlayStation 3 memory is low.
· On the network configuration screen, you will notice two entries: eth0 (LAN ethernet connection) and wlan0 (Wireless network connection). Set up your network connections as follows:

For DHCP (dynamic IP) users without wireless:

· Leave the eth0 entry as it is.
· Uncheck the wlan0 entry.

For DHCP (dynamic IP) users with wireless:

· Leave the eth0 entry as it is.
· Select the wlan0 entry and click on the "Edit" button. Uncheck the "Enable IPv6 support" option and enter your ESSID and Encryption Key for the wireless network you want to connect to. Click "OK" when you are done.

For non-DHCP (static IP) users without wireless:

· Select the eth0 entry and click on the "Edit" button. Select the "Manual configuration" option under the "Enable IPv4 support" and input the IP address and netmask from your provider. Also, uncheck the "Enable IPv6 support" option. Click "OK" to return to the main window. Enter a name for the computer (it can be anything you want, e.g. softpedia-ps3), the Gateway and DNS information from your provider.
· Uncheck the wlan0 entry.

For non-DHCP (static IP) users with wireless:

· Select the eth0 entry and click on the "Edit" button. Uncheck the "Enable IPv6 support" option and input the IP address and netmask from your provider. Click "OK" to return to the main window and enter the gateway and DNS information from your provider.
· Select the wlan0 entry and click on the "Edit" button. Uncheck the "Enable IPv6 support" option and enter your ESSID and Encryption Key for the wireless network you want to connect to. Click "OK" when you are done.

· Click "Next" when you're done with the network configuration.
· Choose your location. Click "Next."
· Input a root (system administrator) password. Click "Next."
· On the software configuration screen you can add or remove applications by selecting the "Customize now" option. However, this is recommended for advanced users. Regular users should just click on the "Next" button to continue with the installation process.
· Click on the "Next" button to begin the installation process of Yellow Dog Linux 6.1.

Editor's note: At this point, the installer will check for dependencies of selected packages, format the hard drive, create partitions and install the selected packages. For us, this part of the installation process took exactly 25 minutes. Our installation had 774 packages! < mine got 800 packages

When the installation is over, you will see the confirmation screen. Click on the "Reboot" button and, after a few seconds, the Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 will be automatically removed.

WARNING: Remove the DVD disk from the PlayStation 3 and wait for Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 to start. If you do not remove the disk, it will be pulled back in and the installation process will start again!

Part 3 – Final steps and the screenshot tour!

When the Yellow Dog Linux will start, you will notice two YDL icons, representing the two cores of the CELL processor, followed by six Fixstars logos, representing the 6 available SPEs (Synergistic Processing Elements) of the CELL processor.

In a few seconds you will see the customized Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 boot splash. When the boot process is over, you will be prompted by a first-boot configuration process. Please follow the instructions below:

· Click "Forward" on the Welcome screen.
· Accept the license agreement and click on the "Forward" button.
· Select the trusted services for the Firewall or disable it if the PS3 is connected in a network environment with a powerful firewall. Click "Yes" when asked if you want to override the firewall configuration.
· Leave the Kdump option unchecked and click "Forward."
· Input your YDL.net account information, if you have one, or click "Forward" to continue.
· Set up the date and time. Click "Forward."
· Create a regular user for the system. Click "Forward" when you're done.
· Test the sound card of the PlayStation 3.
· Click on the "Finish" button.

Editor's note: At this point, you will arrive at the login screen. Input the username and password that you've just created and hit Enter to log in.

Conclusions:

The Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 performs very well, and it is much faster than the last Linux distribution (Ubuntu 7.10) we've installed on our PlayStation 3 console, here at the Softpedia Labs. It boots in about 40-45 seconds, and the applications start much faster. For example, it takes approximatelly 3-4 seconds for Firefox to start. For your viewing pleasure, we've compiled a nice screenshot tour of Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 on the PlayStation 3 gaming console. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT
So here come the important part of the YDL which most NOOB like me don't even know how da YDL OS really works.
When you've done installing the YDL 6.1 while on the desktop click the Start Menu (Blue rounded sphere got dog in there, no worries it ain't gonna bite you)
Go to: Application > System Tools > Software Updater
Where there it will update all your outdated software & system file by fixing most of pre install ISO, like numerical keyboard (side) not properly assign & PIDGIN (a p that compile all IM software like AIM, YM or ICQ in one program really important for me) that doesn't connect to the YM server due outdated ver.
The update takes around 30 minutes on my side.
When all its done I believe i couldn't hold you enimure to explore the secondary OS on your PlayStation3 System...oh yaa one more thing be proud to be a phat PS3 owners we had 2 OS to enjoy & explore...

Cheers!!!

well ekceli it got while on your first install session at kboot > install_ps3_480i < refer to your tv monitor lowest resolution...by det mean you can minimize ha shriked font.

i'd try out some terminal coding but totally faile & da outcome i can't even boot da GUI screen... doh.gif end up like my sigh story above sweat.gif

if you're talking about menus wording & font i just can only say its da same like my bosses new VAIO FW series juz bought da font & everything withing goes sooooooooo small due to 1080p HD high resolution...everything shrinked... shocking.gif rclxub.gif

wireless kb & mouse have usb dongle/receivers right ?

ps3 will treat them as usb keyboard/mouse so no issues there yawn.gif

unless wireless bluetooth kb/m, then you;ll need another driver/ bt profile etc

Is there anyway to change the resolution? Previously I've selected 1280x720 because my TV is HD READY only.

I'll be receiving my 40" Bravia V & I was wondering how to configure the display to output at 1920x1080.

TOPIC: Configuring YDL 5.0 for the chosen PS3 video mode.

Introduction
The PS3 is both a game console and a computer. Game consoles traditionally output to TV screens, computers traditionally output to computer monitors. TV screens and computer monitors have very little in common. The PS3 can output to both, and can also output to High-Definition (HD) TV screens. Since this involves several completely different sets of standards, things can get complex. This HOWTO will show you how to make your selected PS3 video mode permenant.

Boot configuration
Once you have determined the video mode you find best for your monitor or television, you may make the change more permanent by editing your /etc/kboot.conf file, adding a configuration with the video argument you would like. For example, the kboot.conf file generated by the Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 installer provides four different modes:

# kboot.conf generated by anaconda
default=ydl
timeout=10
root=/dev/sda1
ydl='/dev/sda1:/vmlinux-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3
  initrd=/dev/sda1:/initrd-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3.img
  root=/dev/sda2 init=/sbin/init video=ps3fb:mode:3 rhgb'

ydl480i='/dev/sda1:/vmlinux-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3
  initrd=/dev/sda1:/initrd-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3.img
  root=/dev/sda2 init=/sbin/init video=ps3fb:mode:1 rhgb'

ydl1080i='/dev/sda1:/vmlinux-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3
  initrd=/dev/sda1:/initrd-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3.img
  root=/dev/sda2 init=/sbin/init video=ps3fb:mode:4 rhgb'

ydltext='/dev/sda1:/vmlinux-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3
  initrd=/dev/sda1:/initrd-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3.img
  root=/dev/sda2 init=/sbin/init 3'

The above lines DO NOT WRAP.
If none of these meet your needs, you may copy one of these lines, replace the label and edit the video=ps3fb:mode:# number. For example, to make a new configuration named myconfig that will start with mode 5:1080p:

myconfig='/dev/sda1:/vmlinux-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3
  initrd=/dev/sda1:/initrd-2.6.16-20061110.ydl.1ps3.img
  root=/dev/sda2 init=/sbin/init video=ps3fb:mode:5 rhgb'

The above lines DO NOT WRAP.
If you wish to make the the default boot, change the default=ydl line to read:

    default=myconfig

When you reboot, it will use this video mode as the default.

Graphical mode configuration
You will also need to modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf to make sure that the Linux graphic mode works fine. Look for the Screen section and modify it to look like this:

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "Screen0"
  Device    "Card0"
  Monitor    "Monitor0"
  DefaultDepth    24
  DefaultFbBPP    32
  SubSection "Display"
  Depth    8
  FbBPP    32
  Modes    "1920x1200" "1920x1080" "1280x1024" "1280x768" "1280x720" "720x576" "720x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
  Depth    16
  FbBPP    32
  Modes    "1920x1200" "1920x1080" "1280x1024" "1280x768" "1280x720" "720x576" "720x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
  Depth    24
  FbBPP    32
  Modes    "1920x1200" "1920x1080" "1280x1024" "1280x768" "1280x720" "720x576" "720x480"
  EndSubSection
EndSection

This relies on the fact that Xorg will ignore any invalid screen resolutions, and there will only be one valid screen resolution at a time on the PS3. Note that this does include the WXGA mode, and while WXGA is a set of non standard resolutions, 1280x768 is the resolution currently supported by the PS3.
