Is Asus routers / mesh from China Taobao suitable for use in Malaysia? Any major difference in firmware, wifi channels etc?

Able to "reconfigure" to international / MY version?

Major differences in firmware such as chinese bloat like QQ Game Turbo Booster
Reduced transmit power and also reduced channels maybe

Most likely unable to change regions due to FCC requirements from the US
Also, UI is only in Chinese

Custom Firmware like AsusWRT-Merlin will not help
Unsure about others like DD-WRT

Also seems like they are unable to mesh with other region routers

Either way, always a bad idea to import wireless routers

And also there might be lesser 5Ghz channels for China region router due to the local policy restriction.

Iirc RMerlin (the firmware guy) mentioned before that china region is baked into the chipset. ie, the firmware simply relays whatever country exposed by the radio chipset to the available region list.

Since the region is hardwired on hardware, there won't be any software hack to do it nor changing firmware would help either.

Not just the firmware

As the China model comes with lower Wi-Fi transmit power limit, it's using lower grade Wi-Fi power amplifier with worst performance than International model

That's why they are cheaper
