I read somewhere that NS facing house is not for everyone. It's supposed to be the position for the stronk ones, and if you're not stronk enough you will be overwhelmed.

Buying a New House: There's an Art to South-facing Houses in Feng Shui!

Feng Shui of South-facing Houses—Feng Shui Perspective

In Chinese Feng Shui, it's believed that everything originates from Qi, and Tai Chi represents Qi. Qi accumulates to form the two poles, which then generate the three elements and five phases. Earth obtains from Qi, water obtains from Qi, humans obtain from Qi, and Qi responds and corresponds; everything derives from Qi.

Because of this belief, it's important to build houses in places with vital energy, as vitality leads to health and longevity. Therefore, having houses facing north and backing south follows the natural flow of Qi. South-facing houses conform to the laws of nature, can acquire the essence of mountains and rivers, absorb the essence of the sun and moon, nurture the body, and cultivate sentiment.

Feng Shui Analysis of South-facing House Layout

South-facing houses are designed not only for better lighting but also to avoid cold winds. Considering China's terrain, the northwest is high while the southeast is low. The north is yin, and the south is yang and represents fire and brightness. There's an ancient saying: "Rule while facing south." According to traditional Chinese beliefs, south-facing buildings are beneficial for health and longevity.

China has a temperate continental monsoon climate. In winter, influenced by the cold air from Siberia in the north, the Earth's rotation causes the cold air to deflect, resulting in northeast and northwest winds. In summer, influenced by warm and moist air currents from the southeastern Pacific Ocean and southwestern Indian Ocean.

Feng Shui emphasizes the gathering of wind and Qi. South-facing houses are in harmony with the climatic patterns of China. In winter, these houses are shielded from the cold air, keeping the interior warm; in summer, they face southeast or southwest winds, ensuring good airflow and a cooler environment. Other orientations may directly face cold winds, leading to ailments like headaches and rheumatism.

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. South-facing houses receive sunlight for a longer duration during the day. With ample light, the interior is bright, dispersing negative energy, and leaving no place for evil spirits. With longer moonlight exposure, one can sunbathe in front of the house in winter to drive away cold. Sunlight contains UV rays that can kill bacteria, reduce the occurrence of diseases, and supplement calcium when sunbathing regularly, benefiting health.

In summary, the principle of facing south reflects a correct understanding of natural phenomena, conforms to the laws of nature, acquires the essence of mountains and rivers, absorbs the brilliance of the sun and moon, nurtures the body, cultivates sentiment, and fosters talents.

Choosing the Feng Shui Layout of North-facing Houses

Why should residences face south?
Facing north and backing south is one of the traditional architectural principles of Feng Shui theory. In Yi Jing studies, the south is lush with vegetation and abundant yang energy, making it the supreme direction.

Ancient Chinese believed that north symbolized yin while south symbolized yang, and a good Feng Shui location should have a balance of yin and yang. As early as in primitive society, ancient Chinese built villages and houses facing north and backing south. Most ancient houses discovered by modern archaeology have their main entrances facing south.

Even today, having houses face south is still the preferred choice for modern homebuyers.

There are three main reasons for choosing houses facing north and backing south:

Good lighting. According to the "Zhai Jing," windows facing south, southeast, or southwest have better lighting. Residences facing north and backing south can fully utilize sunlight, maintaining warmth in winter and coolness in summer.

Excellent ventilation. Facing south allows for better air circulation in residences.

Shelter from northern winds. Facing south not only ensures good lighting and ventilation but also provides protection from northern winds. China has a monsoon climate, with continuous cold air from Siberia in winter and cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean in summer, resulting in changing wind directions throughout the year.
\
To address this, the Chinese have a deep understanding and categorization of winds into yang and yin. "Di Xue Zhi Zheng" states: "Flat and sunny areas are not afraid of wind, but there is a distinction between yin and yang winds. Warm winds and mild winds come from the east or south, which is called yang wind, and there is no harm in that. Winds from the west or north are cool winds and cold winds, known as yin winds, and it is advisable to have barriers nearby to block them; otherwise, the wind will cause bone-chilling cold." This emphasizes the need to avoid the invasion of northwest winds.

Generally, residences facing northeast or southwest are not ideal choices for homebuyers because besides poor lighting conditions, they are also prone to absorbing damp substances from the air, which is detrimental to human health.

In reality, it's not always possible to find south-facing orientations for houses due to various constraints in urban development and transportation. However, many excellent architects continuously design more ideal residential spaces for us, effectively addressing the issue of unfavorable house orientations to meet our desires for healthy living.

South-West (西南)
North-West (西北)

I found that these two directions are not ideal for a house. The house becomes very hot.

South-East (東南)
North-East (東北)

These two directions are good for a house.

The best directions are South or North.

The worst direction is West.
