Industry insiders say that Musang King grown in Vietnam has lower quality than in Malaysia, and the flesh can be cloying for some customers. Thailand’s Monthong and Vietnam’s Ri 6 varieties therefore are more preferred.

Dang Manh Khuong, a trader in the southern city of Can Tho, said that Musang King fails to compete with other varieties in terms of price and productivity and therefore its prices have plunged.

Bui Van Cuong, who has been studying durian varieties for 20 years, said that Musang King trees can easily fail to produce high quality fruits if farmers lack the necessary techniques.

Planting a single durian cultivar in an orchard is just asking for problems. Then there's the soil, weather, terrain, age of tree, and nutrient levels (macro and micro...the latter is often ignored or forgotten).

My own casual observations (which may or may not have any bearing on the fruit quality):
Fruits from lower branches can have flesh that is more "watery". The best-tasting ones with a good balance of flesh density and creaminess come from branches in the middle of the tree, and the highest branches can produce the "driest" fruits with the best shelf-life, but not necessarily the best texture and flavor.
Moths and other insect pollinators prefer flowers on the lower branches; bats tend to flit around the middle branches.

Stick to rice planting perhaps.😁
