Hi, I'm still new with OSX and have never install OSX software. I have an iMac, can anybody teach me how can I install to other hardisk (external hardisk). I have a firewire external hardisk. Coz i'm going to buy Leopard and was thinking to keep my Tiger before intstalling Leopard into my internal hardisk. Thank.

Hmmm..I have no idea about that. But you can try exchanging the internal harddisk and then do the installation.
Try to search in Google of how to disassemble the iMac. Do it at your own risk.
Or wait for expert answers.

QUOTE(Asparagine @ Oct 24 2007, 10:00 AM) hi, i dun think u can install OS on ur external hard disk I haven't try it externally. So, if we goes into the Mac OS X installation mode, can the external hard disk can be detacted in the Disk Utility?

You can actually.
Basically, clone your current internal hard disk into your external drive (firewire) using any good backup software like SuperDuper! or something. After that's done, test that you can boot OS X off the external before wiping out your internal HDD to install Tiger. If all goes well, you're fine and good.
If you want to do the internal HDD exchange, bear in mind it's not easy to DIY, and if you scratch any part inside your mac while exchanging the HDD, you may void your warranty. If you don't want to void your warranty and don't trust yourself to do a flawless, scratch-free job, take it to any Authorized Service Center like VR Technology and get the techs to do it for you. Won't void warranty, but costs RM100 install fee. Then, take back your original internal HD, put it into an external FW casing and boot off it.

You should be able to see your disks in Disk Utility. However, you can install OS X on the external FW disk if the boot partition scheme for that disk is the correct one for your mac.
For Intel macs - GPT (GUID Partition Table) For PPC macs - APT (Apple Partition Table)
Use Disk Utility to format them appropriately (and use HFS+ Journaled too). The partition table bit is under "Advanced" in Disk Utility if I remember correctly.
Disk Utility will let you know if your external disk allows OS X to be installed on it or not. If it refuses to let you install on it, reformat using the appropriate partition table for your disk (see above) and try again.
Have not tried/do not know anyone who's done it on USB disks, so can't help you if your external is USB.
Also, you can use Disk Utility to restore your internal OS X to external and it'll basically clone your OS X installation onto the external drive, and then you can install Leopard onto the Internal.

Follow on djspinnet's advice n you'll be able to boot yr whole hdd externally even with usb. If you still want Windows then use Parellels, as I have not tried boot camp with an external drive.
The important thing is to format the partition to GUID if Intel Mac, during cloning. Also note that u can boot via usb, there are very few, if none, sata enclosure with firewire in town. You wil have to buy Lacie's but warranty expires once u remove the hdd from enclosure or import them yrself.
For the physical installation, again take djspinnet's advice n send it to an authorised reseller ie machines becos 1)they know how to do it 2)the hdd swap record is updated 3)u may not have the tools
Hope this helps and it's real easy, Good Luck!

just caught this part QUOTE snip* authorised reseller ie machines *snip sorry, the technician needs to be certified, not the company being authorised. Its not the same thing, and if you like, we can start a separate thread about this some other time. to be safe, only send your Macs for warranty service to the people on this list Apple Asia SupportThis post has been edited by xaw5126: Oct 25 2007, 11:16 AM

Lols, Windows, Mac and Linux all can install on external HDD all you need is to set the boot and then partition. There are a few guides out there on the Internet which you can search with 'Google".
