Hey guys.

Im thinkin of changing card here. Does a single 3870 pawn my 8800 GTS?
Forget benchmark. We're talking bout the real gaming satisfaction here.  rclxms.gif

Yes it does. Go here to start checking it out.

Additional news...RV635 is going to be released with DisplayPort. Here is the news. Supposedly to be released for R700 and RS780...oh well...

that would be interesting rclxms.gif G100 vs R780 icon_idea.gif

There's no G100. It's either D9M (mainstream), D9P (performance) or D9E (enthusiast). There's no R780 as well. It is RS780...but then again, the roadmap may change and it could be R780.

Straying too much from topic again...

Wow...you guys Croosfire like mad. I only buy one card at a time. When the game demands more graphics, I'll buy another card to pair it up...Buying 2 cards at a time...don't seem like a viable option to me. Better to get one greater performance card now, but keep in mind that it can be extended later through Croosfire/SLI. Thus, HD3850 is not an option for me.

QUOTE(kingmax @ Dec 13 2007, 01:31 PM)
If there is no much difference GDDR3 512MB and GDDR4 512MB maybe going for GDDR3 256MB

I was asking after I saw HD 3850 with GDDR4 512MB and same price as now. http://en.expreview.com/?p=100

So what about GDDR3 256MB vs GDDR3 512MB  ? Sorry for newbie question , actually what is the major difference with lower memory ? real example ?
*
GDDR3 vs GDDR4
1) 7.2 vs 11.2 GBps per chip max data speed
2) 1.8 vs 2.8 GBps per pin max data rate
3) 1.8 vs 1.5 v minimum power consumption which results in a 20-25% energy savings
4) 2.1 vs 1.9 v maximum power for overclocking
5) 4 vs 8 bit burst length which allows more memory bandwidth and lower latency
6) no DBI vs DBI: Data Bus Inversion - it takes more energy to transfer 0s than 1s. When there are a lot of 0s to move, it will send them as 1s instead and then use DBI to signal that all those 1s needed to be flipped back to 0s. This is a power saving feature.
7) Three point voltage control via video card driver for fine tuning and overclocking

As a comparison, the X1900xt uses GDDR3 at 1.45GHz while the X1950xtx uses GDDR4 at 2GHz. This difference helps the the X1950xtx get 64GBps memory bandwidth over the 46.4GBps of the X1900xt. As for the future, GDDR5 is expected in 2008 and will use 1.2-1.5v. The next GDDR interation might be in 2010 and use 1.2v max.

Source: Computer Power User

TomsHardware (reviews of 8800GT, 8800GTS and HD38x0) mentioned that the rated speed for GDDR3 is 1000MHz while GDDR4 is 1200MHz. Hence, GDDR4 can be overclocked much further than GDDR3. That will make a lot of difference.

then the difference between DDR3 2000MHz and DDR4 1100MHz ... which is better?

get this from sapphire 3870... not sure where i found already.

higher MHz is better? or better DDR version better?
*
See those bold parts? Let me explain something for you. People list down things as they want...even those price list that you see.

GDDR3 (not DDR3 - G stand for Graphics) has a rated speed of 1000MHz. At Double Data Rate, it is rated at 2000MHz.

GDDR4 (also not DDR4) has a rated speed of 1200MHz. At Double Data Rate, it is rated at 2400MHz.

So what you read is wrong...typo or marketing ploy. GDDR3 will always be at 1000MHz (2000 DDR) or less (JEDEC Standards and not OC types) and GDDR4 will always be at 1200MHz (2400 DDR) or less (JEDEC Standards and not OC types).

bro, so what's the difference between DDR3 and GDDR3 ?? same same?

Not the same. You can refer to Wikipedia or Anandtech. The technology of DDR3 is somewhere between GDDR3 and GDDR4.

DDR3 has better specs than GDDR3. Compare the specs.

Ok, it might be different but i dont think DDR3 is the correct term used for Graphics Memory right? Just trying to enquire a confusion here that i have. I mean, many pricelist/suppliers out there are stating eg. HD3870 DDR3 ... but it was suppose to be GDDR3 right? This is because, i always have an thinking that there is no such thing as DDR3 for GC because the correct term that should be used was GDDR3 and to prevent confusion for some buyers, they just renamed it to DDR3 as it is similar to the RAMS. Correct me if i am wrong though..
*
Yes you are right. DDR3 is for CPU. GDDR3 is for graphics as I pointed out earlier that the G stands for Graphics. DDR3 has specifications better than GDDR3. JEDEC had wanted to incorporate GDDR4 specs into DDR3 but, well, as you know, GDDR and DDR has different...erm, let's call it architecture...different architecture.

Which? The DDR3 vs GDDR3 part? I've explained that.

R680? I don't have much info. I post it up so that someone that is better informed could start a new thread on it. You could look around the web for lots regarding R680. Even the "leaked" pictures are available.

Indeed it is. 2 cores on a single PCB. I don't know how they Crossfire or whatever that they are doing though. The scalability of performance would probably be similar to two HD3870 running in Crossfire...but I wouldn't rely on that.

2 cards integrate 2 one just like the 7950GX2 which was a big failure? laugh.gif sweat.gif
*
7950GX2 has 2 cores on 2 PCBs being connected through SLI and being sold as a single card. R680 has 2 cores on 1 PCB being connected through some kind of Crossfire. But that's not confirmed yet...

any more info on that sapphire card? tempting... might wanna ditch my 3850 for a 3870... wise decision or not?

Wow...you should have bought HD3870 in the first place. Anyway, not wise decision. If you are going to ditch your HD3850, wait for R680 in January/February...most likely will be introduced at CES.

is it any PSU under rm250 that can power up hd3870?
*
Are you sure you want to risk your motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD and DVDx with a normal PSU? Well, if you are not an enthusiast, CM Real Power 450W or CM Extreme Power 550W (both RM250 at PC-Zone) may be enough. Or you can look up the garage sales.

Supposedly USD15 more than the vanilla HD3870. In Malaysia, expect it to go RM100+ more. But don't expect it to be available in the market anytime soon.

Why not take the 750W? At least you'll know that you are on the safe side, and it may prolong your PSU by not straining its workload. It is also future-proof for any upgrades and can accomodate all the case modding that you may fancy.
