Can anyone answer my doubt for this Asus Eee ?
I just couldn't understand what this Eee is for since the harddisk is just at 8GB maximum.
Price is tempting to me , but buying just for wireless surfing seems a little waste to me.
*
It's not harddisk... it's flash memory.

Eeepc is basically a new segment altogether.

Officially, it's for the education market and the an alternative to the UMPC and MID devices thats about to be launch

In street talk, its basically targeted towards the in between the "buy-a-Kaiser-and-squint-to-see-the-damn-webpage", "the-STUFF-reader-who-want-but-cannot-afford-an-UMPC and the "pay-peanut-get-rubbish-but-complain-QC-no-good" crowd.

Asus could've done it cheaper but didn't. So personally, I do think it's a much better buy than those sub RM2K notebooks (which seems superficially better value)

Depends on what you mean by better value lor... better quality or more things. a Mini Cooper or a TATA truck.

The trouble with Malaysians are that they are taking the Pengguna Bijak campaign to the ridiculous end, wanting cheap prices but also demanding the best of specs.

Hell yeah.. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

Enough lar... so powerful for what. That defeats the whole purpose of the Eeepc anyway. If want powerful, top up a couple hundred and buy a celeron-m notebook instead lor.

how ur XP boot up time? fast?

I tried mine with fully update all patches...it took about more than one minutes complete the boot up doh.gif

(now switch it back to xandros)
*
You can just install it ler.. have to tweak. Mine boots pretty quick.. 30sec thereabout.
Installation size nlite'd including a bunch of apps --> 1.13gb which means got more space to add more crap compared with the default xandros

First of all.. for some unknown reasons... the prices are bloody expensive in KL. Then of course you can't compare official price stuff vs fall of lorry stuffs.

computers, pda and handphones got 10% tax if i am not mistaken, maybe that's why it is more expensive that overseas.
*
no wor....laptops, mobos, vga cards etc are usually the same price compared to taiwan (where i'm at). In fact, some things are even cheaper than in KL. But eeepc are unnecessarily expensive lor.

47 secs ok wat...

From cold boot (pressing the on button) until the first forum.lowyat.net loads up also takes about the same time.

My desktop rig takes far longer *sigh*. Too much rubbish

ok..i've try nLite, but it failed me installation error at .sif file(press F3 to exit,ya, even I din't use unattended or remove winnt.sif also fail..weird) sweat.gif

so I proceed normal installation as wat splua333 mentioned.

my eee XP boot up time(XP oridinary installation, with full 89 windows updates, IE7), about 25-26 seconds at auto logon(u'll c the brow line there), then 35-36 seconds at XP desktop ready. using StyleXP theme deco.

One very big different I notice, after fresh installation without load in any ASUS all software drivers, XP loading is fast.
Oh yah, another thing, anyone of you manage get the 0804(if not mistaken) BIOS via Asus Update utility? I ran it, it did show up 08 bios available to download. Official stable version?
*
I didn't update bios...didn't even check which version is mine but it's not running 900mhz lor which is also ok cos I'm more concerned about battery life rather than anything.

Tonight I'll check the boot time again. Probably need to remove some startups.

anyone know what is the best way to find out the eeepc with or without mini-PCI, without open the back cover?
*
Only the 7A serial numbers and the 8gb has it but of course, the mini pci-e is already occupied by the 8gb flash module on the 8GB model.

but last time when i use open office to open a word file, got a bit different ... and i change nicely and save, go back home open again still got different... expecially those doc with format 1....

and 8gb model mini pci-e already occupied by the 8gb flash module?? the inside dont hv another 8gb or 4gb lo...??
*
Dunno lor... for me Openoffice is ok so far but of course I don't use Eeepc for work. It's more like a roadside stall+toilet+surfing in bed device for me.

Yes for the 8gb. There's no onboard flash.
