So Leopard is just around the corner, and I'm finally getting my iMac. But the plan is to get the higher range 20 inch which costs RM5799 and upgrade the lowly 1gb of ram to the maximum of 4gb.
Now, IF I customize under Apple, after conversion it should costs around Rm8.9k which is totally unreasonable to me. I mean, just 3gb more ram and it costs Rm3k more? Also have to blame Apple Malaysia for still using the old USD rate @ 3.8 ($1499 x 3.8= RM 5696, about there)
The other alternative is to buy my own ram, up to 4gb and fit into the iMac, which would automatically void the warranty. I'm so sure I save a lot more, but at the same time I want the warranty as I'm afraid of anything.

Apples are fussy computers. RAM you buy outside might not work with it.

Getting Started

|
After you upgrade the RAM the warranty is still there. If you worry about the warranty, upgrade the RAM at any apple centre in Malaysia. I think cost you around RM1600 for 4GB RAM and sure the warranty won't void since you upgrade in the apple centre.

QUOTE(Thrust @ Oct 22 2007, 12:20 PM) Apples are fussy computers. RAM you buy outside might not work with it. I've had 6-7 Macs in the past 5 years, all of them were using 3rd party RAM with no problems. I also worked with Mac hardware for a long time, never had problems with 3rd party RAM. Don't buy cheap RAM but don't get duped into buying expensive memory. I might consider since I still hold the warranty. I'll have to google for the type of rams that work for iMac now. cutekid: I customized on Apple Store US and the 4gb of ram will cost way more than Rm1.6k. That's what is holding me back

Some advice from a long-time mac user:
1. Don't worry about buying third party RAM.
Do NOT buy RAM from Apple. It is overpriced and unless someone else is paying, doing so is just plain stupid.
You'll hear stories about "kernal panics" and unexplained crashes but it's all hogwash. As long as you buy RAM that fits the specs for the machine that you are buying it for you'll be fine. That much said, stay away from generic RAM and go for those with at least some track record of reliability. Mushkin, Kingston and OCZ come to mind but the list is (obviously) much longer.
2. By All Means : Install the RAM yourself. It will NOT void your warranty.
Then again; if you're a complete technological doofus and are unable to tell a phillips-head screwdriver from a flat-head one; do yourself a favor and pay the technician already.
3. Don't buy RAM you don't need.
Why do you need 4 gigs? Are you going to be doing a lot of rendering and CAD work? May I suggest going for 2 Gigs and monitoring your page-outs on iStat Pro (do a google search for iStat Pro: it's free btw - as is Google).

Thanks! But like you said, I'm a complete technological doofus, so I'll get a technician to install it for me. The reason for the 4GB of ram is simple, go for it if you can afford it. My current Windows pc is now stuck with just 384MB of ram. Didn't upgrade at all when I first bought it. RDRAM was later phased out and I'm left with no upgrade options The last remaining stocks are just too pricey now

Just FYI a 2GB RAM upgrade (from the existing 1GB) will cost you around RM120. A 4GB RAM upgrade is closer to RM900. These are Kingston (ie. brand name) RAM prices at LYP. Good luck.

Just stick with 2GB RAM and save the $. Wait until the 2GB RAM prices drop before you decide on the upgrade. That should save you a lot more Besides, u really wouldn't need so much RAM - seriously!

I'm on the other side, I use VMware very often and I wish I can have 4GB of RAM or more on my Macbook. I have 3GB now and it's just about enough... When I originally upgraded to 2GB, 1GB SO-DIMMs were RM450 a piece. Fortunately someone else is paying for RAM This post has been edited by tishaban: Oct 22 2007, 05:57 PM

Hehe. Divided opinions. True, I won't really utilize the ram so much. But I just enjoy blazing speeds. Will check out how Leopard runs on different amounts of ram when it launches and make up my mind. Till then, ty! btw i'm a ram junkie. that explains it
