Chan, who died on August 6, was also the drummer of the rock band Anodize, but was known equally for his songwriting. He wrote tracks for Hong Kong pop singers including Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing, Wang Leehom, Sammi Cheng Sau-man and Sandy Lam Yik-lin.
Among the Hong Kong entertainment figures who took to social media to mourn Chan were singer and actor Ronald Cheng Chung-kei, singer-songwriter Candy Lo Hau-yam and singer Alfred Hui Ting-hang. On their official Instagram page LMF wrote: “See you in the next life our big bro.”
Actor, singer and filmmaker Stephen Fung Tak-lun wrote: “RIP Davy. A great songwriter, a Kicka** drummer and guitarist, a kind human being, a dear friend I’ve known since 17 trying to bargain for a cheaper guitar at Tsang Fook Piano. You were always patient with me. Keep rocking wherever you may roam.”
Chan, born in 1971, was a founding member of LMF, Cantonese rap pioneers whose controversial lyrics and name (an abbreviation of “Lazy Mutha F**ka”) made them fan favourites.
“We are labelled as a ‘foul-language band’,” Chan said in a 2003 interview with the Post just before LMF broke up amicably after 11 years to allow their 10 members to work on solo projects.
Hong Kong-American actor Daniel Wu Yin-cho, Taiwanese boy band F4’s Vanness Wu and Hong Kong singer Eason Chan Yick-shun were in the audience for what was billed as the group’s farewell concert in 2003. LMF re-formed in 2009.
In a video interview included in LMF’s 2002 documentary Dare Ya, Chan said: “I put all my efforts into this. I ask myself, ‘If I don’t do this, what else would I do?’ My answer is ‘Nothing’. Sometimes I think I wouldn’t mind working like this ’til I’m old.”
In 2004, Chan debuted his solo DJ act under the name DBF, which stood for Davy Big Fly – “big fly” is a direct translation of his Cantonese nickname.
He began working in the Hong Kong music scene as a producer and recording artist in the late 1980s.
Chan had reportedly moved to Tokyo, Japan, last year with his 33-year-old wife after being forced by the impact of Covid-19 pandemic measures to close his Nobushi Shochu Bar in Observatory Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
Among the many well-known faces in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry reported to have been at his 2022 send-off were Paul Wong Koon-chung, guitarist of the Hong Kong rock band Beyond, and Josie Ho Chiu-yi, actress and daughter of the late Macau casino tycoon Stanley Ho Hung-sun, with whom Chan worked on a solo album after LMF broke up in 2003.
In June this year, LMF’s official Instagram account posted a group photo at the end of a long table with Chan in the centre, captioned, “Welcome back bro!” and tagged with Chan’s Instagram username.
Chan had reportedly sought treatment for a lung problem in Japan in April after experiencing chest pains that sometimes caused him to wake up in the night, and returned briefly to Hong Kong to seek traditional Chinese medicine treatments.
