An Insight into Gambling Issues at Genting Highlands casino

I read the Time Magazine article titled "Asia's Growing Gambling Addiction" with a heavy heart. I find casinos to be seriously distasteful as they exploit irrational, superstitious, and often uneducated individuals.


This perspective might be seen as biased, but when it comes to gambling, the average Asian tends to struggle with rational decision-making. Don't consider, don't think—just gamble.

If you've been to Genting Highlands casino , you'll understand my point. The casino games at Genting offer some of the worst odds in the world. Take, for example, the "Pontoon" tables.

Genting Highlands casino doesn't offer Blackjack tables, which is the only casino game that can be beaten through card counting (not possible with continuous shuffle systems). Instead, they offer "Pontoon," which is essentially Blackjack without the 10s in the UK. More 10s and Aces in the deck increase a player's odds in Blackjack. However, Genting's version of Pontoon is actually based on the American game Spanish 21.


The name "Pontoon" confuses people, and Genting's dealers describe the rules as "similar to blackjack." However, Genting doesn't even use standard Spanish 21 rules, only allowing doubles on two hands. This is significant for two reasons.

To effectively apply a basic strategy in Spanish 21, players must double frequently. Without card counting (impossible with continuous shuffling), the house edge can be reduced to about 2.08%, minimizing losses in the long run.


Unfortunately, since most gamblers at Genting Highlands casino believe they're playing Blackjack or UK Pontoon, they often fail to double down on 8-9-10s, putting them at a disadvantage worse than random play.




Confused already? You're not alone. Most gamblers don't bother understanding the game's rules.

When Genting won the bid for the Integrated Resort (IR) in Sentosa, Singapore, it was disappointing. If Singaporeans are ready to lose 3000 RM per hour at Genting, they will likely pay the entrance fee and lose even more in SGD.


This might explain why Genting won the bid—appealing to those with money to spend.



This is truly an issue in Asia, not just specific to the continent. Even in casinos in British Columbia, Canada, the predominant players are Chinese. It's not intended as a racist observation, but there seems to be a higher susceptibility to gambling addiction within the Chinese community.


The same trend can be seen in The Crown, Australia—the Southern Hemisphere's largest casino—and Star City, Sydney. A large portion of gamblers in these casinos are Chinese. Perhaps locals prefer betting on sports over cards, but it's undeniable that Chinese individuals are present.


In addition to psychological and family-focused assistance efforts, Singapore should ensure that house edges are displayed at each table.


Currently, only odds and payouts might be provided. Odds are usually displayed due to gambling rules (such as "Casino pays 3 to 2 on Blackjack"), but this doesn't help much except the casinos. Gamblers will inquire regardless.



I don't intend to belittle psychological and family-oriented support; they're valuable. However, for cigarettes, warning labels are applied, right? Similarly, because the risk of gambling is quantifiable, it should be provided.

Not everyone should end up in addiction clinics. This information, economists would agree, aids in making rational decisions—or at least in the least irrational way.

Displaying the house edge
("House has a 15% advantage even with best plan" or saying "everyone here might be wasting money")
is a beginning.


However, people still lose much money on tables with slightly smaller advantages (believing they can win even with a 5% edge), making it really hard to stop.

When players lose a lot, even those who aren't seriously into gambling usually stop. So, just saying the house edge isn't good enough.



Another approach is to follow British Columbia Casinos by providing basic strategy tables for games like Blackjack, where simply following these strategies can significantly reduce the house edge to about 3%.



Otherwise, family-focused and psychological support is insufficient to aid the "I-can-influence-card-outcomes" or "I-just-need-to-pray-harder" mindset. Gamblers often tend to embrace relatively favorable odds games but worsen their odds through poor play.


The classic example is Blackjack, and more recently, Caribbean stud poker (already possessing poor odds). Where the odds are nearly even, gamblers often opt for side bets with terrible odds.

In my opinion, gambling against the odds isn't inherently immoral or wicked. I wouldn't categorize gambling as a disease either. After all, it can be advantageous when one can beat the odds. Would you consider that a disease?

But what I really want to say is that when the new casino in Sentosa comes, it's going to be hard for Singaporeans who like gambling but don't have good chances to win.

Somebody should teach them about how likely they are to lose, the odds, and the best way to play. If they still choose to play the wrong way, there's not much that can help them.

There are some really bad bets you can make in casinos. Lotteries have low odds too, but they might not be as harmful. Here are some bad bets:

1)Keno, a casino lottery game, has a high 25% house edge. It started in China.

2)Betting on ties in Baccarat is bad, especially at Genting, with about 14.5% house edge.

3)Taking insurance in Pontoon is a terrible bet with a 30% house edge.

4)Roulette with both 0 and 00 has a 5.6% house edge. It's better to play with just one 0.

5)A Chinese game called "War" or "Tie War" has around a 19% house edge.




In some Dutch casinos, they use continuous shuffling machines to stop card counting.

Casino games always have a "house edge," which is the casino's profit from each bet.

Games like keno or slots usually have really bad odds, with a house edge up to 35%.

Card and dice games like blackjack have better odds. Skilled blackjack players face a 1% to 2% house edge, while unskilled players might face up to 20%.


Craps has a low house edge for skilled players, about 1%, and up to 16% for unskilled players.

Casinos don't usually share odds, but players say that in Belgium, blackjack odds are better, and in the Dominican Republic, keno odds are worse.

Remember, casinos need to make money, so the house usually wins. Players can do better by quitting while ahead, but that's hard to do.
