PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has agreed in principle on the re-development of transportation hub Kuala Lumpur Sentral and this will be without having any financial implication to the government, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the Cabinet, which met on Wednesday (Aug 2), has agreed for the re-development to be done by Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB).
“The project will be done via privatisation at a cost estimated to be more than RM1bil and will be borne by MRCB.
“It will not have any cost on the government,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Loke said in return, the company would be given the rights to develop the area above the station with commercial and residential buildings.
He said the re-development of Kuala Lumpur Sentral station was necessary to meet the increasing number of passengers using the various modes of transportation there.
He said the station was originally designed to cater for 100,000 passenger capacity daily but the number of passengers had reached 200,000.
The redevelopment will also allow for the station to be equipped with more sophisticated security systems, including the use of artificial intelligence which can monitor the movements of people,” he said.
One of the conditions stipulated by the government is that the re-development would not affect the operations of all the public transportation.
“The stations will be at the same location and will operate as usual with no disruptions,” he added.
The minister said that MRCB and the Public-Private Partnership Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department would hold discussions on the re-development plans and were given two years to finalise the agreement.
Plans to upgrade the heavily-used transport hub had been in the pipeline for some time.
In 2021, then transport minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had said that the government was mulling a major upgrade on Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station.
The station is a transit-oriented development, opened on April 16, 2001 and is designed as an intermodal transport hub.

QUOTE(nexona88 @ Aug 4 2023, 05:24 PM) Hmm... But that area also consider as KL Sentral 🤔 People who want to reach KL Sentral by MRT do stop at the Muzium Negara station of Kajang line / MRT 1, it's a bit of a distance but underground walkway all air-conditioned, heavy foot traffics during peak hours.

A lot of empty spaces in the current KL Sentral building especially the area in front of Maybank which previously hosted travel booths. MAS lounge and airport luggage check-in. Will MRCB demolish part of it and then rebuild

There were talks, book fairs, or other kind of events from time to time.

KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the redevelopment of the Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station (KL Sentral) will begin later this year.
He said the Ministry of Transport will work together with Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) on the said project.
"The station will undergo enhancements to make it more modern, efficient, and seamlessly connected to the surrounding areas.
"These enhancements will involve upgrades, redesigns, repurposing, and rebuilding efforts aimed at achieving a higher level of sophistication and modernity,” Loke told reporters after launching the opening of Menara Sentral RAC here today.
The minister also said that the redevelopment project had received Cabinet approval in principle last August to overhaul the KL Sentral Station through the Public Private Partnership initiative.
Project developer MRCB will undertake the redevelopment with a budget exceeding RM1.0 billion and this redevelopment will incur no cost to the government.
"Discussions with the Public Private Partnership Unit (Ukas), which comes under the Prime Minister’s Department, are underway,” he said.
STARPICKS Steering Malaysia's workforce for a sustainable future Loke also outlined his plan for the KL Sentral area, detailing a comprehensive initiative to link all buildings, to improve public mobility and access.
"This interconnected network would enable smooth transitions between different points within the area, ultimately making navigation more convenient and effortless for the public,” he said. - Reuters

KL Sentral really needed some major renovation....
Their capacity already too overload.... Cannot withstand the traffic & people... Too pack....
Hopefully no delays especially financially... Since it's Private funding

Instead of KL sentral only, I hope can enhance all the KL sentral and Brickfields area.
Because this is a very important area for golongan but a blink person. I see the road system design is great but a lot broken and old facilities already. I hope they can face-lift and make the city more friendly to them and of course the public transport in kl sentral.

First class facility but third class maintenance mentality
So in the end, broken here & there.... Leaking here there... Damage here there... No repair work done seriously

that area really needs some major upgrade..
it's passed its purposes & handling capacities....
looks more like "little high class" bus station than major transport hub
