The original Gears of War first debuted on the Xbox 360 in 2006, and a year later on the PC. Both version were met with great critical acclaim and sales, with the PC version including some extra content. Gears of War 2 on the other hand, never saw release on the PC and was an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Gears of War 3 so far has only been announced on the Xbox 360, but what are the chances of seeing the game on PC? The original Gears of War on the PC was used as a way of launching Microsoft’s new Games For Windows Live service, which has since been quite unsuccessful compared to the likes of Valve’s Steam. Technically, Gears of War 3 on the PC is entirely possible, as it’s made with Epic’s Unreal Engine 3, which would make the game easy to port to the PC, and even the PlayStation 3. However, it of course depends on what Microsoft wants to do. They certainly have no intentions of allowing the game to be released on the PS3, but what would a PC release of Gears of War 3 mean?

For one, it would mean less Xbox 360 console sales, at least during the 2011 holiday period, as many folks will buy an Xbox 360 to play Gears 3, much like with Gears of War 1 and 2. When asked about the possibility of Gears of War on the PC, Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski recently said “you’re going to see PC gaming come to rise in the next few years”. He didn’t outright deny or confirm anything, but we have a sense that we could see Gears of War 3 on the PC perhaps a year after the release on the Xbox 360.

According to new rumors (and we stress, rumors), Epic is very interested in bringing Gears of War 3 to the PC after the recent success with Bulletstorm, which was released on the Xbox 360, PS3 and on the PC as well. However, it’s unknown whether Epic or Microsoft holds the rights to release the game on the PC.
