Usually tyre already has an in built indicator.
The line across the thread. If already the same level then it is time to change. This post has been edited by AthrunIJ: Jul 28 2023, 08:30 AM |

QUOTE(Zhik @ Aug 3 2023, 10:59 PM) Yes, 10 years for aftermarket like Continental brand etc.You may google in lowyat for screenshots (I uploaded 2-3 years back) of tyre manufacturer manuals saying so. Socalled 'cracks' on external surfaces of sidewall rubber or tread compound rubber (as natural part of rubber hardening/oxidation/aging) in itself is not a structural problem leading to tyre burst and hence safe for continuing service. You may want to identify and watch for exposure or puncture of tyre structural members in the form of nylon/fibre/steel plies or belts, which rarely occurs in the real world. Rubber compound materials, be it on sidewall or treads is NOT a structural member.Period. This post has been edited by zeng: Aug 6 2023, 01:31 PM |

QUOTE(Zhik @ Aug 6 2023, 05:59 PM) Thanks for the input, what is the tyre got small puncture at the thread area and repaired before? How long can it last? Tyre tread area puncture repair by external plug method has been prevalent, common and low cost for decades has proven to be effective and often times easily last till the tyre end of life at standard 1.6 mm tyre wear indicator level/mark.However, tyre manufacturers recommends the other alternative method of 'patching' from inside surface of tyre after separating rim from tyres. This method is more time consuming and costs slightly more. In either case, a tread puncture repair should last till a tyre's end of life generally. Note: Tyre manufacturers recommend against repairing a punctured sidewall. This post has been edited by zeng: Aug 6 2023, 10:22 PM Zhik liked this post

My tires was >8 years old (due to long storage on rim, but off the car), when finally install on the car, had loud tire noise and can feel hardened rubber.Other incidences like loud tyre noise/hardened rubber compound/so-called slippery/so-called handling/tyre botak/so-called scratches and roughened patches/rubber compound surface cracks etc etc does not fall under the criteria of tyre manufacturer requiring service termination/replacement of tyres. Of course tire shops wanna make $$$, keep asking to change, but just kept using it. But it did exhibit accelerated wear and was worn out within 3k-4k km.... worn so fast until inner nylon/fibres visible. |

QUOTE(Zhik @ Aug 3 2023, 10:59 PM) I just change my car tyres late last year. Tyre manufacturing date was mid year 2014. Initially I wanted to change it this year but last year Hankook had a good promo and therefore I changed a few months earlier.Original tyres were Continental CSC5. QUOTE(MegaCanonF @ Jul 28 2023, 08:27 AM) Actually if you drive a lot (say 5000 or more KM every month consistently, like outstation sales/services), you dont even need to follow any guidelines. Your driving will tell you if you need to change your tyres. For example, you might want to change the tyres earlier if you travel a lot to prevent aquaplanning on wet road at higher speed if you travel on highway a lot. If you drive slow like a taxi driver, 40-60kmh most of the time, then you can just stick to your tyres until it's end of life. |
