The last time I went to a government dentist as a kid, I remember screaming through the entire process and tooth-ache for 2 days before private doctor could get rid of the pain.
Never again...

ouh. figured as much.

somehow i can only relate the experience to be the same as those dental clinic visit to government school. wasn't pleasant as i remembered very vividly that the nurse forcefully extracted my milk teeth with a playar looking tool.

It's your teeth. Whenever you smile, people will see your entire facial expression. Better go to a dentist you trust to do a good job.

There's a waiting list iirc. Like someone mentioned above, you gotta have the patience to wait. Also not all gov clinics will have it, only clinics with a specialist attachment. Cost wise I think can refer to KKM website

i did some basic reading and it turns out the longevity of a crown is highly subjective as it depends on myriad of factors but if statistics are to be believable, 25 years is a good estimation however with extremely good oral hygiene care, it will still be there when you are put into the coffin.

not sure what is the normal price. my wife did one in Cheras, costs her around RM900.00 but that was about a year ago. i asked one earlier but in Puchong, around RM1k+

will update again after i come back from my visit tomorrow but point to note, these are the basic bitch stuffs. no zirconia, no diamond stuffs etc.

kepong/kuchai lama is too far for me to travel.

then i doubt that waiting period will be very long as long as the patient willing to pay full price on the crown cost. its not like braces where it requires specialist to the work and the materials were heavily subsidized.

see the remark, crown/metal cost are not covered.
most of the time gomen dentist recommended for teeth removal than go for root canal and filling/crown later when it come to molar(especially wisdoms) at the back.

most likely the reason is simple, dead teeth are extremely fragile, it will just crack, rotten and fell off soon.

cost aside, i think it also depends on the availability of the materials/resources (the material to take the crown impression, the lab tech to fabricate/mill the crown, etc) and whether they deem your case suitable to be taken up or not. though i do note some clinics are able to do it faster than others.

I did mine at government dental clinic. Get zirconia crown for RM250. Paid to dental lab after measurements at the clinic. After they measured the size, they'll give you the account number for the dental lab to be paid before the second appointment. Then 3rd appointment installation.

Total cost
1. 1st visit, see dental officer, not a specialist to get an appointment with a dental specialist to do crown. Rm1

2. 2nd visit, see dental specialist for suitability to do crown.. maybe. Rm3. If you're lucky straight away measurements etc.

3. Pay the cost of the crown to the dental lab. Rm250. Btw, some gomen clinic has their own dental technician to make the crown but waiting period might be longer. Some clinics have 3d printer. Iinm only 3 in the whole country. Don't know where. I heard this from people sembang kencang.

4. 3rd or 4th visit, install crown.

5. 6 months after another appointment to check on the crown.

6. hidden cost, you need to start flossing. At least around the crowned area

Mine was a molar so more expensive.

Most gomen dental clinic in busy area will recommend you to extract the teeth. I did mine in a rural town. Doctors not that busy. But they can only do root canal. Crowning has to go to certain places.

anyway, just an update.

just came back from the dentist - wanted to proceed with the crowning but needs to do scaling first so that has already been done.

set an appointment for next Wednesday to start the 2 stage process.

1st stage is to mould and take impression of the teeth to be crowned (estimated time: 1 ~ 2 hours), after that, a temporary crown will be put in place.

approximately 2 weeks later, the 2nd stage will commence and this is the easy part, just install the permanent crown.

as for material of the crown, there are basically 2 options; one the dentist called "e-max" and another "zirconia" - according to the dentist, they are essential more or less the same but the former has a metal sheet inlay which contributes to a stronger structure but will appear "less white". the later is the more expensive option, made entirely of ceramic/porcelain, relatively weaker but appearance wise will look similar to natural teeth and usually recommended for teeth that are on the front row (visible).

all-in costs RM1,000.00.

be that as it may, while the crown is synthetic but it can also crack, chip or fracture like normal teeth if subjected to high pressure or bad oral hygiene.

Did my root canal a few months back on my molar teeth, quite a painful process drilling the hole into the nerves and injecting the chemical to melt them. Sucking the melted nerve out is fine since its already dead and cant fire pain signals anymore.

Root canal alone cost 1.8k, crowning appointment this weekend

Mine not painful at all except when the dentist injected the bius. Only took like 4 hours per session coz the dentist first time doing root canal at molar. Had to call seniors and specialists to assist and clarify some issues. Apparently my tooth was complicated.

UPDATE: Leaving this here for posterity.

I misunderstood regarding the crowning material.

To simplify things, there are basically 2 materials commonly in use at the moment; one being Porcelain Fused Over Metal (PFM) or the higher end, Zirconia. The price difference between the 2 is 1x of each other (ie: PFM is at RM1,000.00 per tooth and the Zirconia is somewhere at RM2,000.00 per tooth).

PFM is basically metal base with porcelain exterior hence the name but now, it can be had with Zirconia on its exterior with no extra charge. There are pros and cons for both the PFM and the Zirconia but the biggest consideration is that if you have or suspect or fear that you may have an allergy to metals then PFM is to be avoided.

anyway, just an update.

just came back from the dentist - wanted to proceed with the crowning but needs to do scaling first so that has already been done.

set an appointment for next Wednesday to start the 2 stage process.

Why nobody mentioned about Emax material? I thought Emax are now widely used also? Apparently with better translucency and aesthetics compared to Zirconia, but less stronger than Zirconia?

see the remark, crown/metal cost are not covered.
most of the time gomen dentist recommended for teeth removal than go for root canal and filling/crown later when it come to molar(especially wisdoms) at the back.

most likely the reason is simple, dead teeth are extremely fragile, it will just crack, rotten and fell off soon.

Yep this. Private dentist some very unethical especially those big franchise ones, anything just sensitive not even infected will ask you to do root canal then crown just to earn your money. Never explain to customer the teeth will die and become brittle, once break even with crown you need to do implant pulak, luckily I tarik handbrake and Google first then go to another dentist padahal can solve with filling and sensodyne toothpaste, now totally fine and teeth healthy.
