I took Sri Maju, Alisan, Lucky Express, Suasana Tony. All will drop you off in town, few minutes walk from Lee Gardens only. You can buy your return tickets from them, got a few travel agencies there. Usually I'll get my return ticket from New Hoover cos better service

For SIM card, you can buy while queuing at the border (Thailand side) for RM20 traveller SIM, 7 days unlimited. It'll be THB200 if you buy in Thailand. If you need more than 7 days you can buy the normal SIM at 7E (AIS, THB49 for the SIM then reload THB200 to buy unlimited data for 1 month)

Usually I'll walk cos most of the places are within walking distance. Just few minutes walk from my hostel to Lee Gardens, <15 mins walk to the train station. Furthers i walk is 30 mins to a small roadside herbs stall for Thai stick (THB50/pack) or Central Mall.

I get my return ticket from New Hoover for THB650, or you can just buy from any travel agencies around the town. My advice is better buy when you arrive as the tickets are sold out fast especially during public or long holiday. I kena a few times before to BKK, can't get a bus or train ticket. Even minivan are limited. Return to KL kena once only, have to extend 1 night.

Btw, you can rent a bike for THB250 - THB300/day if you wanna explore the town. There's also plenty of songthaew and taxi around the town

Agree, nothing much to do in Hatyai. Usually I'll stay for 2 nights then go other places like Koh Lipe or Hua Hin to chill. Don't really like the Phuket's vibe
