My iCloud photos and videos 30+GB, I mirror it to my iPhone 13 and iPhone 6s (that I use as bike computer when go out cycling). Optimise mode for photos only saves thumbnail, it currently only used 200MB on my iphone6s 32GB. by viewing it the phone will download the full resolution version off the icloud. the photos are half the size of jpeg versions too since it is using another more efficient codec. Nicest thing is if I took photo with my iPhone 6s, after it sync on wifi at home my iphone 13 will have the photo too and vice versa.

My iCloud is cheap because shared across family one plan, like less than rm20 per month with shared 2TB iCloud, Apple Music app (which is I think the best catalogue and sound quality atm-you get uncompressed cd quality as well as hi res for free, Apple TV, fitness subscription, Apple Arcade all included). Accessible to pc too

But the best thing on iCloud backup is you can lose your phone and just get another iPhone, login your userid and everything will be restored exactly like your lost iPhone, down to the volume level you set for every sound settings, even custom aac sound clip ringtones you I made myself and inserted into the iPhone is restored as is.

i also forgot to mention even old ass phone like the iphone 6s, it still receives critical ios updates until now

thats your only assumption, my 512GB transcend ssd370s from year 2015 are purely used as seedbox/torrent transit storage, previously containing OS. disk health were around ~95% (lazy to check but within that figures). also what constant write are you talking about with cloud storage? you are not going to do content creation task on that cloud storage directly, most likely you need to store those content on your machine first as files before transferring to the cloud storage. can you use google drive as torrent storage, you cant right? even if you can, the latency will be way too high to write something there.
the main reason why phone manufacturer nowadays give 256gb or more storage were to allow users to be less dependence to network storage. you can always whatever auto-sync feature, but it will read/write on the device storage first.

problem with cloud storage pricing were it didnt give much flexibility, if i need to store 201GB of data, i am forced to subscribe for more expensive 2TB plan, there is nothing in the middle(500GB or 1TB plan). how about pricing for anything higher than that? yes it is convenience, but you need to pay a freaking premium for it.

unless you specifically upload big files onto the cloud storage, i use for like 10 years also my icloud storage usage haven't exceeded 50GB now. or do you take photos and videos alot everyday?

for your info, the normal codec for saving images on iphone is HEIF and 12megapixels, it ranges from 1-3MB per photo, very little. The only big size image file is ProRAW on iphone 13 pro & 14 pro, with 14 pro's 12mp proraw at ~25MB and 48mp at ~75MB. That's around the same size as RAW files captured on dlsr

plus if you need over 200GB icloud data it's more worth to get the apple one family plan at rm78.9/month and share it with other ppl. so around rm15-17 per person for sharing 2TB icloud, apple music, apple tv, apple arcade, fitness+ all in one. Other people cannot see your icloud files unless you share it out

Normally large video files are the main culprits. That and some simulation data files. I also tried an sd card for transit storage when downloading files too. Died within a year. Write is the problem, read when you are seeding is usually ok.

Maybe not advisable to rely on disk health numbers, from my experience solid state drives die abruptly. For mechanical hard disks, you still have hope of slowly copying some files out when you see trouble signs. Not sure about new improvements nowadays.

if alot read and write buy better quality ssd drives, you can use crystaldiskinfo to see how much data read/write total and total ssd health. Most quality ssd have manufacturer rated total data writes stated iinm

andriod not using HEIF.....that's why their photo usually 5MB and above

Probably not by default, android 10+ can support HEIC. some need to toggle to use it, while some don't even have settings to enable saving to HEIC on the default camera app like my oppo, default camera app captures in jpg.
And also alot android are using like 48mp, on my oppo each 48mp photos are like 10MB. And funny thing is 48mp doesn't mean shiet when the 12mp iphone photos are vastly superior, sensors matters more and thats why high end android with good camera is expensive

android world care about compatibility. so whats wrong with that?
in the era of gigabit per second internet service, who the hell care about how big jpg size is. most picture format on the internet are either png or jpg (and gif too)

Because you are the one saying icloud 201GB need to use expensive 2TB plan, but in reality iphone 12mp HEIC photos are tiny sizes and unless intentionally capture videos everyday, people barely need to use 200GB icloud and most are fine with 50GB icloud size. You are comparing the big android photo library sizes to iphone which is not comparable at all for casual user.

yeah and by saying need to sub rm40/month for 2TB plan is like kinda wasteful in his intentions. In reality you can sub apple one 200GB plan at rm40/month and then add rm3.9/month to add 50GB to have a total of 250GB, so for rm44 you get 250GB icloud size, apple music, apple tv, apple arcade in one go, way more value.

but biggest value is to share the apple one family 2TB plan, share it out, more ppl the cheaper. i pay less than rm20 per month to share 2TB icloud size... while getting apple music (way better than spotify tbh), apple tv, apple arcade, fitness+)

so the way to stack your storage plan were to subscribe to both apple one and additional icloud+ subscription, cant be icloud+icloud?
anyway i dont refer to icloud in first place, just normal google drive, but yeah this is icloud thread anyway, so yeah i am wrong.
*
stacking can only be from different plans, only apple one + icloud+, cos they are the rule maker, following standard pricing as others like google one storage size for the icloud+

btw if wanna share files in cloud drive google is probably better, can easily create links to share via email or something, apple one iinm kinda annoying like i remember very mafan or it pushes to share on idevices or something, no idea now malas check
