Thank you! Yes both have coverage in my area cos it's very near to central KL area. It also has full 5G in my hometown of Johor, I know cos I am a UM user for their postpaid line and the speed is DAMN good on my phone, like 350-450 mbps.
YES package i read the max speed of the device is capped at 120 Mbps and also it throttles the speed of other telcos' SIM cards.
Also it seems it's a pretty crappy cheap china model whose price has been marked up significantly so I would prefer to be able to find a 5g router that will work nicely with any SIM.
I have been using both umobile 5G and YES 5G sim since 5-6 months ago, at my areas they are the same coz both telco share the same communication towers from DNB.
The key difference I noticed is that with YES I can download torrent file, without the need of VPN. Umobile cannot download torrent.

I see... Thank you.
I live literally opposite a 5G fitted "tower" and get about 650 Mbps on my Samsung A phone. The tower is like... 150m from my face
I just ordered the Zyxel NR5103E and will be getting the SIM soon. Now wondering which one to get. YES is cheaper and no FUP but I read that people said telco can cap the speed on routers other than theirs? Is this true?
I actually don't torrent a lot -- but I play MP games so ping is quite important. Anything under 20 is okay lah. I also use streaming services and am a heavy user of Youtube, Netflix, Disney Plus. I have VPN anyway if I need to torrent anything.
I DO have a TP Link Archer AX 20 though, which I plan to use as an AP, though I'm not sure if it will help much (will it?) I can try and share results.
Would you know if I can configure Nord VPN to the Zyxel NR5103E router itself? Because I cannot use it with my Archer AX 20...
Now during festive season peak hours speeds can drop below 100Mbps even with full bar signal strength.
High congestion now.
Don't do normal speedtest, the results are fake.
Try using sites which allow you to download files directly from it like OVH file download test site. Use a download manager to test with no more than 4 connections.
My bf his unifi FTTH yesterday terus kaput in the evening, before new year. Kelam kabut trying to find out if unifi was down, and yes it was in some states lol. Took a couple of hours to get back up.
I think 100 Mbps is STILL better than having to deal with frequent downtimes and congestion from FTTH providers, especially unisuck. And I've been with UMobile 5G for over a year and I am super pleased with it. In fact, I used it way more at home than my own Time fiber because that one even tho 300 Mbps, ping high la, slow la, can't even load my Netflix or Youtube. Really pek chek with it, so I believe this switch to 5G is gonna be a MAJOR QOL upgrade
Gais I just got the Zyxel 3UK (well it is not ori Zyxel for sure) and there seems to be some issues. I bought from a Shopee seller with the guarantee that if not ori can refund. But anyway I don't really care much if ori, u get what u pay for and as long as it works I'm ok.
Currently testing the unit to check its capabilities with my UMobile SIM (normal postpaid cellular).
Problems:
1. Cannot lock on to 5g-NSA ONLY. Only have these options below. What is the point of the 3UK router if it auto switches and I cannot lock to pure 5G??? I have chosen B28 and N78 cos I have no choice. Is this device broken or modified or something?
2. I speedtested and normal Ookla was 450 Mbps. However Cloudflare only gave 258 Mbps (which is maybe considered "true" speed). But on my Samsuck A phone, I could previously get 650 Mbps from the same SIM card. So I effectively lost about 200 Mbps.
Please note that I am right beside a 5G tower. Like maybe less than 100m away. So it's not the tower. Is it possible that speed will reduce during afternoon? My 650Mbps speed was at 3 am lol.
Cloudflare result:
Ookla result:
This is how close I am:
3. I have reason to believe the device given to me is not new. I found scratch marks in the SIM as well as reset slot. Furthermore when I tried to login admin, the default password was denied so I had to hard reset the device. Before the unit was sent to me, the seller said they were "testing" the device before sending. I know this is one way sellers try to hide that it's not a new unit, but I'm not sure if all these things that I noticed make the case that it is a returned unit. I AM still paying full normal market price even if it is OEM lor.
4. Why are my stats so low? RSRP -54? Shouldnt it be -80? Especially considering I am right beside the tower????? Are the other stats ok?

Zykel 5G modems are not recommend since it's performance is not that good, the power of this modem to pull 5G signals are not that good. It is even worse when use the built in wifi function of that modem.
Since you have purchased it, I would suggest you to disable the built the wifi and use an external router connected via ethernet cable. This helps with performance a bit.
If have a budget I would suggest getting Huawei , ZTE 5G modems. Although it cost RM1k above but good quality and performance.

1) No you cannot connect to 5G-SA only(N78) by itself because connecting to B28 LTE as the baseband is compulsory before you combine with it with N78(5G) so you need to also include 4G LTE for it to work. Look carefully there is NO option for 5G-NSA only but the 2nd one is 5G-SA. This has nothing to do with the modem but DNB overall setup. For now you can only choose option 1 or 3.
2) If your signal is already so strong like placing your modem next to the tower, the only cause of slowdown is CONGESTION and high density of users at your place. Many of your neighbors must be also on the 5G network connecting to the same tower as you. It's shared with limited resources.
3) Most of these units are re-conditioned the telco logo on them already is proof. But for half the price of a new set as long as it performs like new with little noticeable scratched marks why bother? You want to pay 2-3X for a virgin set?
4) RSRP -54dB is better than perfect already. It's like placing the modem next to the tower. Most people can only get -80dB
-54dB is much more stronger signal reception than -80dB it's counter closer to 0dB.

I have read it from other post too, Zyxel NR5103E is not a very good modem though comes with Qualcomm chip.
My Yeacomm 5G modem is quite fast, though with Mediatek chip.
I disagree. The vendor E which installed the 5G equipment for actually Zyxel CPEs as benchmark CPE for testing the 5G network during pilot tests. You know they are not in good terms with China so the next preference is Taiwanese brand with Qualcomm SD 5G modem chipset in it.
Zyxel is very popular CPE device brand in Sweden.
As you can see here in Stockholm, the 5G modem is being tested with one of their major 5G ISP there, Tele2:
So I must say it is the MOST Compatible modem with DNB's Ericsson 5G equipment.

So as others have mentioned 1. 4G is needed as well, can't just force 5G 2. 5G, unlike fixed fiber doesn't have a set speed and it's dependant on best effort So, speeds you get are based on the towers usage Say, there is a 10Gbps line connecting the tower to the network (just example, not actual line speed) And there's 100 users connected to it And say that everyone is downloading at the same time (unrealistic) That's just 100Mbps for every single person So, the speeds vary depending on what everyone on the network is doing
Think of it like a giant public WiFi network with a fixed speed that everyone is sharing
*Granted, usually the sharing is not fair, some customers like those on unlimited plans are lower priority
3. You bought a telco branded set meant for another country Where do you think they get them from? So yeah, used And no, you're not paying the full price for it But it's hard to say what is the original price since basically all of them out there are 3 or EE telco branded units
4. it's a negative number, so lower number is better

thanks for sharing, very profound explanation and detailed infos indeed
i too bought the zyxel nr5103e router, so far no any issue except occasionally having to restart the router to regain the internet connectivity, not sure if its YES telco problem cause i saw a few posts stating the similar issue on YES but not on Umobile
for the rest or most of the time, performance has been stable and consistently on 5g, speed hits 500-600mbps, what more to ask lol, hopefully it lasts

Yes telco problem confirmed. For the past 2 months since December 2023 every month sure 3-4 times down at least which lasted for few hours.
Had to turn off the modem for few hours then turn it back on. My 5G phones with Umobile and CelcomDiGi 5G no problem all connected to same shared 5G DNB tower in my area.

guess we will hv to live with this common issue for a while, in my case it usually happens after about 3 weeks, but i dint wait for few hours to turn it back on but keep restarting it
i kind of figured out that on the first restart, internet line will still be down, on the second restart, it will reconnect for a while but then down again, only on the third or fourth attempt it will back to work as normal again, perhaps you can try doing this next time

The other way I workaround that is I turn off 5g and use 4g for some time then switch back to 5g. 100 gb is plenty enough for that few times a month.
I encounter this for around 30 minutes to an hour every 2 weeks or so.
Thinking of upgrading Zyxel to X50-5G because of the good feedback from many ppl claiming they get 3x speed before and after using Deco. Right now I'm getting around only 100Mbps/15Mbps download/upload and playing PlayStation online games is a nightmare due to lagging. I wonder is it because wifi broadband itself causing it or can it be solved by buying a better modem router.

Anyone here can advise kah?
I upgraded to x50 5G FROM n103E a few months back. A slight improvement in terms of connection stability and speed....yes, but I doubt you could get 3X speed if you upgrade. There are many factors involved

yeah thats what I fear. Buying a new router just to get slight improvement in speed and stability. Maybe I need to reconsider subscribing to fibre broadband just to play some online games

Should be good, i am using it's cousin the Tplink NX510V, during 1st few months able to get around 600ish mbps.. Now with more and more 5G users around my place still able to get around 300mbps dload and 100mbps upload..
