Zyxel got lemon unit No 5G

*
Got 4 different variants

NR5101 - Older X55 Snapdragon chipset based similar to the Arcadyan AW1000

NR5103 - EE UK only 2x2 MIMO AX1800

NR5103E - 3 UK Unit with E as in Enhanced 4x4 MIMO AX3600 with 2X 2.5Gbps ports

NR5103v2 - 3 UK Unit with slim down cost reduction model still same Mediatek T750 chipset as NR5103E but only has 2 antenna ports and only GE 1Gbps ports??

NR5103EV2 vs the NR5103E? - 5G Routers
https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/com...03e_5g_routers/

Heard that Zyxel uses a customized version of the OpenWRT firmware for its Router OS? Meaning its already running on OpenWRT but hardened secured version.

Many of the units on sale now are the NR5103 with EE logo on them. Cannot band lock and only have AX1800

When those sellers found out the real value of the 3 UK version they immediately de-listed them from being sold. icon_idea.gif

Fibre internet providers now sweating and don't have a clue why their revenues are now slowly reducing?

For the price you're paying with no contracts you still want to return to 100Mbps fibre? laugh.gif

So my office bosses are allowing me to use the Deco for long term. And so here are my findings after resetting it and messing around. Comparisons will be made against the ZTE that U Mobile provides:
a) Averaging 600Mbps on SpeedTest to ViewQWest across two tests performed in the morning and now (in the midst of PJ's thunderstorm!)
b) Unable to split the wifi signals to individual 2.4 and 5Ghz
c) Unable to control the strength of the wifi signal (Don't like the idea I'm blasting out my frequency for all and sunder to view)
d) Unable to lock the 5G and 4G network bands
e) Unable to lock to just 5G signal and not fallback to 4G
f) Everything is performed through the app (Web portal is pretty much information only for the Deco)

So in short, if you want a very controlled and PnP device, this is for you! smile.gif

Also, came across this in TP Link's website:
https://www.tp-link.com/my/home-networking/...i/archer-nx200/
*
Are you from TP-Link marketing team or one of their resellers? They seem to do a lot of indirect promotional posts around in this forum using accounts to give testimonials about their products.

Not to say their products are not high quality but the local resellers on can be sometimes unreliable and dishonest.

Used to buy from one of the main local reseller/distributor, but ended up receiving a used unit with notable scratches on its SIM slot and teared protective sticker.

That was the last time I bought from them.I learn to always forgive but NEVER to forget.

Prefer to buy direct from a reliable China supplier directly if possible.

Finally got my replacement after threatened them with MCMC. No Kaon, still the same MC888S.

First thing to do, get an old Umo sim and access the modem. Upon inspecting the firmware, it's the same. Still, i disable the auto update.

Then, swap the sim card with the active one. Try to overload the modem with heavy download from multiple devices. So far no dc. Touchwood...will keep monitoring.

Maybe you should reject the MC888S by returning it again and ask for a Kaon replacement instead?

Should have waited until new stock arrives. It's actually supposed to be better with a Mediatek chipset inside.

Finally found a good spot in my house... wonder why ppl still pay 3 digits for internet... maybe for torrent but I already stop torrent for many years

*
It's fine if you're a single user who spends most of your time away from the house with work.
I spent almost twice of what I pay now last time with fibre with only about 1/10 of the speed. Everyday by the time return home will only use it for a while before sleep. Nothing much to download only streaming most of the time.

For me paying 3 digits is a waste of money because I don't get to use it at home most days. I live away from my family so nobody to share with also let it go to waste.

Yeah, big for me. I have the old Huawei B618 LTE router for many years so when I got this router last year, I was shocked by the size and it is bigger. laugh.gif
I thought technology will make stuff smaller and sleeker. laugh.gif
*
Not just big, it has built in fan. After a while earlier this year they finally stopped selling it because it was very sought after in the market. In UK, the NR5103E v1(big sized version) good condition unit can be resold for almost 300-400 pounds. 3 UK after that also took it down and reintroduced a cut costing Zyxel NR5103E v2 which is smaller in sized, has only 2 antenna ports and only comes with Gigabit ports unlike the v1 which has 2.5Gbps ports.

Same. Bought the "3" model off Shopee during a sale (Got it for RM520 - earlier managed to get it for RM490 during a sale but Shopee stupid payment system kept the payment pending until after the sale is over  mad.gif  bangwall.gif )

I have since bought the Olax G5010 for use at office - surprisingly able to get and maintain 5G signal even indoor at an area about 1km outside official coverage - same area has very weak 4G coverage. Speed not bad too peaking at around 150Mbps
*
The MiFi IMHO is not worth buying. It has no Ethernet port which means you can only connect to it wirelessly.

Not recommended to invest for another 5G modem for time being.

DNB infra is showing its age already. It is now showing difficulty keeping up with upload speeds especially during peak hours. It does not only affect Yes but also Umobile and CelcomDiGi 5G. During peak hours I could get below 10Mbps upload speeds despite achieving over 50Mbps during offpeak hours.

Also DNB coverage is just meh for me, with Maxis, CelcomDiGi and UMobile having their own dedicated towers at my area, even their LTE-A/4G+ speeds rocks close to 200Mbps on a good day while DNB 5G infra can only deliver consistently 300Mbps during less traffic times. It is getting worst now as 5G adoption rate increases. I remember last year easily can achieve 700-1Gbps+ when it's less congested early mornings.

One thing I noticed, Maxis is at this point of time is silently digging trenches around my housing garden area and placing their branding manholes all around. It's like they are planning some sort 5G infra backhaul upgrade to their existing towers for a new 5G-Advanced network.

Wonder what they're up to. I know it's not for FTTH because my area is already served by TM's ageing and rotting Unifi when they can't even deliver reliable 1Gbps with their outdated network. Some of the FDP boxes are so badly maintained that they just leave the covers opened and exposed for rain water to get in and animals to make nests in them.

Will wait for the next generation of 5G Advanced fixed access modems to flood the market.

i use olax g5018. got it at rm788 during last 6.6 sale. so far so good. hnghhhh never disconnect & no random reboot at all. speed stable 200mbps - 400mbps with nearest 5g tower is about 2km from my house. no regret at all. so relieved i didn't fall for UM *free router for 24 months contract* scam. without any contract & i can change to any imei within 10 seconds, I'm free to change to other telco & can use any *phone only* sim without any worries. hehe. plus I can connect it to external parabolic/hyperbolic antenna in the future (if my place becomes too congested bec 5g users keep increasing here)..
*
No ethernet port and a little too large to fit into the pocket.

Prefer to use a good 5G phone as hotspot.

Will wait for the next generation 5G-Advanced modems to be introduced to the market which supports multi carrier aggregation.

Only SD X65 above chipsets can support it.

Early results with CelcomDiGi, Maxis and Umobile show very promising results can reach above 20Gbps and the latency can match fibre already.

Current DNB old 5G equipment is slowly showing its age. We need 2nd 5G network to intensify the competition.

Oh, I didn’t know it has a built-in fan, no wonder it’s so big. laugh.gif

My speed is still consistently 500Mbps and above regardless if it’s peak hours but I use it in Seremban and not Klang Valley. I do agree our current routers are sufficient for now.
*
Late last year and earlier this year when 5G was still new, my area could consistently see speeds break 700Mbps during off peak hours.

It's getting slower and slower now with higher 5G adoption. I'm only getting around 300-200Mbps mostly now. My upload speed can drop below 10Mbps sometimes even below 5Mbps during peak hours observed with all the 5G telcos CelcomDigi, Umobile and YES making the wholesale network DNB the culprit.

This means it's due time for a 2nd 5G-Advanced network.

For the buildout UMobile earlier mentioned in the news that they're going to use Huawei equipment for West Malaysia and ZTE for Borneo.

Avoid the ZTE if you're planning to subscribe and use in Peninsula Malaysia or Huawei is you're using it in East Malaysia.

Best compatibility with equipment vendor.

Yeah their own 5G network will be using Huawei systems in the future.

I would also lean towards Huawei for now, factoring in the higher available 200MHz 2CC bandwidth.

Looking for other user feedback online, seems like there are no glaring issues with either of the routers provided. An improvement would be finding a cost effective solution to offload the wifi from the router to another access point.

This ZTE modem is being promoted in Sibu, Sarawak.

Quoting Umobile press statement on their next gen 5G vendors:

U Mobile signs Huawei, ZTE as vendors to deploy Malaysia’s second 5G network
https://soyacincau.com/2025/04/15/u-mobile-...ysia-second-5g/

QUOTE
Meanwhile, U Mobile has also decided to divide the country into two deployment zones for these vendors to cover.

Specifically, Huawei has been tasked to cover Peninsular Malaysia while ZTE is responsible for the deployment in East Malaysia, according to the telco’s Chairman, Vincent Tan.

Depending if you live in Peninsula Malaysia or East Malaysia it's best to go with the carrier vendor equipment that is in your area.

Choosing Huawei modem if you're living in East Malaysia might not be the right decision.
Alternately choosing ZTE if you're living in Peninsula Malaysia is less recommended when the equipment vendor is Huawei.

Carrier aggregation is the ability of connecting to multiple 5G bands ie: n28 + n78 / n78 + n78 .

I don't think it's related to connecting between telcos.
*
Umobile has already resigned their intention to quit from the DNB1 consortium to build their own 5G network.

After this they won't able to access DNB's 100MHz network dicing already once they're out.

U Mobile Confirms That It Will Exit From DNB SHA, in Line With Terms of Transition as the Nation’s Newest 5G Network Provider
https://www.u.com.my/en/about-us/newsroom/p...in-line-with-t0

If they don't build up their 5G network fast enough soon within 12 months they'll be out of the 5G race. Also maintaining the entire 5G network themselves will incur very high expenses, the high cost will surely carry over to consumers while their plan pricing will be among the highest in the industry.

Even today, Umobile plans are getting very expensive they are no longer among the cheapest like they used to be.

They divest their investment, what does it have anything to do with them buying bandwidth from DNB?

Even when they have completed their 5G rollout, they still need DNB to maximize their 5G coverage. Other telcos also will be buying bandwidth from UM.

Just one thing though. Both DNB and UM buying bandwidth from HSBB. I wonder how that will affect the whole fibre network speed.
*
Don't think they'll have equal access anymore after they exit the DNB consortium. Wholesale price will differ for non participating member.

Not entirely.

YES recently won the tender to build a new fibre network stretch across the railway tracks around Malaysia.

There's Maxis NGBB, Celcom's Timur fibre network in Sabah and Time Fibre network now expanding rapidly across major cities.

DNB1 already good strong start and foothold. All they need now is increase coverage on preciously reported blindspots while UM needs to build from scratch alone to match DNB1 else it'll lose its competitive edge.

Other telcos will be hesitant to buy bandwidth from a monopoly player which is repeating the exact same mistake that TM made with its HSBB move where it becomes a retail service player among the wholesale network it monopolizes.

You have full right to request unlock from your telco once your 24mths contract term is over. The device is your property after this and it's illegal for the telco to keep it locked only for their own network.

If you've settled all remaining months and paid the termination fee, the binding contract is already considered completed.

The modem should already be your property because you've paid it in full.

What is the process for requesting full access?
*
Keep your application letter and final settled bill payment for proof. You can either bring the modem back to the retail store and ask for modem unlocking service to be done on your modem or you can contact their customer service to ask for modem unlocking service steps with the proof that your contract is over. Don't directly contact the manufacturer or equipment supplier they won't entertain you directly except for their client telco companies, only the telco is allowed to deal with them.

Your telco cannot deny you to unlock because the modem is already your property.
