actually this is a misconception.
now CF/SD/uSD comes with a build in controller and opt for SIP packaging. everything under the substrate connected with wirebond.
so if internal conntoller kaput.. u also lose path to NAND.

instead of relying on card readers host controller. internal controller provides better/accurate data processing speed and data integrity as it is designed and tested to individual manufacturer's spec. Some also support additional data security feature and encryption.
