My Logitech G15 keyboard's enter key died yesterday. Since I had to open it up for repair, I decided to mod it too. Mine is a 1st gen G15. The 1st gen G15's came with a lousy quality silver paint on the top part. Most of them start to rub off at the palm areas just below the bottom left Windows key. It leaves an ugly grey patch there. U'll c the ugly grey patch in a later pic once I start to dissamble the kb.

Anyway, let's get on with the mod. Started by flipping the kb onto the back so I can remove all the big black screws.

user posted image

Then I popped the top piece off.

user posted image

Removed all the wires n popped off the main keyboard.

user posted image

Flip it around n u'll c a clear acrylic piece that diffuses the light from the blue LEDs that gives the keys a nice even glow. Remove the 13 chrome screws on that piece and the kb contact n silicone piece comes off.

user posted image

After removing the chrome screws u can remove the contact n silicone pad. I also removed all the keys at the same time. There's an amazing amount of dust that gets caught in there i tell u. sweat.gif

This is the silver piece with the lousy paint. Look at the silver paint in the red circle. It's completely rubbed off to the grey base. vmad.gif I've been wanting to remove everything so I can repaint the silver piece. Luckily I haven't had the time to do so. Or else I would haf had to do everything all over again after the Enter key died. After removing all the parts I took all the non electrical parts into the bathroom and gave them a good bath. My G15 was came out from the spa all refreshed after that. laugh.gif

After a proper cleaning n sum surface preparation on the silver piece, I painted it in pearl white color.

user posted image

It's very hard to get pearl white to show in pictures so I did a macro shot for u guys to really see the pearl white paint. Normal distance pics make it look like normal gloss white. For those who r curious about the painting process to achieve this. It's 4 layers of gloss white to make sure the base coat is a nice even white. Then 2 layers of pearl white n finally 2 layers of clear coat on top to protect the pearl paint. The painting is really tedious. 8 coats of paint with 30 minutes drying time between coats. That's 4 hours just on drying time! After that I left it to dry properly overnight b4 reassembly.

user posted image

I started the reassembly this morning by popping all the keys back in.

user posted image

Almost there, all keys reassembled.

This step is very important for u fellas planning to try this on ur own. Make sure u reassemble the keys properly. The long buttons like Space n Shift for eg. haf a metal bar thingy there to ensure a nice even keystroke. U hafta make sure u assemble it back properly like the pic below or the keys will lose the nice even keystroke.

user posted image

After that I put the contact pads back on.

All done. rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

user posted image

Last step is to plug it into the PC n pray....................................

I'm very happy to report that I've managed to bring the Enter key back to life. thumbup.gif Fortunately it was a dirty contact. I cleaned it with alcohol n it works perfectly now. Everything else like the all important LCD works perfectly too. That was the thing I was most worried about as a lot of mods on the G15 have dead LCDs due to careless handling. I handled mine with kid gloves to make sure everything works after reassembly. I'm so happy now. After a year of heavy usage, the G15 was looking really beat up n dirty. It now looks spanking new with a new coat a pearl white paint to boot. Now all u fellas with expired warranties................. GOGOGO. What r u waiting for? brows.gif

Ya it takes 1 whole day plus 1 day drying time after final coat of paint. So it's actually a 2 day process.

This is the most useful thing about the G15. All the other features I never use. I oni use this feature to monitor my system to make sure everything is ok.

It's using a combination of LCD Studio, Speedfan n Rivatuner to achieve that custom made screen.

Here's another mod I did yesterday after I finished with my MX510 mod. I call it the G15 Stealth Bomber. brows.gif
I wont go into too much detail as it has been covered at the beginning of this thread.

Here's the new G15 after I dismantled everything for cleaning.

user posted image

After I painted it. Notice how it doesn't shine even in the extremely bright lighting conditions?

user posted image

Here's y it doesn't shine. I painted it a special way. I call it Stealth Black. brows.gif It's a textured kinda flat black. I discovered it's very, very hard to take pics of it as I had to take about 20 shots b4 I cud pick out these few pics where u can c the texture. Even with my camera's macro mode turned on it was really hard to capture it. The paint is so dark n non reflective, it's extremely difficult for the camera to focus on the surface.

That's it for now. I will reassemble the G15 later n update again.

EXTREME BEAUTY there mADmAN...

And now, thats a keyboard. At first, i feel that the Lycossa is more beautiful than the G15. With this mod, the G15 is 100% nicer than the Razer...

If only uncle is going to mod the new G15 and see whether its as beautiful or not...
*
Problem is, I much prefer this old G15 to the new 1. If I liked the new G15 I wud haf bought it n modded it the minute it arrived in LYP. I love the rotary volume control, bigger LCD and blue LEDs on the old 1.

QUOTE(sHin0bi @ Jan 20 2008, 09:24 PM)
can it be done in yellow?!

Of course, it's just a matter of choosing a color u fancy. Even pink color oso can. Now, that I really wanna see. Who's gonna be 1st in LYN with a pink G15 Tinkerbell? laugh.gif

The special thing about the black on the Stealth Bomber G15 is the texture, not the color. brows.gif
