two different situation, i think. In Cantona's case, he was provoked while he was walking away after a red card, he reacted badly. In Mason's case, its an unprovoked violence against a woman. Violence against women is a big no-no especially in the UK with many organizations to pressure for heavier punishment. If United had reinstated Mason, it would have made the club look bad from all fronts.
