Never tried it myself. But all you need to is install software like TrueNAS.

Can consider throwing in an SSD and installing a lightweight Linux OS such as https://www.bunsenlabs.org/

Or, something more user friendly like ChomeOS Flex https://support.google.com/chromeosflex/answer/11552529
However, a lot of the old Intel Atom Era processors are no longer supported by chromeos flex

Well, it would run faster and can use for lightweight tasks like checking emails and writing documents

Though YouqTube probably won't play well on that

use it as home server. use debian as your os. install samba for file sharing, plex or jellyfin for media server and qbittorrent. dont need ssd as long as the hdd is still healthy and tailscale to access your device outside home network

but laptops power consumption high right?

things that you are going to leave on 24/7 ideally prefer to be a low powered device

I would hook it up to a larger external LCD screen as an entertainment unit (stream movies, play old pc games)

Wonder how it fares to connect it to 4k TV via HDMI cable, don't think can support up to 4k

Eventually, my HP 311 finally died due to old age. The bloody thing has been running 24x7 as a print server. Just last month, I found the netbook not responding to pings.

So I went over to the store room to check and found it dead as a door stop. Not responding to charger or battery. I salvaged the 32GB SSD and turned it into a flash drive with an MSATA to USB3 enclosure.

In its place is another old laptop, the ThinkPad T60 running as a print and document scanner server. Since it was a waste using such a powerful laptop for such a menial task, I installed DOSBox and other old DOS games on it. Whenever I need to play some old games, I merely need to select the KVM to give me control over it.

that's why, and i find it waste to get a new laptop purely for this too. *sigh*
