Saw the Motul 7100 thread asking where to buy.
I had also some questions on lube.
Starting a new thread hope to consolidate all lube discussions into one thread.

Let me start my questions: Scooter Lube aka. JASO MB spec.

As far as I read, have not ask ChatGPT yet.. 🤪

Normal bike, lube need to lubricate both engine and wet clutch.
Scooter have dry clutch, lube only need to lube the engine. Final gear has different lube. Just like car.

Some lube company clearly mention the above, and says it's ok to use car lube in scooter with dry clutch as long as viscosity matches.

Bike manual for obvious reasons will NOT mention car lube is ok for scooter, and of course, promotionally, must use bike's brand of lube.

So the question:
If you are using a scooter, do you dare to use car lube in scooter if viscosity matches?

Me, I will do it.

Do whatever that gives you a peace of mind. As long as engine break you don't blame yourself or the oil can liao.

This lube thing is very interesting topic.

Aside fake lubes everywhere, where no one can really pin point fake or genuine other than buy at petrol kiosk for peach of mind. So put aside fake or genuine.

Everyone I spoke to goes by "gut feel" and over worrying the snake oil they use. Even oil change recommendation from extreme of every 400km been recommended, yet, lot of follower.. like religion 🤣

I will not recommend it although we think is similar, the reality is different. Car engine oil is more viscous and can withstand higher temperatures, while scooter engine oil is more fluid and can lubricate the smaller parts of the engine.

But is up to you. The risk is always there.

Errr.... If want to lubricate smaller parts and want it more friction reduction (which is not friendly to gearbox), you need to go lower viscosity and higher friction modifier (aka. energy saving blah blah blah..)... which means... car lube. 0-30SAE.

Normal bike lube JASO MA means no friction modifier 'cos it has to lubricate gearbox.

How do you dispose the lube if you change the lube yourself?

Check with your nearby bengkel, car or moto also can.
Normally, most of them accept used oil.

This is the proper way

Fundamentally there will be some difference between engine oil for cars and motorcycle. End of the day it's your call what you wish to put into your vehicle's engine. Personally, I would not do it. Good luck!

That's the thing.. everyone says "fundamentally there will be some difference"

but no one says exactly what's the diff. biggrin.gif

Like I mentioned before, some lube company actually publishes you can use normal car lube in place for JASO MB requirement.

Is can, some bike oil have API and JASO spec. Should be ok to use car EO with just API. Manual also specify which API grade to use.

From my opinion car engine is bigger comparing to scooter which is the temperature is small engine are way higher that is why market have car & bike lube.

Anyhow the risk is always there.
