KUALA LUMPUR (April 25): Malaysia had the quickest tourism recovery among its regional peers last year, recovering 92% of tourist arrivals compared to 2019 levels, driven by visitors from Singapore, according to a report by Standard Chartered Global Research. Excluding Malaysia, tourist arrivals to Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam have recovered to an average of about 60% of 2019 levels, following a broad resumption of international travel in 2022, said Standard Chartered in the report, which was co-authored by Asean and South Asia chief economist Edward Lee and Asia economist Jonathan Koh. Nonetheless, they noted that the return of China and Hong Kong tourists was slower at about 18.4% of pre-pandemic levels due to the world's second-largest economy's border control policies. sos |

QUOTE(tik @ Apr 26 2023, 10:03 AM) KUALA LUMPUR (April 25): Malaysia had the quickest tourism recovery among its regional peers last year, recovering 92% of tourist arrivals compared to 2019 levels, driven by visitors from Singapore, according to a report by Standard Chartered Global Research. Tourists from China to Malaysia once numbered 3.1 million in 2019, but fell to 405,149 in 2020, and only 7,701 in 2021, Excluding Malaysia, tourist arrivals to Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam have recovered to an average of about 60% of 2019 levels, following a broad resumption of international travel in 2022, said Standard Chartered in the report, which was co-authored by Asean and South Asia chief economist Edward Lee and Asia economist Jonathan Koh. Nonetheless, they noted that the return of China and Hong Kong tourists was slower at about 18.4% of pre-pandemic levels due to the world's second-largest economy's border control policies. sos So rough calculation 3.1mil / 12 months / 18.4% = 47533 China tourist / month or 1584 china tourist /day are arriving ... Believable figures, i think |

I dont think they will back soon, if you have follow their local news, china people were facing a huge economic problem now, many factory closing down and big firm moving away from their country due to trade war getting more worse, if you don't have money to survive, still got mood to travel meh. Recently some of them come for education/working purpose, not coming for fun, how i know because i involve this industry.

I guess answer is sort of both. I've stayed in MO for a week two weeks ago, can definitely see a lot of China tourist groups in suria KLCC and a handful of them in MO itself, but don't think it's near the volume prior to MCO tho.
